A question on enableing and disableing java

I'm curious to know why is it that when I have java enabled on my computer, the area where I post messages is really big and is longer than my computer screen? When I type, I wind up haveing to move the screen over just to see what I've written. I'd prefer to have java enabled, but don't for this reason. Is there a way around this without haveing to disable the java on my computer everytime I want to post messages? Thanks oh Tech Gods and Goddesses.
