I have never been a fan of seafood. There's something about it that just gives me the heebie jeebies. That said, I've always been able to eat fried shrimp and fish sticks (mmmm...I love me some batter! LOL), but I also load them with either tartar or cocktail sauce to cut the fishy flavor.

Now DH2B and I are trying to lose weight (I guess it's all that fried food! :teeth: ) and get healthy, and I'd like to be able to have a little bit of variety in our meals other than just boneless, skinless chicken breasts every night (which is the only kind of chicken I'll eat. Who's calling me picky? ). DH2B will eat anything, so I don't have to worry about him, but I'm a little apprehensive about trying to make fish at home. I've never cooked it and wouldn't even know where to begin on how to prepare it. Can anyone offer any pointers and suggest a good fish that isn't too fishy tasting (There's an oxymoron for you! :3dglasses ) or too complicated?

TIA! :earsgirl:

Orange Roughy - you can buy it frozen at Sam's Club. I bake/broil it with spices - NO fishy taste!

Tilapia is really good. You can use any white fish like this. Flounder is good too, or Rockfish (striped bass).

I spray it with a bit of the spray butter and add a little lemon pepper seasoning and bake at 350º for about 20 minutes.

Another low cal seafood is steamed shrimp. Just steam according to the directions on the back of Old Bay Seasoning. It is delicious.

Orange Roughy is a good choice. Grilled fish is very good and adds a flavor of its own with the chargrill taste. Grouper when fresh can be very good and non fishy.

I second Tilapia...I used to eat orange ruffy until I tasted tilapia. I know that Costco has some frozen. What about shellfish? Crab and shrimp are really good. Good luck.

Ok, now this is where my crazy comes out. LOL I have this thing with creepy crawly things, and this includes shrimp, crab & lobster. I can only eat shrimp when it's breaded and the tails have been removed. Otherwise, I can't eat it (this is where the heebie jeebies start to attack).

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! We're going to Costco in the next few days and I'll look for the Tilapia & Orange Roughy in the frozen section!

I can't eat any shellfish because I can't stand that fishy taste. However, I do love salmon, swordfish, Alaskan halibut, and similar types of fish. I usually bake/broil it in the oven or toss it on the grill. I'm not sure where you live, but if you're out west, you may want to give Alaskan halibut a try. Its just plain awesome. The Atlantic halibut, however, is not. Yuck.

I've never had any type of shellfhish because my mom is so allergic we can't have it in the house (and it's suspected that I may be somewhat allergic too  ) so I can't offer any shellfish suggestions (and all that stuff creeps me out too). We do however eat swordfish and that's not fishy at all. We grill it. We usually coat it in some sort of spice or something like that and than grill it. By grilling it it has a unique flavor, it's healthier, and you dont have the cooked fish smell in the house. Swordfish truly tastes like chicken with just a slightly different texture, and you can do a lot with it. Cod is also alright, but a bit stronger. I think my stepdad usually bakes that in lemon and butter, but as he's not talking to me right now I can't ask him for sure  I would avoid salmon. It's a less fishy fish, but it's definitely fishy and has a weird taste too.

Mahi mahi is a good choice. DH also doesnt like strong fishy taste and he loves mahi mahi, salmon and talapia.

I usually pan sear with alittle butter, salt & pepper and capers. We also like to grill it.

I've got some Ahi tuna that I'll have tonight with some teriyaki marinade..I love Tuna, Swordfish etc ,on the grill with a good marinade...I also make fish kabobs and fish tacos..Love fish tacos

Tilapia, Cod, and mahi mahi are all good choices.

I put a 1/4 cup of olive oil in a baking dish, 1/2 cup of white wine. I lightly bread 1lb of cod and add it to the dish. Put liberal amounts of lemon juice and garlic, some shredded FF mozarella, a can of diced tomatoes and cook for 40min at 375.

Lots of good "non-fishy" tasting suggestions.

Another is Blue Hake. I make it the way my girlfriend taught me:

Saute in olive oil with Montreal Steak Seasoning on it. Yummy!

Of course you can bake it or grill it too.

My FIL and DH have never been ones for fish, but they love grilled salmon. I just brush it lightly with olive oil, salt and pepper, and DH grills it. First skin side down. Get the salmon filets, they are boneless. My DD's 4 adn 5 even like it.

Denae

P.S. 1/2 lb per person is more than enough

I second (or third, or whatever) Orange roughy and tilapia. Also good, if you can get it, is snapper and grouper. All white, flakey, sweeter tasting fish.

Salmon is very good for you, but I find it too oily, not matter how it is prepared.

The ultimate for me would be tuna. Get sushi grade Ahi, lightly oil both sides, dredge it in sesame seeds and sear on a HOT grill for 2 minutes on each side.

If I have to eat cooked tuna, this is the way I like it. Otherwise, just give it to me sashimi style.

Go to

www.epicurious.com

for hundred and hundreds of way to cook all kind of fish.

and if you go to
http://www.taunton.com/finecooking/index.asp

again lots of ways to cookit and some on lone classes on technique.

You can cook different type of fish in a 375 degree oven wrapped ina foil pocket with seasonning , and vegetable diced finely. This is very easy. Most of the time 10 minutes will be enough.

I use alot of haddock .....I put some stove top stuffing not cooked of course just mixed with water and butter and put that in the underside of ithe fish in a casserole dish.....I put some lemon on top of the that and some ground pepper...dash of garlic powder......this is very tastey and we love it.....when the fish flakes it is done.....I do this for about 15 minutes in the oven ......I also do a lemon and butter mixture in the microwave until the butter melts and dip the haddock in that or pour some on top of the fish....

Orange Roughy should be your first choice. Very tender, not fishy at all.
Prepare by broiling or grilling (get a fish basket for that for because fish easily falls apart) for about 10 minutes, never overcook fish. You can add a little lemon/butter/spices/herbs to jazz it up to your taste.

Ways to combat "fishy" on the fish is too add some lemon prior to cooking, it helps. Also burn a lemongrass candle to combat fishy smell in the air.

We love fish here...In fact I fried up some catfish for dinner last night (lake fish is very "fishy" as opposed to ocean fish) and had made some shrimp canapes for lunch today.

OOPS! Almost forgot to say....thaw fish completely BEFORE cooking, day before is best. Very important for fish to cook right.

Good Luck!
