Yesterday my sister was diagnosed with arithmia (sp?) and placed on beta-blockers. I have several questions I'd like answered if you could. What causes this condition, How do beta blocker help? and what are we looking at down the road? She's only 47.

Arrhythmia is an abnormality in the heart rhythm.

Arrhythmias are like ice cream. They come in different "flavors" By flavors I mean different types. Most arrhythmias in an otherwise healthy 47 year old women are benign and at worst a nuisance. However some can affect the quality of her life because of there unpredictability.

When structural heart disease such as enlargement of the heart or a heart attack is present, then some arrhythmias could be life threatening. This is what was going on with Vice President Cheney.

For non serious problems medications such as beta blockers which block adrnealine's activity on the heart, calcium channel blockers or sodium channel blockers are used. For certain types of arrhythmias, a procedure called radio frequency catheter ablation may be performed in a hospital to destroy the focus of the arrhythmia and cure the person of the problem. This is not always available to every person with a heart rhythm problem.

For benign arrhythmias, there is no affect on longevity of life for the patient.

In the first stages of treatment for a benign arrhythmia, it can usuaully be handled by a good internist or cardiologist. For more serious arrythmias or if catheter ablation is required, then a cardiac electrophysiologist would be consulted on your sister's case.

Hope that helps.

Depending upon what the "flavor" is, the cause could be something she was born with, could be related to metabolic problems such as hyperthyriodism, structural heart problems such as leaky valves, a sensitivity to agents such as caffeine, or just bad luck (which means we are not smart enough to know why).

Hey, that's cool, you ask for a doctor in the house and you get a cardio specialist!!!! The DIS comes through again.

Just passing my best wishes on for your sister, Kathy. :sunny:

I'll defer to our esteemed electrophysiologist, THE LION KING:) :) . I'm simply a "horse" doctor:) . Wishing your sis the very best..........

Thanks so much, Dave. You certainly explained it to me better than she did. By the time she was done I didn't know what was going on. I feel better about the situation now that I understand it.

Again, many thanks,

Kathy

P.S. Thanks for your thoughts, Dan

Uh, yeah. Ditto what Lion King said :teeth: :teeth: . . .

Seriously, I would certainly defer to our resident cardiac eletrophysiologist. Believe me, he knows what he is talking about.

Here's wishing all the best to your sis . . .
