A Pointless Grammar Vent

This is a funny thread. I agree with all of them. One thing that my kids say, although I don't think I've seen it here, is "on accident" vs "by accident". As in, "Mom, I stepped on Mike's foot and he's crying but it was on accident." Grrrrr.

Also, do you stand "in line" or "on line"? I've always said "in line", but I know I've heard parents tell their kids to go get "on line" to hold a spot. Online means something entirely different to me, lol.

I hate, hate, hate supposably!

I also know several grown-ups who refer to that common childhood illness now rendered rare thru immunization as chicken pops. No lie.

See what I mean?! :teeth: Just kidding. That was a stupid moment, need to check my spelling.

I hate it when people use the word 'irregardless'. That is redundant - regardless is the correct word to use.:D

That one really bothers me too. I used to correct people when they used it, but I gave up.

It should be "regardless" or "irrespective".

My mother and grandparents drilled these things into me. My grandfather was head librarian for the city, my grandmother was a lawyer, and my mother did some freelance journalism!

I think all of you would enjoy a book called, "Eats, shoots, and leaves." It is all about this woman's punctuation pet peeves and it is incredibly funny. I have the book somewhere, if you need me to look up the author. The book was a best seller last year.

SISTER!!!!!!:p Seriously, I am so happy to find someone who understands this. I used to correct people ALL the time on this.....well, I lost a friend in college because of this. She got REALLY upset that I corrected her and she was an English major (I think a little alcohol might have been involved too! :p ) and thought she could "speak" no wrong.

Anyway, this is the first time I have mentioned this in a while.....I saw someone use it in a post and it just made me go NOOOOOO!:p

It really bugs me when people use "would of" "could of" "should of" instead of "would have", "could have", "should have".

I just got a work email that used the phrase "could of" about 6 times.

Just a pet peeve.

Maybe I would of cared, maybe I should of cared, maybe I could of cared, but I just don't care.;)

Olena - I know what you mean about the opinions. There is one certain Supreme Court Justice that makes me nuts!

My DH has a large problem with proper spelling. At first this bothered me, but I learned to overlook it. The one and only word that I can't stand spelled incorrectly is "wait." He spells it "wate," no matter how many times I teach him the proper way!

How about "those ones". I've drilled my kids so much they even correct their friends!

I agree with all of these, although I do say "these ones" without thinking about it, I thnk it's a regional dialect thing. I have a friend who always says "the thing is is that..." I hate that double verb. As for people not using the correct subject/verb agreemnet I've actually not used products because of those problems in advertising!!

BTW, a comma splice is when you link atwo complete sentences with a comma. The comma's not strong enough there, you either need a semicolon or a period.

eta needed to fix spelling, it's too early in the morning!

One of mine is "Less and Fewer". These are constantly reversed.

The improper use of effect and affect, capitol and capital ~

I also go crazy when someone ends or begins a sentence with: in fact or in here to (shouldn't this be inherent)?.

I also go crazy when someone ends or begins a sentence with: in fact or in here to (shouldn't this be inherent)?.

It is of course implied anyway, but "in fact" is a wonderful transitional phrase. I spent a few weeks stressing the use of transition words and phrases in my 8th grade writing class. Without them, the kids' writing can be so short and choppy. ;)

I have several friends that teach English. I purposely will send them emails and end my sentences with a preposition, just to see if they'll correct me.:teeth:

Here's an interesting article on grammar that you might like.:teeth:

Okay, here's another one that bugs me:

"Suppose to" instead of supposed to.

Supposed = should or intended
Suppose = assume, consider or imply
