It really bugs me when people use "would of" "could of" "should of" instead of "would have", "could have", "should have".

I just got a work email that used the phrase "could of" about 6 times.

Just a pet peeve.

I HATE DOUBLE NEGATIVES. Even Bye Bye Bye by Nsync, when they say "It ain't no lie..." that bugs me, ain't isn't a word and "No no" means yes!!! AHHHHHHHH!

So then what does No No No mean?

No no no means no, the first two no's cancel each other out, leaving one no.

Basically if there are an odd number of negatives in a sentence it means negative, if there is an even number of negatives, it's positive.

Get it???

English teacher here. I know what you mean! ;)

Even worse than 'could of,' for me, is 'I wish I would of/have done that,' or 'If only he would have done this,' when it's 'I wish I HAD,' and 'If only he HAD done this....'

Please don't read my posts then (or is it than) because my mom is a teacher and I stopped e-mailing her. She corrected me to often! LOL

I am right there with you! I've really tried to just not let it bother me, but sometimes it's so hard. I also cannot stand when people use a double negative. My biggest pet peeve, however, is when people use 'for' in place of 'so'. Such as: I needed to save money for I could go on my Disney trip. Grrrr.....okay, vent over.

It's too often. Just kidding.

I hate when people use of instead of have too! Drives me crazy.

Okay, I'll vent too. I can't stand when people use "myself" in a situation such as:

Q: "Who went to the movies?"
A: "Bob, Mary and myself."

It's "ME" people! That drives me insane!!!

Hee hee- you're not alone...I get bugged by that as well!

Also, I hate it when people say, "I could care less." It is supposed to be, "I couldn't care less". Otherwise, if you COULD care less, then you actually DO care about it. Seems obvious to me, but so many people use it incorrectly, and it bugs me!

I'm afraid to write too much more for fear of writing something grammatically incorrect, so TTFN!

Can you stand another vent? Not directed at anyone in particular, but I become irrationally upset when apostrophes are used to pluralize.

Disclaimer: I realize this is a personal problem and I really should get over it. It's just so hard.

Ummm, really hate to burst your bubble here, but actually it is "I" Think of it this way--would the correct sentence be: "I went to the movies." Or, "Me went to the movies"

:wave2:

Actually isn't it 'I'. You'd say 'I went to the movies' not 'Me went to the movies'. Adding other people doesn't change it. One of my pet peeves. OOH - someone just beat me to this one.

I'm also bothered by apostrophes are used to pluralize. It's NOT menu's, ride's.......

I agree with all of the above & could add quite a few more. (Yes, I'm picky! ;) )

What bothers me the most about it is that we knew the correct way to write all of those things by 5th grade! (Well, except the preposition...everyone in my area does that & we didn't have a teacher from outside to tell us until 10th. ) They don't seem to teach it any more. :(

DD argued with me about "would of/could of/should of" in 6th grade. It seems her teacher used it as well...at least according to her. It's amazing what we hear: would've becomes would of. (Of course would've isn't right either, but we all say it. ;)

And yes, I know my sentence structure isn't correct, but it's easier to write this way on the Internet. :teeth:

Okay Mary Ellen and Disneymom3, you're right. It was a bad example, but I think you got my point. So many people use "myself" incorrectly!
