A Poem Worth Reading

Mr.,Mrs.TCD, I send my condolences, I am so sorry to hear about your father/inlaw. It is always heart breaking to loose a loved one. Even for those of us who didn't know him, it is heart felt when we hear of a fallen hero who gave his best for all of us.

TCD , take every chance you can to learn from our elders, they hold the history that we can't learn in school.

Beautiful poem!

TCD...so sorry for your family's loss. Your family will be in my prayers tonight.

TCD - I am sorry to hear of your families loss, and will continue to ask questions of my FIL who served our country in Libya during the Korean War. So far, I recall him telling of a night on duty when they spent the time in foxholes at the perimeter of the base on high alert for some reason. They were each given one bullet. Talk about sacrifice. I had a hard time understanding the logic, but I guess the reason is that someone who knows they only have one bullet is going to be sure of what they fire at before using it. Probably prevented un-necessary panic shooting and possible friendly fire issues if someone panicked.

Deb, thanks for posting that poem.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Deb, sorry to hijack your thread.

I just re-read the poem. Thanks again for posting it!

No problem, TCD. Glad to see so many pay tribute to a fine man. I don't think our generation could endure what the men and women of the WWII generation had to endure. Don't forget - most of them went through the depression before going off to war.

I think one of the greatest assignments I had in college was to interview someone((s) who went to school in a one room schoolhouse. I chose my grandparents, for whom I got approval to interview and tape the conversation on the phone for the assignment since I went to school out of the state they lived in. I still have that cassette tape. (yes, I date myself here) I learned more about the two of them and even of my grandfather's military service in North Africa during WWII than I ever would have imagined just in that interview. I feel that I am so fortunate to have that for my son to hear later in his life when he is mature enough to appreciate it. The history was so vivid, it was like I was sitting there in Ohio with them and they were high school sweethearts again. Both of them have passed, most recently my grandmother last month. I will be converting that tape over to a digital format this summer to preserve. Thanks Deb for reminding me to go and get my little piece of history and save it. Those stories mean the world to me.
