A Pink Pixie Princess - Complete!

Oh Dopey training burn out is inevitable! I was THERE last year - just keep reminding yourself you are so close to tapering, remember how the training for your last Dopey helped make the race weekend such a great experience, and just get it done.
The princess medals are amazing! They have come so far from when I did it in 2012 - I need to get back down for princess weekend sometime! The Star Wars races are more of my thing right now though!
I have the Run or Tie Dye tank - love it with Bee skirt but it pretty much goes with everything with all of those colors!
Just keep running, just keep running - you've got this!

I struggle with burn out near the end of training too. But I can definitely see it with the high mileage you need to get ready for Dopey and the crummy weather. Part of me wants to tell you to maybe take a day or 2 off or easy, but then again, when I was on the verge of major burn out - I pushed myself to complete the runs and I'm glad I did. I think going from one race to another to another to ... 48.6 miles is a lot, so no wonder you have mental fatigue!
Yeah, at this point...I am just DONE.
Here's a picture of my little one. I got her from the shelter too - poor thing was returned 3 times before I became her forever home:

And here's some pictures of my big guy as a puppy:

So cute!! I wish we'd gotten a second dog at the same time we got Archie...I think that would have made things easier for him. I love how your pups snuggle together!!
Well, ya know a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! But yeah- it would be a permanent decision....and definitely slowly with sharp scissors! :lmao:

@dis_or_dat What precious fur babies you have!
Yeah, resale value will likely tank, so that's something to keep in mind. But I did not enjoy wearing them with the bras!
Oh Dopey training burn out is inevitable! I was THERE last year - just keep reminding yourself you are so close to tapering, remember how the training for your last Dopey helped make the race weekend such a great experience, and just get it done.
I just couldn't do it. :(
The princess medals are amazing! They have come so far from when I did it in 2012 - I need to get back down for princess weekend sometime! The Star Wars races are more of my thing right now though!
I know! I like them so much better than the tiara/heart medals!
I have the Run or Tie Dye tank - love it with Bee skirt but it pretty much goes with everything with all of those colors!
Just keep running, just keep running - you've got this!
Thanks!

Dopey Challenge Training
Week 15 (12/12) - 20 miles completed/37.5 miles planned

MO: yoga
TU: 2.5 miles
WE: 5 miles
TH: 10 miles
FR: 20 miles planned, 2.5 miles completed
SA: rest
SU: rest

You guys, I am just DONE. :faint: I am so over this training.

Tuesday’s run was really good - short, but good. Good start to the week after cutting my long run short the previous weekend. Same thing with Wednesday's run - again, good.

Thursday and Friday were different stories. We had a winter weather advisory or something on Thursday and it was way too cold/snowy to go outside. So I actually did 10 miles on our treadmill! I set my watch up for run 3/walk 1 intervals and watched Tangled and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I really had to convince myself to keep going for the last few miles.

Friday was a different story. Sidewalks were icy and it was still cold out (real feel temperature of 1 degree!) so I was facing 20 miles on the treadmill. :( I had a good movie plan (all 3 Toy Story movies) , and set my watch to 2/1 intervals...but I just wasn't into it. It didn't help that corrals came out for marathon weekend RIGHT before I was going to start my run, and my corral wasn't as high as I'd hoped - Corral I, same as Dopey in 2015. I made it 2.5 miles and was just DONE.

Thinking more about corrals, I'm really not sure what I expected. The time I submitted for this weekend was significantly slower than what I turned in for 2015, so really, I'm lucky that I stayed where I did. I'm not sure why I was so thrown by that initially, but it messed with my head in a big way right before the run.

I just do not think I am cut out for marathon training anymore, and I don't think this is just burnout talking. I'm not enjoying the long runs and I'm sick of the occasional back spasms I get during runs and the back pain popping up during the last 4-5 miles like it has for pretty much every long run. I feel a little bad about cutting the 20-miler short, but if I'm being completely honest - most of me just does not care. I just want Dopey to happen and be done - I definitely crapped out at the end of training here, but I have 15-, 16- and 18-milers under my belt, plus the knowledge that I have done it before (in fact, I maxed out at 18 for my first marathon and didn't get to do the 20-miler), so I think I'll be okay. And then I'll very likely max out at half marathons from here on. Either way, I guess it's officially taper time...this isn't the triumphant peak week update I was hoping to give, but it is what it is. :confused3

Anyway - the reason why I did those runs yesterday and today is because I'll be out of town starting tomorrow with limited internet access. OH MAN IT IS BADLY NEEDED. So have a good week, all, and happy taper!

Yes on the burnout. We did our 10 today and plan for 20 tomorrow and I soooo do not want to do it. If not for Dooey 2018, I'd also be saying no to marathons and I may anyway even with Dopey 2018. Halfs are just so much more pleasant and fun - both in the training and the racing.

Anyway, enjoy your time off and your taper!!

Awe man @Ariel484, the struggle is real. And I've not trained for a full but knowing the mental games I've played with myself training for halfs, well while I can't truly understand, I can imagine.
Heck, I'm thinking I really love the 10K distance more than the half! I did the GSC in 2016 and loved the 10K-it was fun and I just loved the route!
Anyway, I'm sure both you and ZellyB are going to do great!

As I have never trained for a marathon, I haven't experienced what you have, but I have had plenty of half marathon training cycles where I just want the whole thing to be over, so I can only imagine how I would feel that in a bigger way for a marathon. I hope you have a fun getaway. And I love that you mentioned Crazy Ex-Girlfiend. One of my very favorite shows. I have a major crush on Santino Fontana (I hope he comes back!!).

Don't beat yourself up over feeling DONE and burned out. It's common to feel that way, and if you've decided there are no more marathons in your future, that's okay too. Not everyone is a marathon runner or a Dopey runner, no matter how hard Disney sometimes tries to tell us otherwise while waiting in our corrals. Be comfortable doing what's best for you & what makes you want to keep doing it again, and don't let anyone tell you different. :)

I always figure shortening or cutting a run you aren't feeling is for the better in the long run. No need to force a run that could lead to more stress (&/or injury) in getting to & finishing Dopey. Marathon training is tough (especially with winter weather) & you've put in a lot of miles & have experience so just focus on enjoying it & take each race 1 mile at a time & you'll do great! My Dopey training got derailed last Nov getting injured for this year, & it was that base training in the summer/early fall that got me through, which is what you already have built up :)

As for corrals just focus on you & don't compare (maybe you don't anyway) to anyone else, but I know it's soooo easy to compare to everyone on here who are posting their corrals, just know you are honest to your abilities & own it! You are not defined by your corral letter :), It's just your start time I figure & nothing else.

Own your times, your races, your abilities & now enjoy the taper & the experience of Dopey! oh & Just think of us back home who are jealous of your Dopiness! Maybe the lucky skirt is just the ticket too for the marathon!

Hey Shannon! Sorry to hear you're struggling with your burn out what, you know what? I think that's totally normal and totally okay. I'm actually sitting on the couch typing this after deciding that 20 miles isn't happening for me this weekend. We're getting wet weather/snow all weekend so I understand that having to fight with less than ideal weather doesn't help. I bet you'll still get wrapped up in the excitement and enjoy (most of) your Dopey experience (because I don't know anyone who enjoys mile 20-25 of a marathon!)

Sorry it's not the triumphant finish you hoped for. :( But it sounds like you're OK with it, and that makes a lot of sense. I generally don't say this often, but in your case, I really do think everything will be fine. Like you said, you've done it before. You're a Dopey vet. You have many training runs behind you this cycle. You'll go at a pace that works for you. All good. So I definitely get why you're OK with it!

I'm not feeling particularly triumphant, either. Even though I ran my 20 this week, it was my least favorite long run ever. I'm used to the treadmill, breathing was fine and nothing hurt, but poor pre-run nutrition made it feel very low energy. I don't think that particular run will have much impact on my Marathon Weekend experience, other than to remind me to eat more before running. Also kind of blah because there will be no more running outside for me until Disney. I can barely walk my youngest son to and fro school without slipping on ice and snow (and the puppy doesn't help - she loves the snow and doesn't understand that it's really important that I not fall right now!) This all made me question future full marathons again and I, once again, made the "announcement" that this will be my last full marathon and I'm going back to half marathons only. I said that after the 2015 full and here I am getting ready for Dopey, so we'll see.

Hope you enjoy the weekend!!!

You guys, I am just DONE. :faint: I am so over this training.

Well then, it's a good thing it's taper time!
Honestly, it sucks that you feel this way ... but at least you don't have any super long runs before the race. So you have time to mentally recover.

Thursday and Friday were different stories. We had a winter weather advisory or something on Thursday and it was way too cold/snowy to go outside. So I actually did 10 miles on our treadmill! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I really had to convince myself to keep going for the last few miles.

I've discovered that the key to the treadmill is having the right entertainment. Watching something enjoyable makes that machine so much more bearable.
Back before I broke my treadmill, I used to watch American Ninja Warrior while on the treadmill. Watching people jump and run and whatever on those courses really motivated me to keep running. Also, Finding Nemo is a good treadmill movie.

As much as I understand why people want to know their corral early, I think it's kind of a bad thing sometimes. There's such an emphasis within the runDisney community on getting a good corral that if you don't end up in one of the first few corrals, it can be really disheartening, even if you're expecting it. And you really don't want something ridiculous like corrals to bum you out before the race. Is the course going to be more crowded (and the character lines longer) the later your corral? Yes. Does that definitely mean you're going to miss all the good characters and have a terrible race? No ... but it's hard to remember that when everyone is doing whatever they can to get the best possible corral placement.
Sorry, this probably sounds super angry, but I just really hate the runDisney community sometimes. A bad corral placement shouldn't be the end of the world, and we've all (myself included sometimes) kind of created an atmosphere where it is. It just sucks, because I think that you can have a great experience coming out of any corral (even the last one), and I wish we could all focus on that instead of focusing on getting a higher corral.

I just do not think I am cut out for marathon training anymore, and I don't think this is just burnout talking. I'm not enjoying the long runs and I'm sick of the occasional back spasms I get during runs and the back pain popping up during the last 4-5 miles like it has for pretty much every long run. I think you have to do whatever is right for you. I believe (and I think you believe too) that you can make it through Dopey. But if you're not enjoying the marathon or the training ... then it's okay to say that this is your last marathon. Whatever happens ... you have to do what's right for you. And don't let anyone (including me) pressure you into doing something you don't think is right.

Anyway - the reason why I did those runs yesterday and today is because I'll be out of town starting tomorrow with limited internet access. OH MAN IT IS BADLY NEEDED. So have a good week, all, and happy taper!

YAY!!! Enjoy your time away!

Enjoy your vacation! I get being burned out with Marathon training especially if your body isn't behaving as you want it to!

You've had so many kind words for me when I've had difficulty with my training this year that I couldn't imagine not lending some words of encouragement when things aren't going so well for you. I also have an incredibly tough time finding the energy/motivation/toughness, or whatever you want to call it, that it takes to get these long training runs done. I don't know that I've ever really found the answer for why I continue to do this, outside of the realization that I liked things less when I wasn't.

A few weeks ago running the 5 mile Turkey Trot in Cleveland I was having all kinds of problems after about a mile and a half. I was huffing and puffing to keep up anything approaching the pace that I wanted to, and used to be able to, achieve. I had all the thoughts going through my head: how will I finish Dopey if I can't go 5 miles?, why do I keep doing this?, I hate running!, no seriously, I really @$)$)&$) hate running!, I'm just not meant to be a runner, etc. I had basically formulated my manifesto for closing my journal page when I realized I was only half a mile from the finish... and all the thoughts disappeared.

I guess the point is that this is tough and I'm sure there are going to be moments of doubt and annoyance over the next few weeks; but you are going to finish Dopey and it is going to be awesome. How you decide to move forward from there is a question that I'm sure you'll find the right answer to in due time. Thanks for all of the encouragement you've sent my way this year!

Enjoy your time away! Hopefully somewhere WARM...I do not think I could survive up there, I get miserable and cranky when the temps go below 40!
You are totally going to get through Dopey, 20 miler or not! I have done a total of 4 marathons - for 3 of them my longest run was 18. The last 10K is going to just suck no matter what...although at least in WDW they give you 2 parks in the last 10K which helps!

Bummer about the 20 miler, but I completely understand! 20 miles on a treadmill would be nearly impossible for me to do and training through the winter in general is just miserable. If you decide to try a non-Disney marathon again, definitely stick to a fall race!

...mentally I have not been into these long runs once they got past the half marathon distance...
You guys, I am just DONE. :faint: I am so over this training.

I just do not think I am cut out for marathon training anymore, and I don't think this is just burnout talking. I'm not enjoying the long runs...

I feel a little bad about cutting the 20-miler short, but if I'm being completely honest - most of me just does not care.

And then I'll very likely max out at half marathons from here on.

@Ariel484, I have been there and understand completely. My last marathon was 12 years ago, and I had a very similar experience during my training back then as you are having now. I no longer really cared about training, wasn't fully keeping to the plan, was dreading certain runs... I was DONE. The bottom line: it wasn't fun any more.

I would not recommend this, but my solution (after finishing the marathon of course) was to drop running completely for several years. I definitely got more sleep and had more time to spend with my growing family, but I also got out-of-shape, gained about 25-30 lbs, was much less energetic, and most worrisome, became less mentally astute. In fact, it seemed like I was just mentally trudging through life.

So, after many years, I picked up running again, and it was painful at first. There were several starts and stops for a year or two, but when I would consistently run, I was in a much better place in life. I finally found my way back to regular training, but I just stayed with 5k and 10k races at first, and only a few races each year to keep me motivated. I have slowly made my way back to the half marathon distance and feel this to be a perfect distance for me... long enough to be an endurance event, but not too much training that it takes over my life. I still only register for a few races (mix of 5k, 10k, & half marathons) each year such that the schedule doesn't get overwhelming.

Needless to say, instead of completely cutting running from my life 12 years ago, I really wish I had just downsized my running to a point that created a good balance in my life.

Sounds like you are coming to the same conclusion that marathon training takes too much out of your life/schedule/motivation/body wear/etc, so I agree with your thoughts of focusing on shorter races in the near term. You may decide to tackle a marathon again sometime in the distant future, but it will be on your terms and not until you are once again excited for it. After 12 years, I am just now considering another marathon, but I'm not rushing it and still haven't fully decided.

Congrats on your peak week! I've said it before and I'll say it again...it's extra awesome you can get it done during this crummy weather.

I know you are a dog person, but I thought maybe you could use this...

I had a cat growing up (Oliver...Disney connection!) and love them. :) I especially love Grumpy Cat!

I'm still in the "no more marathons" mindset. I thought for sure I'd do 2018 for the 25th medal, but I don't see that happening. Maybe I'll be mentally recovered enough for the 30th anniversary in 2023 or whatever. :rotfl2:

You are totally right about halfs being more pleasant...I cannot WAIT to transition to Princess training!!
I could totally see myself sticking to the 10K distance. It's far enough that I feel I still get a good workout but I don't have to run for HOURS. And I am with you on the 10K courses at Disney being awesome. You need to try a Disneyland 10K someday, those are awesome! So much park time.
Honeslty, I don't remember it ever being this bad for me. This is marathon training cycle #4 for me and I don't remember hating it this much at the end of the others. :confused3 The back issues are making this one totally different, I guess...that and the fact that I am just SO SLOW. It's getting old.

YES to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend!! Mr. A and I are obsessed! I downloaded the Season 1 soundtrack. :lovestruc I need Santino to come back, like, yesterday. It was so funny because my husband and I were watching the show and I was just like... "Can you look up the guy that plays Greg on IMDB?" because his voice sounded familiar. As soon as he said "Santino" I knew who it was!! I love his "piano bar" song in Season 1 and his drinking song in Season 2. I really hope he comes back.
Why, whatever do you mean?! :upsidedow
Be comfortable doing what's best for you & what makes you want to keep doing it again, and don't let anyone tell you different. :)
Thanks. I think I need a good long break after this one, for sure. :confused3
Head up...focus on what it will feel like when you are crossing that finish line. Your can do this.
Thank you, I really appreciate the enouragement. :)
I always figure shortening or cutting a run you aren't feeling is for the better in the long run. No need to force a run that could lead to more stress (&/or injury) in getting to & finishing Dopey. I think I had unrealistic expectations with the corrals and just let it mess with me - mistake!! You are right that it's just a start time, though - and really, compared to the corral that I (for some reason?!) thought I was going to be in, I'm starting like 10 minutes later, which is really not a big deal.
Own your times, your races, your abilities & now enjoy the taper & the experience of Dopey! oh & Just think of us back home who are jealous of your Dopiness! Maybe the lucky skirt is just the ticket too for the marathon!
Thank you!! I think you are right about the lucky skirt...maybe I'll give people headaches/hurt their eyes with that outfit, but I need the luck! :rotfl2:
Hey Shannon! Sorry to hear you're struggling with your burn out what, you know what? I think that's totally normal and totally okay. Yeah, that weather is so tough. I hate that I couldn't "tough it out," but...well, it's really crappy! :confused3 If I weren't running at Disney I think I would be screwed, but running in my favorite place will definitely help me.

Sorry it's not the triumphant finish you hoped for. :( But it sounds like you're OK with it, and that makes a lot of sense. I generally don't say this often, but in your case, I really do think everything will be fine. Like you said, you've done it before. You're a Dopey vet. I wish it had gone better, and I wish I'd had something better to post here...it's a little embarrassing to admit that I didn't finish what I had planned, but it's real life.
I'm not feeling particularly triumphant, either. Even though I ran my 20 this week, it was my least favorite long run ever. I'm used to the treadmill, breathing was fine and nothing hurt, but poor pre-run nutrition made it feel very low energy. I'm sorry that your 20 didn't go well, but at least you have identified why and can learn from it! That is valuable.

We have had issues with ice here...not snow so much since we have gotten back home, but I was dodging ice patches a lot on Friday/Saturday, which was annoying. But I didn't fall so woohoo for that!

I definitely need a good long break from marathons...I seriously could see not doing another until the 30th anniversary at WDW! :rotfl2:
Hope you enjoy the weekend!!!
I did, thank you! :) It came at just the right time.
Well then, it's a good thing it's taper time!
Honestly, it sucks that you feel this way ... but at least you don't have any super long runs before the race. So you have time to mentally recover.
The mental break has been nice! Still a little burned-out but at least the weekend is almost here.
Ha, I could totally see how that would be motivating! I'll add Finding Nemo to my treadmill list...I may need it next weekend!
As much as I understand why people want to know their corral early, I think it's kind of a bad thing sometimes. There's such an emphasis within the runDisney community on getting a good corral that if you don't end up in one of the first few corrals, it can be really disheartening, even if you're expecting it. I totally think you are right...corralling has become a huge deal. And I think it is good that Disney has them, but it's definitely a *thing* now. People lie about corrals, jump them during race morning, etc. And freak out about them. It's annoying.

Honestly, part of what I loved about our recent trip was getting forced to take a break from reading about runDisney stuff. I didn't miss it at all.

YAY!!! Enjoy your time away!
I think I can make it through, I just hope that it's not painful! I mean, I know it will be because there's a marathon at the end, but I hope I'm not miserable.
Enjoy your vacation! I get being burned out with Marathon training especially if your body isn't behaving as you want it to!
Thank you!! We did enjoy our trip a lot. :)

I feel like my body hasn't been cooperating for over a year now and I'm wondering if I need to change things up. Something to think about after Tink in May, for sure.
