Please tell us more about, Nook & Kindle.....

Would love to hear more about them and which one people like better then the other. I am kind of drawn right now to, the Nook color. I like the idea of being able to get on the internet and download music. It will be used myself and my mother, my mom is into reading books and I thought this would help me get into reading more.

Also how does it work to download the books onto it and how much does it cost?

Thank you for any info. you can give us!

I have a Kindle and I love it. I think it depends on what you plan to use the device for. If you are mainly looking at reading, then I recommend the Kindle because it has e-ink and it really does look just like a book. You can read in sunlight and it doesn't hurt your eyes the way backlit screens can. While I can go on the internet on the Kindle, it is much slower than my laptop and I have an iphone, so I don't use it for that.

There are a couple of threads out there that will have great info for you. Try one of these:

I've been stalking the 2 above threads the last few days. I know I'm ready to jump on the e-reader band wagon. But I bought a car a lot quicker than it took me to pick out a new Blackberry.

What I did do today was go to Best Buy and look at the Kindle, Nook, and Kobo side by side. Now I'm leaning more towards the Kindle. Personally I just liked the way it handled better over the other 2. Now it's just deciding on 3G or wifi only. :rotfl:

The music I just download to my IPod touch. I can't see putting anything more than white noise type music onto an e-reader.

i've got a nook 3G+WiFi, and it also has e-ink technology. i LOVE it. i can borrow books from my local library (and others around the country), swap books with friends, and even in the case, it fits easily into my purse. i don't know that i'd use it for internet-i've read the browser is slow and clunky. i only use the 3G to download books.

Love my nook!

If you are planning on sharing it with your mother, I would ask her if she will be comfortable reading for a long period on a back-lit screen. Some people find it bothers them after awhile. If she doesn't have any issues, then the nook color is a nice option because it is more than just an e-reading device. If you just want something to read on, the Kindle is a great choice and it does play MP3s ( I haven't tried it yet so I can't comment on the ease of downloading and playing, or the quality of listening to them).

I have a non color Nook and I love it. I am an English teacher and I use it with my students and my own children as well.

It is wonderful and very easy to use. As for cost of books, I get mine for free. I have over 300 books on my Nook and I have paid for only one.

I get free ones from all types of genres.

I've had a Kindle for several years (2nd generation) that I love, love, love. I played with a Nook in-store a few times, and I just like the "feel" of the Kindle better plus it has a physical keyboard which is important to me.

Recently, my beloved Kindle started acting wonky (may or may not have been due to an unfortunate soy sauce incident which is all I'm saying about it :rolleyes1 ); after several over-the-phone troubleshooting attempts they kicked it up the line to the developers. They called me within a week to tell me there was nothing they could do. The warranty ran out over a year ago (at which point many companies would say "Oh, well - no warranty means it isn't our problem."), but Amazon charged me a minimal service fee and replaced it; I had to send mine back for a post-mortem, but they paid shipping both ways.

Bottom line for me: even if the Kindle, Nook, and Kobo were the exact same, I would choose the Kindle JUST for the great customer service I've always gotten from Amazon.

We choose the Nook because of the e-ink technology. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Nook!! I like the ease of downloading the books, and everyone knows B&N gift cards are a great gift for us!

I will say though that I have never talked to a Kindle owner who didn't LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Kindle too! I think you win either way!! For us, it came down to e-ink since my daughter and I are prone to headaches and migraines.

I have to say, I had an issue with my Nook -- one of the side pieces cracked. I called and had gotten out two sentences explaining the problem when the tech said, "Well that must be very inconvenient, we're going to replace that for you." They also paid shipping both ways. Great customer service. I have no experience with the Kobo, but it's in the company's best interest to keep the device in your hands -- the money comes from selling books!

The Kindle uses e-ink.

OP, they just announced a new e-ink nook (not color), it has a full touch screen and will be available in June.

Wow, thanks everyone for the great info.! I guess we are just going to have to go to Best Buy and play with them to help us decide too. It sounds like they are both great, so it will be hard to choose.
