A message for the guys..

Ok, let's call this one moot. There are still lots of other examples. If you were walking down the street with your wife and some random guy walked up to her and said lets see you naked would you tell her to just laugh it off and ignore it? My guess is that you'd put him on his back. Why is it any different here?

And there's the straw man, which is really the sign that we have reached the end of any logical discussion :)

No, the point is why is it ok when it's random faceless people on the Internet? Would it still be ok if it happened to you in real life? You say it's harmless but would it still be if you were confronted with it face to face. Totally relevant. You're avoiding it so that kinda answers it..

I haven't seen any one poster specifically calling another poster dumb..can you quote an example please?

Also, right or wrong, there is a difference between calling someone dumb and asking for naked pictures and suggesting (joking or not) that they go to a party naked. I can't be the only one who sees the difference?

Clearly there's a bit of difference, but honestly, I find the first more offensive than the last. Though if it were said in a ribbing type of humorous way, none would offend me.

But responding to a thread "this thread is pointless without pics" or similar words is very different than a guy walking up to you and your daughter and saying, out of the blue, "I want to see your daughter naked."

ETA: It's even different if you made them similar, ie you and your daughter asked Jim's wife, while Jim was standing right there, "Hey Jim's Wife, you're pretty big on top, where do you find your swimsuits? My daughter here is having a hard time find a good fit. She was spilling out of the ones she tried on" And then Jim piped in with "Pics, please." If I knew Jim well and if my daughter were over 18, I might smack his arm and call him an idiot or something, but if I didn't know Jim very well and/or my daughter were a minor and he popped out with that, yeah, I'd give him a dirty look and think he was a creep. But I don't think it's the same thing on the internet.

Because it's some random faceless people on the internet!

I think there are some people live a very real social existence on the internet. There are others for whom the internet remains a useful tool and fun entertainment device - but very separate from their "real life". I'd put myself in the latter group.

I didn't read the entire thread, but I'll say that I find most people on here passionate, for lack of a better word, about their opinion and their right to give it in any manner they see fit, so when people say things in jest or sarcastically, I just chalk it up to their style. I don't find the comments that have been referred to as offensive. It's an internet message board, and I guarantee you that if everyone on this thread was forced to sit in a room together face to face, then people wouldn't be nearly as outspoken on their opinions, lol. Plus, I think when you are on a message board like this, you really can't believe half of what is written! I know there are not that many perfect people out in the world!!!

I read and/or post on many comment sections around the web. I think the internet has brought out a lot of frightening people and I think this past year has brought out the worst of the worst. There are so many chauvinistic, rude, racist, hateful people out there now that it is downright scary. Having said that, I can absolutely see a difference between a joke or off the cuff comment meant as a joke and a person who is just being nasty. I don't find women to be a target on here and I haven't run across a particular poster who is purposely insulting to women. The Dis is tame compared to the rest of the net. And yes, I have a daughter.

I don't what I'd do.

But I know for a fact if it were the right time of the month, my wife would knock his lights out. :D

Sorry (seriously) ..... I just couldn't resist.

See, I find this hilarious and I'd be right there with your wife!

I agree with you that women aren't being targeted here. It just seems like the eye rolling comments are increasing and I don't see why it's ok.

This thread is certainly amusing. If anything, women control discussions on the DIS and in general men take a beating. I guess it would be useless to go back and pull up the old Johnny Depp threads where women express feelings clearly and repeatedly. And, of course, the divorce threads where pile-ons regularly occur.

I wouldn't be so sure about only women controlling the conversations. Not at all.

Actually someone else (a man) mentioned the PMS thing first. And of course he got blasted. Seemed like a legit reason to me so I elaborated on it. Who knew that normal body functions would cause such an uproar.

Yeah, I'm surprised at this as well. Periods DO cause hormonal imbalances in most females. Why shouldn't our attitude or mood be blamed at times on PMS? It's a fact. I'm at a loss as to why this is even considered offensive or sexist or demeaning...
