A Long Island forward...ah memories.

You can correctly pronounce places like Ronkonkoma,
Hauppauge, Wantagh,
Mineola, Islandia, Massapequa, and Copiague.
.
:lmao:

I lived in Quogue. I never met anyone who could say that who wasn't from Long Island!

And there was a street in Quogue called Quaquanantuck...try saying that!

Joy,

My dad was a hiker and as a result, we were members of the LI Greenbelt. We did a memorable trip to the Pine Barrens in Quogue. I got some great pictures.

Let's just say I'm very happy we have a Total Wine and More here in Tampa. I'm a huge fan of Pindar wines. Every friend and relative visiting from LI knows they have to bring me Spring Splendor or Summer Blush. Well, TW&M carries the red wines and I am so very happy. They even charge the same as I'd pay on LI.

That B52's concert on Saturday night was followed up by a visit to Carvel. My kids are getting a variation on my youth. Trips to Newbridge Pool or Jones Beach in the evening, followed by a trip to Carvel for a cone with crunchies.

I grew up going clamming and fishing on the sound. We would go out to Montauk Point and climb on the rocks while my father fished. You can't climb on the rocks anymore. The LIE didn't go out as far as it goes now, we used to take old Montauk highway, one lane in each direction.

Does anyone remember the flea market on 110? How about the drive in movie theater? We used to go see the Big Duck when it was still a poultry farm. How about the Commack arena?

Thanks java for the fun list! Ex-Bethpager here (home of Grumman)! I only moved out of state in January, so I still consider myself an honorary Lawng Eyeland'er!

I'm old enough to remember anything east of Huntington was mainly potato farms. I remember picnics at Sunken Meadow, when the Hicksville Gertz shopping mall wasn't enclosed, when we got the first Carvel, and those delicious Wetson's hamburgers! The Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway wasn't even built when I went to Kindergarten.... Memories!

I blogged last week about May 26,1977-when I saw Star Wars at the Mid Island Twin.

I remember the farmers market on 107, Nunleys, McGinleys, Jolly Rodger's, the Wetson's on Sunrise Highway (with Jahn's nearby), the Roosevelt Raceway (and flea market).

How many of you know that the term "hick" is thanks to the LIRR? Back in the days when the line terminated in Hicksville, anyone departing the train for points east was termed a 'hick'. That now refers to anyone who lives in the boonies-but it started on LI!

I'm orginally from Merrick. Moving to Long Beach soon.

Clamming no - but know plenty of people that have. Everything on that list is very very true.

I'm up for All American. Who's gonna make a run?

Long Beach. Ahh. I miss it so much. Do you realize I now live 3 hours from the beach? and I used to have a five minute walk from my house to the beach in Lido. :sad1:

I saw Return of the Jedi at the Meadowbrook Theater - is that still there? How about Zorm's (I think that's the name) - my father always insisted on chicken from there.

I'm not on LI, but when I was up there last (2 years ago), my IL's made the requisite Zorn's run.

It's a bummer that Raay Norr's is gone. That was the BEST! It had been modeled after a place in Atlanta. My dad took my sister and I to the Atlanta place in '84, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the joint.

Thanks for all the LI memories. I only have a few friends and relatives up there, and almost all of them are thinking of moving.

Funny! Never gone clamming but I relate to just about everything else.

What town are you in Java? I'm in Levittown.

So am I. :)

That was good. I was raised in Queens and lived here for 21 years.
Some of the things I don't relate to but others are a definete. :thumbsup2

Same here. Bummer! Although not as lucky as you. I had to get in the car and go to Jones (15 minutes). You could buy property in Long Beach for a song in the '70's. I still kick myself!!

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Bethpage! Definately can relate. Thanks for the memories. I feel lucky that I never missed that drunk train and had to wait until 5:30 for the next train!

Java--do you or any other natives remember Jolly Roger on the corner of Hicksville Road and Hempstead Turnpike? I have fund memories of the place--but I am hard pressed to find anyone that can verify its existence. I am begining to think I dreamed it!

It's been mentioned in this post by a couple of people.

What was Jolly Roger like and when was it there. I can remember a first grade field trip (1984 ish) and we went to some sort of amusement park place with a merry go round and other outdoor kiddie things. It wasn't Adventureland, btw.

Thanks! I will read back.

Jolly Roger closed well before 1984.

Anyone remember the Long Island Game Farm? I remember many school field trips to that place.

I remember Jolly Rodgers very well. It had some outside amusement rides and an inside arcade with a snack counter next door. Not as big as Adventureland which was in Farmingdale, a few miles east on Hempstead Tpke. Not sure exactly when JR shut it's doors (I remember it from the '60's and '70's). The spot is now occupied by a Target store and parking lot.

Or Lindy as we call it

Moved here about a year ago from Copiague.

We should make a DIS meet for LIers..

:cool1:

I love the post! I can relate to everything except Grumman.

Some of my best memories are going clamming/crabbing/digging for muscles when I was a kid.

I was a Jersey girl for 8 years, but the majority of my life has been spent in Queens and ON Long Island  I will always have a special place in my heart for life here.

I miss the flea market @ Roosevelt Raceway. I was so sad when they tore the dilapidated building down. :sad1: Now it's a 55 and up neighborhood, though how anyone can afford to buy there in their retirement baffles me. :confused3
