A Long Island forward...ah memories.

I grew up going clamming and fishing on the sound. We would go out to Montauk Point and climb on the rocks while my father fished. You can't climb on the rocks anymore. The LIE didn't go out as far as it goes now, we used to take old Montauk highway, one lane in each direction.

Does anyone remember the flea market on 110? How about the drive in movie theater? We used to go see the Big Duck when it was still a poultry farm. How about the Commack arena?

I remember the Commack arena being a flea market back in 1994. LI Business Institute is a few shopping centers over from there and I would pass the arena everyday to the business school. Since then, however, they tore it down and put in a Borders, Babys R Us and a few other stores in there.

Anyone remember the Long Island Game Farm? I remember many school field trips to that place.

I don't really remember it oustide of pictures my parents took of me there. They told me that a deer actually had starting eating my pink jacket and my father had to go in and get it from the deer :goodvibes

Oh boy do I remember them! So many good times. This thread has made me so nostalgic and I'm still here. I miss Nunley's the most but I do remember Jolly Roger and there was a small amusement park who's name escapes me near New Hyde Park that I used to love.

You probably mean McGuiness', a small amusement park on Jericho Turnpike attached to an arcade/fast food place, with an actual semi-classy restaurant in the same building. When I was a child I referred to it as the Policeman Amusement Park, since there was a big cutout of a Policeman on the fence.

Alas, it hasn't been there in decades. It went the way of Kiddie City and the one that is now Queens Center on Queens Blvd in, of course, Queens.

I don't remember a playland there. I do remember when Queens Center opened. It was the biggest thing for us teenagers.

:faint: ... Nope Uncle Sam's was the DISCO(I used to go to an exercise class there) SPIT was what the club turned into on Thursday nites.-(at least I think it was thursday) and you entered through a door in the back- it was more Punk
And on Radio WLIR! Donna Donna

Larry the Duck and Malibu Sue! Larry is now on Sirius. I think on First Wave (Sirius 6022 on Dish Network). Malibu Sue is now on WMJC 94.3 (aka Island 94.3).

I used to love listening on Thursday nights for the Screamer/Shriek of the Week. And the concerts that they had replayed on Tuesdays!

My uncle gave me a heads up back in 1985 that WLIR was going to be broadcasting a 1982 Duran concert. Got my cassette set up in my stereo and taped the whole thing. I've been listening on and off to WLIR since then. They were my official Duran Duran station! They got us Duranies pysched for Duran's concerts by playing Duran songs for a full hour prior to their concerts and got us home by playing Duran for a full hour afterwards :cloud9:

Muffycat: From a description you gave of your house in another thread...I KNEW it was your house. I pass by your house almost every day and I always said to myself that it is a very pretty one. Actually, one of the ones I sorta admire. ;)

You seriously can tell where I live? :rotfl:
I knew there had to be another Diser in Levittown somewhere. :)

Does anyone remem ber after Uncle Sam's/ Spit closed they opened a mature adult lounge.
It lasted maybe 2 months.

My 13th b'day was spent at Adventureland. Little did I know that Twisted Sister was playing there that night-this was when the first album was about to come out. Place was packed and when I told the guy in the ticket both it was my b'day, I got a Crazy Eddie (!) t-shirt!

Just went to Adventureland back in April with our DS4. The music they play now is nothing but 80's music :woohoo:!

How about the roller rinks? Good old Levittown and USA. Levittown is now a drug store, what a shame.

The roller rink we went to was 2002 in Sayville. It's been a flea market since 2002 went out. But I still remember what the roller rink looked like inside and think back to it the few times I've been in the flea market.

The other rink was in Bayshore and just closed down, I would say, in the last 5-10 years or so.

As a Girl Scout back then, there were only two places to get the uniforms: Barishes in Freeport and JC Penney.

Grants, Mays and Gertz department stores. I worked for Gimbels for three years until they closed their doors.

Suzanne

In addition to JCPenny's, GS and BS uniforms could be bought at Swezey's, which went out of business about 2-3 years ago.

I remember Grants (barely, I was little back then)! We had one about a half a mile from us. Then it changed into a Woolco, then a Caldors and now nothing.

I love Adventureland!! When I was in highschool my friends and I used to go all the time.

Does anyone remember Hot Skates in Lynbrook? I had my third grade birthday party there and I wore a short set that had roller skates on the shirt, I thought I was so cool lol. :lmao:

Yep, you described your house as a sorta dollhouse. Just from that (and you described your fence) I knew which house was yours. I live not far from you and I pass by often. I've always admired your house because it's a beautiful style, and pretty colors.

There has to be more Levittown Dis'ers. Because I see a lot of cars with Disney attenna toppers, license plate frames, and window clings. If they aren't Dis'ers, well, they should be!

Oh, that's not my house. I know which one you're talking about it.
It does look like a doll house, doesn't it? It's so cute!
I live closer to the high school.

I see alot of antenna toppers also and figured there had to be some. :)

I live in Pittsburgh now, but I grew up in New Hyde Park (just over the border from the city - the lighting changes).

Nevermind All American or Roy Rogers - remember Wetsons? Or Jahns?

I was back two years ago for my parents' funeral (both killed in a car accident). Everything changed, but nothing really did.

How I miss Jahns....I used to go in with my GF's and we would order a six scoop sundae of black raspberry ice cream with the Fruit Salad topping....UMMMMMMMM!

I just remembered two more:

The Pop Shoppe-a store with nothing but soda in bottles. My favorite was Lime Rickey

Zipz. An Ice Cream place where they put your ice cream in a bowl (typically, they had a baseball hat bowl) and then you picked your toppings from a toppings bar. OMG, messy but good!

We need DIS window clings, lol! Then we can identify ourselves to the rest of the public. There are a lot of us on LI from the sounds of the thread, but here where I live, we've got all the people who just had to live near the mouse. :teeth:

Here's a good one for you. We had a pizza parlor open right up the block from us. We went the first week they were open, since we've had decent success finding NYers who make pizza right here (crust cracks, cheese gets the orange oil on top). We watch them toss the dough the right way, and the pizza comes out-it's perfect. Orange oil and everything. Garlic powder, oregano, cheese and red pepper flakes on the table (woohoo). Taste it and it was PERFECT!

Since then, we've been there about a half dozen times and we end up talking to the owner. He keeps opening pizza places and selling them off once he's got a big following (offered to sell us this one when it has a big enough crowd, lol). When we told him it was just like what we would get in NY, he explained that he learned from a guy in Lynbrook. In the small world part of it, the guy who taught him worked at a pizza joint that my dad had worked in when I was a baby!

I've got three places that make real NY pizza within a 20 minute drive, and two more on the other side of town. Only one bagel place that's like NY-fortunately, they've got bialys, too.

I know of 1 "dollhouse" home near me. I'm north of the Turnpike in the Flower blocks section. Anyone nearby, lol.

I grew up in Queens and moved to LI 15 years ago...and boy does all of this bring back memories for me! I was a SPIT'S girl too!! My best friend thought I was nuts when I was taking her in through the back door!

All American...we had it this weekend! My DD was PMSing and HAD to have it!

Mel6197...Hi from another Lindy Bulldog!

Former LI'er checking in! My whole family still lives there (parents and younger sis in Ridge, older sis in Holbrook, Anuts/unlces in Islip/Shirley/Levittown).

I miss LI. The familiarity of it. Knowing right where everything was and always being able to find SOMETHING to do even if it was just going to a diner for a pizza-burger. We are in NC now and I like it here, but LI is always home. I miss the beach too.

I grew up in Shirley and then moved to Ridge and then settled in Babylon with my Dbf (now DH) before moving to Islip and the NC.

BTW both DH and I worked as cameramen (err woman!) for News 12. I kinda miss that place too. Is Norm Dvoskin still there telling his corny jokes while doing the weather?

OMGH...How could I forget ALL AMERICAN BURGER in Massapequa?? Ugh...we used to fight over who got assigned to cover any stories in Massapequa (at News 12) JUST so we could go eat there! I also miss Meson ole', decent pizza (DH likes Pizza Supreme in New Hyde Park), real Bagels, Green Cactus (on South Oyster Bay Road) and driving on the parkways towards the beach in summer...just crossing the bridge to get to the beach and smelling that salt in the air and knowing you'd be covered in tanning OIL and toasting in a few short minutes.

Anybody else remember when Smith Point Park Beach actually had a BEACH? Now the water practically touches the boardwalk from the erosion.

How I miss Jahns....I used to go in with my GF's and we would order a six scoop sundae of black raspberry ice cream with the Fruit Salad topping....UMMMMMMMM!

There is still one in Richmond Hill, Queens. Now there is where you got a Kitchen Sink! It was $7.95-$9.95 and we'd pay with all the change. Poor waitresses. :sad2:

A block off of the Village Green with the big pool?

Here's a blast from the past. I used to work at Up's and Down's in the Sunrise Mall! And I still remember the day that Brian Stetzer came into the mall with his girlfriend to shop. It was right after the first Stray Cats album came out. That was a cool day to be at work!

The bass player in the Stray Cats was my music teacher's son. I used to have my lessons in her studio with the Cats practicing in their garage right below. (This was before their first album was released.) I remember I used to get annoyed at how hard it was to concentrate on playing Mozart with rockabilly music blasting right below me! If I had known they were going to be famous one day I would have asked for their autographs instead of being annoyed!

::yes:: I do. My parents have a picture of my brother and I at Smith Point sitting on the sand. Sadly where we sat is now under water :(. Friends of ours live down that area of William Floyd Parkway.

DH has a picture I took of him on the boardwalk of The Casino restaurant at Davis Park, Fire Island. We had dinner there only once. The next year, the ocean clamed it and now that area is pretty much under water :(
