A little (somewhat boring) warning from me....

Some of you may recall that much earlier this year I had some malignant melanoma removed. Sadly, one of them had gone to a stage two tumor and this involved some horrible medication, a short course of radiotherapy and a more serious operation in May. Two weeks ago I was in for a check up (which I thought would be the all clear) and another pre-malignant mole was found which I had removed yesterday

Considering the nature or this forum and the fact that we all love to travel to a hotter part of the world than most of us reside in, I cannot warn you enough to get checked any moles or marks you think may be abnormal, particularly if they start to itch or bleed

I've just had a few moles removed too, though they weren't malignant, they just used to catch on clothes straps and would bleed. I asked the doctor to check the others as I have loads and he was very blase about it and didn't even look at some of them! I'm a "factor 30" girl, though, so smother myself in it every morning before we go out when we're in Florida.

However I was caught out several times this year in the UK, forgetting how strong the sun can sometimes be here.

I think you've given us a very good warning, especially as quite a few of us are on our hols soon.

Living in the sun I always wear a very high factor suncream or more often sun block and am always preaching to our guests from home to wear a higher factor than what they come with.

I think you have chosen the right place to share your experience - especially as you have said many of us go to Florida for the sun.
DW has always been almost fanatical about ensuring the kids are constantly covered in high factor protection, and it's stories like your that remind us the reasons why it's so important.

I am quite moley, and have had loads removed, not because they are a problem, but just to get rid of them really. I have about 3 on my back which I ear marked for removal, I've just got to get round to getting to the GP.

This is not a boring thread at all, it's just a reminder to take care in the sun, which most of us can easily forget to do with the excitement of being in Florida (or somewhere else hot)

Thats exactly the point the most damage is done here, at home when we forgot how exposed we are. My doc said to me the damage is done when you stand at the washing line everyday, walk to and from school every day etc. If only we could all get into the habit of applying sunscreen most days.

Mrs Pegasus! Me too, I am of irish extraction and have typical fair, freckled skin and mouse/redish hair (naturally) I have a 5yo DD who has very pale skin and red hair and I am religious with the sun cream. I used to have to wear a tshirt in the pool on holiday when I was younger and I hated it so took it off and I don't remember the application of much cream so hopefully our children have a better start that they will thank us for later
I'd hate her to have to go through what I have this year.

Yesterdays procedure was a bit more painful than I thought it would be, thought I would be going out tonight I had to had some IV pain relief which always makes me really nauseous too

Sorry you are having to go through this.

I have 2 daughters who have different skin tones, DD1 takes after me, and is very fair with reddish hair, and DD2 who takes after DH, and has blonde hair but more olivey easily tanned skin.

DD1 wears suncream all the time, DD2 can't be bothered and likes to tan a bit. We went to Filey with relatives on that really hot weekend the other month, I slathered them both in factor 50 suncream, but then they didn't think they needed to reapply it after going in the sea for 20 minutes or so. They are 17 and 16, so of course they know best, they fell asleep for an hour or so, and woke up to really red raw sunburn. I slathered them both in loads of aloe vera for days afterwards. DD2 was in a right state, as she hates to be ill or in need of medical attention of any sort, so she was miserable for days until the sunburn cleared up.

I hope it means they have learned their lesson, but only time will tell, DD1 still takes her suncream everywhere and covers up, but DD2 can't be bothered half the time.

Not boring at all, this is so important. My three girls have all taken after me so I've brought them up to not set foot outside the house in summer months without sunscreen on, regardless of the weather, and to always wear at least factor 15 on their faces. I just hope they continue with this throughout their adult life and will do the same with their children.

Hope you're feeling a bit more comfortable tonight. You've had a rough time lately but just think of WDW and your cruise waiting for you in a few months time.

Good advice all round, and Joanne, never a boring topic at all, Im so sorry you have had such a rough time, I had a very odd mole removed from my back a few years ago and now Im always extra careful in the sun.

As others have said Joanne, this is not boring at all!

I thank you for posting this - I really do! the more awareness that is spread about this subject then the better!

I really hope that things are starting to look up with regards to this whole thing it's a shame that another premalignant mole was found, but at least it was caught then and not any later.

I also hope that everyone on this forum takes heed of what you say, and if just one person covers up/uses more suncream/gets a mole checked out, then that is a "success" in my opinion.

my sister had skin cancer on her face which was detected by a mole going black
im almost obsessed checking now
