This is just a very short report on my trip to NYC last week with DH while he was in a training class.

We arrived in NYC via Amtrak at 5:45PM Sunday 6/3/07. Instead of taking a cab from Mid Town to Lower Manhattan, we decided to try our hand at the subway system. Yea, missed our stop and had to go up and over to the other side to go back 2 stops. :lmao:

We were staying at the Holiday Inn on Gold and Platt. The room was a very nice size for a hotel room in the city. Nice size desk and King Size bed. The view out of the window was of the building across the street, but we were fine with it.....Wound up at a little Sports Bar/Irish Pub called Ryan's for a bite to eat and a drink. It was really raining.....hard!!

Unfortunately Monday it continued to rain quite a bit.....until around 1-1:30 so that cancelled any sightseeing plans I had for that day. I walked to where DH was in class and we did lunch together. Grabbed a fruit salad off a vendor and headed back to the hotel for some alone time - some me time and a well needed and deserved 2 hour nap!!! After DH got done class and came back we tried to decide where to go for dinner. We wound up going to a small restaurant called Carmine's in the Seaport area. WOW!!! It was THE BEST Salmon I have ever had.....when we were done, we walked outside and I then realized we were right by the Brooklyn Bridge.....what a beautiful sight at night, and of course, I forgot the camera!!! (bad, bad, me!!)

Tuesday was my day to take in some sights. I started on the Staten Island Ferry:

After getting off the Ferry, I checked out Battery Park. It was great!

The temporary memorial to 9/11 is in Battery Park:

I then hit the streets:

And made my way to Ground Zero. I really didn't know how to react. I remember that day as clear as anything as I was 8 months preggo with bean #3. I was watching the local morning news on FOX because they are the only channel that has local coverage until like 9am. I remember them going live to NYC where they thought that the plane that crashed into the first tower was an accident. As I watched the coverage, out of the corner of the screen came the second plane. I felt like I was kicked in the stomach and I had to sit down. I called DH to tell him what happened - it was a really bad day, for everyone in America. For the sensitivity of others, I am only posting a couple of pictures of the area, although I spent a little over an hour there and have many pictures of the timeline, tributes and pictures they have lining the fences. I cried - and I was not the only one. I didn't have anyone personally involved in the tragedy, but I still cried.

I hoofed it back and met DH for some pizza for lunch. After he went back to class, I walked down South Street to the Seaport - What a cool area that was!!! I went inside the mall they have there on the pier and did my shopping for the kids.

I got back to the room around 4:30 and was beat!!!! Dh had a long day then proceeded to answer work emails and whatnot. He was beat, so we hit Ryan's again fro some burgers and the Phillies/Mets game. I was leaving in the morning, so we just stayed there for a bit and headed back to the hotel around 10.

There is so much to see and do in NYC that cannot be accomplished in one day. If Monday had been nicer, I would have liked to get to Soho/Little Italy and Chinatown......and we have decided that the next week of training/Tech Ed (Microsoft convention I went for a few days with Dh to Boston last year) I am staying the whole time he is......yeah he is gone most of the day but in my pictures, storytelling, DH gets to live it as well!

Enjoy, hope it wasn't boring for you all!!

Tracie,

What a great report! I loved it. I've never been to NYC but would love to sometime! So, you were nervous about walking around that big city by yourself??? I'm not sure I'm brave enough for that. ;)

Thanks for posting - the pics are great too!

Thanks for the great report tlinus!!!:thumbsup2
I now have a craving for the food/sights/shows

I LOVE "my" city!
I grew up in the Bronx/Westchester co, now live in Orange co.
I'll need to tell DH it's time for some broadway tickets;)

Thank you for this report and the pictures! I was born and raised in Florida but went to college in New York City and it is my favorite place in the world! How did you like Amtrak? I used to take the train to N.Y. from Florida all the time and I loved it- I hate to fly!

its so amazing to see NY thru a tourist eyes, living here always you kind of take for granted all the amazing things there is to see. although im from Long Island, a trip to the city is always amazing...im so glad you enjoyed your trip you definetly have to see china town and little italy on your next trip, the best cannoli's and shopping..

Melissa -

I had walked around Boston by myself last June while DH attended TechEd (Microsoft convention). I wasn't nervous at all, really - which is pretty surprising for me :lmao: There are people walking around all day (and night)!

NYMom - get yourself on into the city! The only complaint I had was after it POURED rain for that long, it kinda smelled "funny", kwim? I would love to go back soon!

dsmom - It took an hour and 25 minutes each way from the train station in Philly to New York. I really enjoyed the train. It made alot more sense than driving in and parking a car that wouldn't move all week!

NYmomof3 - it is neat to see your city through a tourists eyes. I really don't think too much about downtown with the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, etc. It would only take me about 20 minutes to get there and walk around, but its one of those things you "take for granted" - but be sure I would love to see a review of it through someone else's point of view!!

Thanks all for the feedback. I need to get back there one day soon!!! Cannolis are my guilty pleasure (ricotta cheese and chocolate chip for me!!)

Thanks for sharing this report with us! I got this link from the "Something about Nothing" thread.

I loved the pics, and no it was not boring!

It would be cool if there were a section on the DIS for "other" trip reports!

Thank you Tracie!!!

What a great report! You definately need to stay longer next time! Pulled at my heartstrings to see the WTC stuff....(but i knew what you meant)....done nicely :thumbsup2 I'd love to get up there one day and see all that "touristy" stuff...but, it'll be a 'family affair' and i'd like to wait till DS is learning about it in school so it will be more interesting to him (kinda like goin' to DC)..

I loved looking at all the pictures....thanks so much for taking and writing about them!

I totally agree! I have lived here all my life but don't really see the city from a visitor point of view. But it actually is incredible and the history of the city is unbelievable. I was there lst Thursday for the HS prom...we were at the Tribeca rooftop. In a word, the place is FABULOUS!!

Hi Tracie! It took me forever, but I promised I would eventually make it over here. What a great little report. I love reading about the experiences other people have when they take a trip to the city. It's amazing, isn't it?!

I just had to say that we'e all huge fans of Carmines! They have the BEST seafood! And the South Street Seaport is one of my favorite places. It's so much fun to just walk around and shop and take in the sites.

You have an amazing camera! Those pictures are GORGEOUS! Really, really gorgeous. Thanks so much for sharing, I really enjoyed it!

How in the world did I miss this for so long????? What a wonderful report Tracie. I have never been to New York and those pics were amazing, almost felt like I was right there too! Thanks so much for sharing.

Enjoyed the WTC future Memorial site pics. You know I have driven by the Murrah Building Memorial but can not get myself to go in. I did stop one day and go to the fence while they were building it to see some of the memorial things that had been hung by others and shed many tears that day. Maybe some day I will be able to force myself to do a proper visit.

Again, thanks so much for sharing your trippie!

I really appreciate you being sensitive and not posting a million pictures of ground zero. I lost family in 9/11 and work in the area and cannot tell you how hard it is to constantly see tourists taking pictures like there's a Mickey statue behind them, not realizing how grave it is to the people that live and have lost there. I really appreciate you understanding this.

Ser -

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I tossed around the idea of not including it in the report, but chose a little snippet for history purpose instead. I know that 6 years later it is still a very sensitive subject and hope that I have respected the feelings of those left behind.

 thanks for reading and understanding

Just read your trip report to NYC and the pics. I got to go to THE CITY about 3 years ago on a long weekend tour in June.

Wow - coming from small town West Virginia, this was an eye opener. I just couldnt' get over the amount of people everywhere!!!

We got to see Ground Zero too - it was very somber.

I got teary-eyed when I first saw the Statue of Liberty from our bus as we made our way into New York. That was when I knew we had made it.

You have got to go to Chinatown. We didn't eat here because of our "tour" but the street vendors were just hard to believe. Everybody's just out on the street selling all kinds of stuff.

Thanks for the report and the pics.
