Say you were offered an oppurtunity to spend 6 months in Italy with room and board paid for, would you do it?

ARRGHH! Ok, here's the story: Mind you at first I thought they were joking, but they aren't! A friend of ours is being transferred to Italy (he's a pilot) and his wife (who is awesome) wants me to go with them to Italy next Jan/Feb while DH is deployed in Afgahn. and stay for 6mos or until DH comes home. They will pay for room and board for me and the girls, and Remy can attend the school on base there. I would be helping my friend take care of their 3 boys (who are dolls; not hellions like my girls) and just keep her company. I want to go, DH is cool with it, but there are some slight issues to take into consideration.

We have housing here, and there are plenty of people offering to house sit while I am gone. We also have a dog and cat which would be included with the house sitting. BUT...is that allowed? Can we hire one of the soldiers to do this with us being in military housing? I don't want to lose our apt.

So far that is my only concern. I want to go so bad I can taste it. I love history and there are just so many things to see there. Plus my friend wants to hop around Europe and see EVERYTHING! She is a great person, so much fun to hand out with and I WANT TO GO!!

What do ya'll think? We are heading over to their house tonight for a BBQ and she is going to ask me again. I would like to give her an answer LOL.

I think it's an incredible opportunity for you and the children! Go for it! I'd do it in a heartbeat (as long as the housitting and petsitting worked out).

It looks like this is the only concern. If you can find out if you can have someone house-sit and not lose your housing, I would go for it. It sounds like a great opportunity all around.

As far as the housesitting thing...isn't there somebody you could call to find out if indeed it is allowed? If it's allowed, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

My only hesitation would be Remy. Not too long ago she was having some issues. I'd be concerned about relocating her to a different country and how that might affect her state of mind. Definitely something to discuss with the therapist I guess.

Do these folks have the money to do that? Are you SURE it would work the way they say?

Those 3 things aside......I would definitely go if it was in my power!

I think I would go, as long as you can work it out so you don't lose your apartment.....from what I hear from a friend it can be hard to find military housing. See if you can find out any information, do you have a lease and what does it say. Sounds like one of those once in a lifetime opportunities to me.

I would go as long as you wouldn't lose your house. You will have so much fun.

We have hired someone to house/pet sit before but it has only been for a month. I am not sure about the rules for 6mos of being gone. Anyone know LOL?

Honestly, with the issues Remy is having I'd check with her doctors to see what they think of this. If I were in your position part of me would think a change might do her good but another part might think one more change is the last thing she needs. It does sound like a wonderful opportunity and if it were in everyone's best interest I'd certainly jump at it. Hope it works out for you.

This was my first thought too. How is she doing, do you think she will handle the change well? Have you talked to her therapist? Other than that, I'd jump at it, it sounds like an amazing opportunity, but I'd have to say see what her therapist says first. Good Luck

Umm, if you decide not to go, Can I? LOL I say, "DO IT!!!!!" :) It sounds like a wonderful opportunity.

I would check with your daughter's doctors. It may not be a good idea to uproot her and start with a new therapist.

I know at Fort Bragg we had to have special permission to vacate our housing for more than 3 weeks. It was done on a case by case basis as lots of people would leave for thanksgiving through new year but 6 months I don't know. I would definitely not do it without talking to an official though because they could consider your apartment abandoned and confiscate your belongings in the process. Call the housing office and make an appointment.

Sorry, forgot to answer that in my earlier post :)

If you're not going to lose your housing and da hubby is cool with it. It's a chance of a lifetime, I'd go for it. What a learning experience for the girls and you.

Your daughter has been indulging in self-injurious behavior. It would not be a good idea to drag her to the other side of the world while you are getting her stabilized regardless of the opportunity.

I'm not sure what the issues are with your daughter and have no idea about military housing. Could you possibly just go and visit them for a few weeks? You can still see and do a lot in a few weeks without uprooting anybody.
