This is an extention of my bumping experience thread, but I think it warrants a seperate post to make sure folks heed this warning. We voluntarily accepted an overnight stay at the airport Hyatt on Fri., in order to get two RT tickets each in the future. However, they send your luggage on to your destination right then and there. So we were left with the clothes on our backs. I can't emphasize enough how important it is, and here's the warning, pack these things in your carry on:
1. Undies, at least one pair for times like this!
2. Travel size shampoo, SO glad I had my favorite
3. Hair brush
4. Medicine, even little stuff like travel Tylenol
5. One fresh tshirt, one pair xtra shorts
6. Most important!! Cell phone charger, never check that.

You won't see your luggage again for 24 hrs if you accept an overnight bump, we would do it all over again in a second, but please trust me, when you leave Disneyworld, pack your carry on with care, you never know when you can get a "gift" of free flights.

It depends on how desperate the airline is for a volunteer. I've seen airlines take the time to pull the luggage for a volunteer. I've also seen them pull the luggage for a passenger being involuntarily bumped.

You're right, the normal policy is your checked luggage makes your flight, even if you don't.

You can always use the shampoo supplied by the hotel, or not shampoo your hair that morning. Most hotels will provide complimentary items like razor, toothbrush etc if you ask at the front desk.

Lewis, I was referring to the ladies here on the shampoo thing, we did have shampoo supplied from the Hyatt, but if you want your favorite kind, pack it.

As far as the luggage goes, I said to the woman, I can see my luggage right there (pointing to outside), and she said its a security issue, they cannot retreave it once its gone past security, sniffing etc. It wasn't a huge issue, but just wanted to give everyone a big heads up in case they thought they could have everything back if they accepted the bump.

Thanks Jill! I always carry the extra things you mentioned. Having suitcases arrive the day AFTER you arrive is not too convenient either. :)

Thanks for the warning! Sorry you got caught on the fence.

I can do without my favorite shampoo for a night, BUT, I cannot due without a change of fresh clothing!

This is why bumped or not, we ALWAYS pack an extra set of clothes in a carry on for each family member. We go in the summer so this does not take up much room at all. We do this just in case our luggage for some reason did make it to our hotel (we use the Magical Express). We also do this because we have meds that must be taken daily so this is never checked either.:dance3:

Thanks for posting. It's good advice.
we have voluntarily taken a couple bumps. Usually I review the airline schedules ahead of time and we decide before we leave for the airport if we're willing to be bumped or not. If we are, I do a carry on a cosmetic bag, toothbrush, etc. we never pack car charges, always have them with us and well as any electonics. I don't sweat the change of clothes too much, but if theres room on our carryon's will do what I can. We also decide ahead of time who will go if they only need 1 or 2 to be bumped.
Last year on one trip, DD and I took the bump. DH flew on time, took the luggage home, then came back to the airport to pick us up.
On another trip all four of us took an overnight bump. The hotel was very accomodating with razors and toothbrushes.
And last summer, DH took a bump while DD and I flew home as scheduled.

We're usually less eager to take a bump going TO WDW.

With increased airline fares, the bumps have allowed us to still go to WDW 3 times a year.

:thumbsup2, we do too!! makes things a lot easier for whenever things pop up

This is really good advice which I do not heed consistently on the way home. I'm always really careful about how we pack our carry-on on our way TO our vacation, but usually just throw things in whatever bags on our way home. The only things we're consistently careful about are homework and electronic chargers. We should be more careful with other things -- and pack a set of fresh clothes (although I don't always have that on my way home) -- and will try to remember that in the future. As someone who has been bumped in the past, you'd think I'd do that. (Of course, they did pull our checked bags, so that was nice.)

Yes, excellent advice to pack essentials in the carry-on, even on the way home. I didn't used to bother on the way home, thinking that I had clothes, medications, etc at home if my luggage was lost.

Until the one time that we missed our connection....our luggage made it home but we did not! It was Delta's fault that we missed the connection, last flight out for the day. They put us in a hotel for the night with meal vouchers....but no jammies, had to wear the same sweaty (Aug theme park sweaty ) clothes the next day, no special cleanser for my face, and yes, hotel brand shampoo!!!!!

To make matters worse, they put us on the very first flight the next day, so with waiting for the shuttle TO the hotel and being back for security check the next morning, we only got about 4 hours sleep!!!! Delta has been my sworn enemy ever since.....

Its funny you mention the time of your flight the next morning, Airtran gave us a choice, 9:00 am or 2:00, I chose 2:00 for that very reason. I didn't want to get up that early for security and what the heck, I was in a free hotel room for the night! And another plus is Hyatt's checkout time isn't till noon, very nice!

Just remember that all costs $45 now with Spirit. Still a gift flight but less so.

It's only $45 if you wait until you get to the gate to pay. Otherwise it's $30.

All of your essential carryon items will fit in your personal bag. The bag that you can stow under the seat in front of you for no charge.

I suspect Spirit would pay for involuntary denied boarding.

i would also add a big t-shirt or something to sleep in. i don't like sleeping in the clothes i wore all day, nor wearing the clothes i slept in the night before :scared:
we learned that when our flight was cancelled (last one of the day).

I have Owner's Locker, so I pretty much only do carry-on, but I learned that I still want to carry with me my 3-1-1 bag filled with those necessities like a toothbrush, toothpaste, facial cleanser, etc. I volunteered for a Delta bump once and was glad I had my bags and a minimum of cosmetics with me.
