Day 8 – September 23rd – Morimoto
Although we had enjoyed their company, Trent was excited that we were back on our own trip plan in terms of food – and boy did we have some making up to do with our
Disney dining plan!!! First stop was somewhere that we had both been so excited about since we found out it was opening:
We were running late for this reservation as I decided it would be easier to catch the bus to Disney Springs. I was naïve about this as I had not been there since they had done it all up and assumed it couldn’t be much bigger than downtown Disney. Boy was I wrong! And the bus stops were SOOOOOO annoying. Ours was furthest away and it was frustrating to be ‘spat’ straight out into shopping without a clear view of where everything is (as opposed to the open plan Downtown Disney). We found a map and made it over, only a few minutes late.
Not to worry – they were running over an hour late!!!!! And were turning away those without reservations or offering a wait of 2hrs 45 mins!!!! I couldn’t believe it. They didn’t have pagers here and so we were told to wait out the front and they would call us.
Trent went up every 20 mins to check where we were and we were constantly told to keep waiting. After 1hr and 20 mins of this I was SOOOOO frustrated and glad we had pre-dinner snacks in the room. When Trent went up the last time, they said they had let go our reservation because we didn’t come when called!!! I was FURIOUS! They hadn’t called anyone in the last half hour and we were checking regularly! The manager took one look at me (now very hangry!) and apologised when he realised the mistake – they cleared a table and sat us right away after that!
I tried to not let that experience hamper the meal – after all it was easily just a mis-communication. Our server was lovely, and I felt relaxed again by the time I had looked over our menu options! This was basically about to be a meal of all my favourite foods!
Trent ordered a specialty drink:
Vietnamese Iced Coffee - $5
There was so much to choose from here, but we were super hungry from the wait so we ordered pretty quickly!
Trent and I shared our appetisers:
Pork Dumplings - pork, Napa cabbage, scallion $11
Spicy Salmon Sushi - salmon, spicy mayo, scallion $10
Peta was delighted by the vegetarian options, and started with the vegetarian sushi, on the right.
Vegetable Sushi - asparagus, carrot, avocado, spring mix, cucumber $7
They even brought out GF soy sauce which can be a real rarity at restaurants!
The Dumplings were steaming hot and went down a treat! You could tell the sushi was freshly prepared and we all enjoyed our options. I did think that the mayo on the salmon wasn’t really spicy at all but the salmon was so fresh it just melted in our mouths, so that didn’t really matter.
Service was super quick, and before we knew it, our mains were arriving:
Morimoto Peking Duck - carved house-roasted whole duck, served with steamed flour pancakes, apricot sweet chili and hoisin miso; minimum of two guests and half duck orders are not available; priced per person $27
This is a house special shared by Trent and I and it did not disappoint! The duck was hot and tender, the pancakes thin and moreish and the dipping sauce was a nice change from standard Hoisin sauce! This is a signature meal for a reason and I would highly recommend it!
Peta was not overly impressed with our choice of main, but she went with:
Morimoto Pad Thai - sweet tamarind sauce, stir-fried flat rice noodles, egg, bean sprouts, scallions, fried tofu, pickled turnip $24
Peta enjoyed this, but struggled to make it through it all after the sushi appetiser. She did comment it was a bit sweeter than we are used to with Pad Thai.
After dinner, we ordered dessert pretty quickly as our long wait had meant it was now getting quite late. There is a good tea menu here, and I ordered one as I had not yet ordered a drink. Peta did the same and I forgot to take photos – oops!
We both had
Dragon Pearl Jasmine Tea $4
Lots of the desserts here are for 2 people, so Trent and I shared:
Chocolate Cream and Crunch - for two. Oreo tempura, mandarin orange jelly, dark chocolate gelato, hazelnut chocolate crunchies $16
The minute Trent saw Oreo Tempura on the menu, there really was no other choice!
Peta got her own (2 person dessert!):
Cream Caramel - for two. Yuzu caramel sauce, black sesame whipped cream, black sesame air cake $16
The waitress did tell us we could get 3 but it seemed greedy and I thought it was odd that a two person dessert could count for each person! Despite this, we really just shared between the 3 of us and we thoroughly enjoyed them. Flavours in Asian desserts really appeal to us and I liked that they weren’t too rich due to having some savoury like elements and lots of components.
Food: 4/5 – Absolutely delicious!
Service: 3/5 – Once we were seated it was good – front of house staff caused us a few issues though
Experience: 3/5 – Very sophisticated space and we enjoyed the booth. I think it would be a much better experience if we were sat where we could see the kitchen or sushi bar though.
