Dining Plan Tally Day 7

You have really great details in your reviews! I can't wait to hear more! We just got back from our trip not too long ago. We were there from February 26-March 3rd. We had the Most Awesome time! We had breakfast at Crystal Palace, and we weren't impressed by the service, or the food, but the characters were fun! Our favorites this time was Chef Mickey's Brunch and Be Our Guest lunch. Your Brunch at the California Grill looked Amazing! I've never eaten there before.

Day 8 – September 23rd – Breakfast – 1900 Park Fare

As our last morning at the Grand Floridian, we were excited to head to one of our favourite character meals. Trent was not too thrilled that this was yet another buffet but I was excited to head straight for 1900 Park Fare!

The last time we were here they took a welcome photo before we entered and I was disappointed to find that was no longer the case.

Originally we had an early reservation but I got on last minute and moved it to 8.30am. This was a good call for us as we had spent the night before out and then packing and then we could get up a little later. In the end we still hadn’t finished packing, but this wasn’t a huge deal as Clint and Steph were planning to meet friends in the evening and also opted for a late start.

When we got to breakfast it was super busy! I kind of regretted my decision with that respect, but an extra hours sleep was definitely beneficial……….

32924031054_98b8eaa164.jpg

Poor Peta perhaps needed even more! (This was taken shortly after breakfast)

The food here seemed almost out when we got there and they weren’t very quick to replenish. We did get a quick run of the buffet:

I was happy there was at least Salmon, but nothing else wowed me. That Blintz looked great but was tasteless ☹. Gravy was cold and so were the potatoes.

33726309826_1b8eea9dd2.jpg

Trent liked the choice here but he didn’t really finish much – his food was cold too. The croissant was the highlight for him.

Standard breakfast fare and Peta had difficulty here – the chef didn’t come out for quite a while and seemed a little put out. In addition there were very few choices and Peta wasn’t offered anything not already out (I remember thinking it was a little odd they didn’t even offer an allergy muffin or something). Like I said, they were busy and you could definitely tell by the service.

At least Peta was saved by the make your own omelette option:

33382531260_16e58f79f3.jpg

Trent and I regretted not going this option but there was a very long line. Thankfully, we were quickly swamped by characters instead, and we weren’t really here for the food:

At this stage, we were unfortunately seated between 2 tables with babies on them – which at WDW is no big surprise, but it did cause us problems with the character interaction. They seemed ok with the face characters, but both burst into tears when Pooh bear came out. As a result, we were entirely missed…..3 times.

By then, I was a bit put off by waiting, especially as I had asked for more hot tea 3 times and it had not been brought. We arranged to pay the bill, and I told the server what had happened. She just apologised and didn’t offer to do anything, but at that moment a senior cast member came over to check on our experience (he was just doing the rounds) and I mentioned it to him. He also apologised and I just asked politely if there was anyway we could just get a photo, although I understand they have to do set rounds. He took us over by the kitchen and brought Pooh out especially! I thanked him profusely and we got our snaps:

33610453322_13972e3057.jpg

That definitely made up for some of the bad service!

And so, the score card:

Food: 2/5 – Standard breakfast fare, cold food, and poor choices for Peta

Service: 3/5 – The supervisor made up some of this but CMs were not very attentive

Experience: 4/5 – The characters here are super fun, but we would pick a quieter time next time – this had a huge impact on our experience.

The characters have so much charisma here and we were wowed by all of them!!! Here they interact super well with the adults as well, and even with the poor food (which may have been saved by the omelettes) We will be back - maybe earlier in the morning next time.

Boo for a pretty crumby experience at 1900 Park Fare. This is always the worry with character breakfasts, they are so hit or miss, on both the characters and the food. And it is pretty riddiculous that at a buffet they couldn't accomodate Peta. Glad you ultimately had a good attitude about the whole thing.

Spoiler alert - but Skipper Canteen were not able to do gluten free vegetarian.....and fed Peta meat based stock despite consulting with the chef. They were the least accommodating we found. Every other TS worked with us. Best QS to work with was definately Cosmic Rays despite the hold up with the CM at the front. That Falafel burger was definitely a great choice.

How did you find out about the meat stock and how did they handle it?

Bummer that the food wasn't great at 1900 Park Fare. We have a breakfast there next month. Of course, we will have a toddler with us, so it should be fun if he does well with the characters.

Full report will be coming soon, but they realised after Peta had already had a taste - and brought the manager, chef and server out to manage the situation. I think they were surprised that we did not cause a scene. They were very concerned when they arrived at the table to tell us! Full report on that soon, so stay tuned!

I did think it was odd they were not accommodating, but at the end of the day it was the characters here that make the meal! We had fun :)

Day 8 – September 23rd – Snacks on the Boardwalk

After breakfast we took the opportunity to pack up at a more leisurely pace, pop out to the local Marshalls and Ross for a quick shop and then head over to our next round of accommodation. Boy was I excited as we pulled up to:

32953991393_eec7be4512.jpg

We had planned to stay here last trip but changed to renting elsewhere at the last minute, and I regretted that we had never been to the boardwalk! Moving from the VGF this actually felt like a bit of a down grade, but I was excited about being able to walk to HS and EPCOT.

In light of Clint and Steph’s experience changing dining plans, we then head straight into the Boardwalk Screen Door General Store to use up some snack credits:

32954048933_9d5c26cf2e.jpg

Because of our meal choices at AK we also had some meals which we converted to 3 snacks – a TERRIBLE use of the deluxe dining plan, but then we knew it was likely to happen at some point.

While we were there we grabbed a snack each to enjoy in our room later (Pre-dinner):

33382478930_57f7f0f4ea.jpg

Rice Crispie Treat (BB-8) – $4.99 - Which Trent ended up saving to take home, after seeing:

32924071454_11b42a97ef.jpg

Peanut Butter Cookie - $3.99

32924068024_452aced610.jpg

Peta and I shared a Caramel Apple - $5.99 (I love the plain, but it’s worth noting if you don’t that only the plain ones are a snack credit).

After our shopping, taking the above snacks to our room, and a less than fulfilling breakfast, we also wandered over to the Boardwalk Bakery, where Trent and I discovered:

33726279416_6ec8cf5bff.jpg

Tinkerbell Cupcake - $4.19. This was delicious and had a buttercream filling. Tasted somewhat like a pina colada!

Peta grabbed Chocolate Fudge from the General store (and I forgot a photo – sorry!) - $4.39 – she said it was rich and delicious and she nearly made it through it (it was huge!).

By then it was mid afternoon, and, after sitting in the heat eating our snacks, we decided to head back over to the store to each grab a slushie! These are also snack credits and given it was very warm, it was the perfect way to cool down.

33637946121_1d490cc13d.jpg

33767093745_6c655ea93b.jpg

Assorted Slushy Drinks - $3.49 each

I originally had the lemon lime but I swapped with Peta as she found her fruit punch one FAR too sweet! It was standard American fruit punch flavour but Peta wasn’t familiar with it at all and it is much sweeter than any drinks we would have at home. Trent enjoyed his Lemonade one.

As we were getting these Clint and Steph messaged to say they were just heading over to HS for their last day in the parks. Thankfully there was a boat right there for us and we boarded, slushies in hand to head straight there.

Good timing! As we walked up, more rare characters were out! We hit a bunch before Tracking Steph and Clint down:

32924030104_76e840df77.jpg

32953998313_934c2c571a.jpg

Then we helped Clint and Steph use up their credits by getting Reuben a BB rice crispie treat (On Trent’s suggestion!)

32924030764_383ae49791.jpg

After hitting all the rides again, care of FP+, we were super sad to have to say goodbye to Steph and Clint. We had the most wonderful time with them and were super glad they took up our offer of a trip (I know a lot of people may have found it weird to be offered free accommodation and I was worried it would be awkward!).

Ahh, I love the rare characters! Where exactly are they?

We saw them several times - to the right of the HS entrance - before the turnstiles. There is a big gate there where they come out to trial rare characters or train new cast members. Generally in mid-afternoon. Just need to get lucky!

Really enjoying your dining trip report--especially the spreadsheet when you don't drink soda (refillable mug) and don't eat many sweets. I have the same taste buds, and I think the regular dining plan makes that difficult. The deluxe which allows an appetizer rather than dessert seems like a better option, but seeing all the red in your spreadsheet makes me think it's hard to break even and you really have to eat the expensive buffets (askerhous and cinderellas) or signature dinners every meal. I will be interested to see the final tally! My spreadsheet is complicated by an annual pass discount that is 20% off some of the places I'm thinking about eating (special discount right now through September).

Day 8 – September 23rd – Morimoto

Although we had enjoyed their company, Trent was excited that we were back on our own trip plan in terms of food – and boy did we have some making up to do with our Disney dining plan!!! First stop was somewhere that we had both been so excited about since we found out it was opening:

33610422172_f0d859130c.jpg

We were running late for this reservation as I decided it would be easier to catch the bus to Disney Springs. I was naïve about this as I had not been there since they had done it all up and assumed it couldn’t be much bigger than downtown Disney. Boy was I wrong! And the bus stops were SOOOOOO annoying. Ours was furthest away and it was frustrating to be ‘spat’ straight out into shopping without a clear view of where everything is (as opposed to the open plan Downtown Disney). We found a map and made it over, only a few minutes late.

Not to worry – they were running over an hour late!!!!! And were turning away those without reservations or offering a wait of 2hrs 45 mins!!!! I couldn’t believe it. They didn’t have pagers here and so we were told to wait out the front and they would call us.

32924029194_95bf7959d3.jpg

Trent went up every 20 mins to check where we were and we were constantly told to keep waiting. After 1hr and 20 mins of this I was SOOOOO frustrated and glad we had pre-dinner snacks in the room. When Trent went up the last time, they said they had let go our reservation because we didn’t come when called!!! I was FURIOUS! They hadn’t called anyone in the last half hour and we were checking regularly! The manager took one look at me (now very hangry!) and apologised when he realised the mistake – they cleared a table and sat us right away after that!

I tried to not let that experience hamper the meal – after all it was easily just a mis-communication. Our server was lovely, and I felt relaxed again by the time I had looked over our menu options! This was basically about to be a meal of all my favourite foods!

Trent ordered a specialty drink:

32953997693_eb7391b38c_m.jpg

Vietnamese Iced Coffee - $5

There was so much to choose from here, but we were super hungry from the wait so we ordered pretty quickly!

Trent and I shared our appetisers:

32924028874_da2912cfc1.jpg

Pork Dumplings - pork, Napa cabbage, scallion $11

32954028943_a0b78fbfb6.jpg

Spicy Salmon Sushi - salmon, spicy mayo, scallion $10

Peta was delighted by the vegetarian options, and started with the vegetarian sushi, on the right.

Vegetable Sushi - asparagus, carrot, avocado, spring mix, cucumber $7

They even brought out GF soy sauce which can be a real rarity at restaurants!

The Dumplings were steaming hot and went down a treat! You could tell the sushi was freshly prepared and we all enjoyed our options. I did think that the mayo on the salmon wasn’t really spicy at all but the salmon was so fresh it just melted in our mouths, so that didn’t really matter.

Service was super quick, and before we knew it, our mains were arriving:

33637915321_60134e0bc4.jpg

32954021223_3e613e49fc.jpg

Morimoto Peking Duck - carved house-roasted whole duck, served with steamed flour pancakes, apricot sweet chili and hoisin miso; minimum of two guests and half duck orders are not available; priced per person $27

This is a house special shared by Trent and I and it did not disappoint! The duck was hot and tender, the pancakes thin and moreish and the dipping sauce was a nice change from standard Hoisin sauce! This is a signature meal for a reason and I would highly recommend it!

Peta was not overly impressed with our choice of main, but she went with:

32924045994_a597f8fa44.jpg

Morimoto Pad Thai - sweet tamarind sauce, stir-fried flat rice noodles, egg, bean sprouts, scallions, fried tofu, pickled turnip $24

Peta enjoyed this, but struggled to make it through it all after the sushi appetiser. She did comment it was a bit sweeter than we are used to with Pad Thai.

After dinner, we ordered dessert pretty quickly as our long wait had meant it was now getting quite late. There is a good tea menu here, and I ordered one as I had not yet ordered a drink. Peta did the same and I forgot to take photos – oops!

We both had Dragon Pearl Jasmine Tea $4

Lots of the desserts here are for 2 people, so Trent and I shared:

32924035384_ac0d1d0db4.jpg

Chocolate Cream and Crunch - for two. Oreo tempura, mandarin orange jelly, dark chocolate gelato, hazelnut chocolate crunchies $16

The minute Trent saw Oreo Tempura on the menu, there really was no other choice!

Peta got her own (2 person dessert!):

33767100995_ed7c72a4c4.jpg

Cream Caramel - for two. Yuzu caramel sauce, black sesame whipped cream, black sesame air cake $16

The waitress did tell us we could get 3 but it seemed greedy and I thought it was odd that a two person dessert could count for each person! Despite this, we really just shared between the 3 of us and we thoroughly enjoyed them. Flavours in Asian desserts really appeal to us and I liked that they weren’t too rich due to having some savoury like elements and lots of components.

Food: 4/5 – Absolutely delicious!

Service: 3/5 – Once we were seated it was good – front of house staff caused us a few issues though

Experience: 3/5 – Very sophisticated space and we enjoyed the booth. I think it would be a much better experience if we were sat where we could see the kitchen or sushi bar though.

Love the spread sheet! WE found having a vegitiarian that its very hard to break even with the DP.

YUM! I had sushi last month at Morimoto and I thought it was wonderful - I agree, though, the spicy mayo wasn't spicy enough (and I don't like too much spice), and there wasn't enough of it on my roll. Everything else looks so delicious. What a bummer that it took you that long to be seated. A 2 hr 45 minute wait for walkups?! Yikes!

Day 9 – September 24th – Cape May Café Breakfast

We were up pretty early again, for a breakfast that I recalled fondly. After getting ready, it was super easy to walk across to the Beach Club Resort (which we have never stayed at, but I love the relaxed vibe when you walk in!). Straight as you walk in from the boardwalk, my favourite buffet is just on the left:

33534291240_a81799fb28_z.jpg

We were running slightly late for our 7.30am reservation, but the CM at the podium was very friendly and said it wouldn’t be a problem.

They gave us a pager and we sat down just outside of the restaurant.

33075753364_8ae4eb43dc_z.jpg

It actually took less than 5 minutes for the pager to go off and we were escorted straight to a table that was nice and close to the buffet, but in a corner by the kitchen, which made for good positioning for service and characters!

If you haven’t been, the buffet here is efficient and has LOTS of choice, plus lots of healthy options. Peta is in heaven here with multiple fruit and salad choices and a great build it yourself yogurt parfait bar.

33762571982_c739176a48_z.jpg

She also got an Allergy waffle, care of our server:

33919277335_c043440954_z.jpg

Of course there are also all the hot, American options but that’s not what we were here for – although I did not resist a chance for biscuits and gravy (not something we have at home!):

33075810724_3955dc00a5_z.jpg

We had a long day ahead of driving to Tampa to go to Busch Gardens, and I was pretty much determined to eat my weight in salmon and asparagus like last time I was here! I went back a few times just for that.

33076021154_0515372de5.jpg

Though, as it turned out, this was not my favourite part of the buffet! I was also delighted by the addition of a made to order crepe bar and both Trent and I went back for a couple of these! They have a lot of topping options!

33919536495_f9db00829f_z.jpg

Beware the bananas!!!! (Banana caramel seems to be the most popular choice, but we actually had berries and cream)

The character interaction here happened quickly and almost in back to back succession. Presumably as half the restaurant was empty! Apparently in the chaos of the characters, I did not take many photos of our plates, but we each had a few! Sorry!

33919283455_c017d69ce1_z.jpg

33534379870_66a60900ce_z.jpg

33762592592_771b4487a5_z.jpg

33762599132_086bda6b19_z.jpg

And so, the score card:

Food: 5/5 – In our opinion, the best breakfast buffet on Disney property! Everything is hot, fresh and delicious, with so much variety!

Service: 5/5 – Very attentive server, who continually checked in to make sure Peta was accommodated OK!

Experience: 4/5 characters here are super fun and it’s just so relaxed!

Love the spread sheet! WE found having a vegitiarian that its very hard to break even with the DP.

Yes, that doesn't surprise us, but I hadn't really considered that until now, when doing all the sums. I highly doubt Peta will come out ahead.
