Last summer, some of you may recall I was frantic over a niece who was in a terrible situation with her mother (my brother's ex) and moved far far away. My niece around 13 at the time, began acting out in school, running away, in general crying out for help, but being isolated from those of us who cared...
it's a long story....
MY DH and I helped my brother (who although is unfit as a parent himself as he struggles with alcoholism, nonetheless loves his daugher dearly, which the woman who gave birth to her is apparently incapable of) to physically rescue his daughter, bring her back to their home state - and then with her other grandparents (who are estranged from their evil daughter) we hired attorneys and muddles through the Massachusetts probate court system..... and the grandparents were awarded permanent custody last winter. Her mother has not made one attempt to speak to her in a year, though she did make attempts to get money from my brother.
ANYWAY .........the bottom line is that my niece is celebrating her 15th birthday today! All things considered - she adjusted very well to life with people who love her and care about her emotional needs as well as physical. She played softball, went on dates, did OK enough in school for her grandparents to reward her with a trip to California this summer to visit with another family member there.
I just wanted to share this "happy ending" with my DIS family, and thank those of you who offered support and prayers last year
