Was wondering if anyone had had good luck with a stroller for an older/bigger child. I don't need it to be long lasting, just looking for something to use for our trip this next time. We'll be doing Disney, but also doing Sea World and maybe the zoo....not sure. But would like something that we can use for my DD when she gets tired and/or for keeping her somewhat contained. We still get the "carry me's". I imagine most of the time it will simply be for "stuff" more than anything else.
TIA!

fwell its certainly not cheap...the best 'inexpensive' one suitable for traveling (ie not too bulky, cumbersome, heavy) was the Maclaren Volo. It holds up to i believe 55lbs and it weighs about 8lbs, and has a carrying strap for over the shoulder carrying. I got it in canada for a list price of anywhere from $140-$160 , and i was able to get it on sale and used some gift certificates that I had to buy it, ended up paying about $80 for it, which i figure is fine compared to a stroller at the park for what, $10/day? over 7 days?

anyway thats my only suggestion. good luck!

We used a Cosco large umbrella stroller, without a canopy, that we got free with DD5's new booster seat at Toys R Us! Yes, it said it only went to 40 lbs. and not for her head to be above the top of the seat back (yeah, right) and she is 51 lbs. and 46 inches tall! :rotfl: It held up great for a night at Epcot and an evening at DTD. That's really the only times we needed it, but nothing buckled and nothing broke. I say go cheap, and if it breaks, I think they cost less than $15 even when they're not free!

We have a Combi Strolee for our 4 year old. It goes up to 45 lbs, partially reclines, has a canopy, folds up like an umbrella strollers and weighs only 11 lbs. It was $40.

My sister had a Jeep stroller that she really liked. It has rugged sturdy wheels, is easy to fold, has a sun cover. The only things it doesn't have is seat recline or a real basket to speak of. It comes with a little pouch that fits on the side, for small things. It is rated to 30 lbs., but she was well over that weight, and it still worked fine. I think she paid about $30-40 at Cosco's or Sam's Club - one of those type places.

My suggestion is also a Kolcraft umbrella stroller from Toys-R-Us or Babies-R-Us. We bought one last year when we left our 6-year old's Maclaren at home accidentally. My DD was over 40" and almost 50 lbs at the time. The Kolcraft was only $20 and worked fine. In fact, it steered better than many of the strollers I tried. It had a sun canopy and reclined a bit. We used it for 10 days with great success.

We brought our DD to the store and "test drove" a bunch of strollers. A lot of them (the Combi and the Jeep mentioned above) did not work for her as her legs were too long. We also liked the Maclaren Volo, but it was at least $80 more.

Why would you call out all your childrens problems / illness in you sig?

What difference does it make? Do you expect to be treated different because of this.

Not picking a fight...just curious.

I also am on board with the Combi Strolee STS-I got 2 for my 4 year old twins on ebay for around $35. They fold down to 12 inches and a big advantage is that my 6'4 husband can push them without having to hunch over for hours on end. Good quality too!

I second the Jeep stroller. We got ours at Toys r Us for about $40. It is very sturdy and comfortable to push to be an umbrella stroller. That is what we are taking with us for our 3 yo.

Everyone's sigy's explain who they are to some extent or another. That they're married, or have a life partner, or that they love Pooh or some other attribute. That's simply part of who my kids are. It influences pretty much every decision we make. I don't consider them to be "problems or illnesses".
In some respects, I do "expect" to be treated differently. From those who face similar circumstances, I anticipate that they will add their insight (such as, "I noticed in your signature that your son has ASD, just to let you know the fireworks are really loud there, here's another option.") and/or share their challenges/triumphs. I hope and anticipate (so I guess, yes "expect") that someone with a new diagnosis would feel free and comfortable asking me questions. So in that way I expect to be treated differently. And, sadly, to those who are ignorant of Autism spectrum and ADHD, I also expect to be criticized and forced to justify. Happily enough, the last expectation hasn't really been fulfilled.
I can tell you, in the years and years that I've belonged to various online boards you are the VERY FIRST person to question either my right or decision to share about my children in my sigy. On all the boards, my user name tends to be the same and with small variations, my sigy is the same. And, frankly when you say "do you expect to get treated different", disregarding the incorrect grammer, you do mean to "pick a fight." I have difficulty believing that you'd go up to someone IRL and ask them why in the world they had a bumper sticker about Autism support or a t-shirt that says "I'm deaf and I'm proud". And ask them if they were looking for attention.

zoemakes5, you go girl! There's a reason "certain people" are on my ignore list. I just got fed up getting mad at reading certain posts. I still can't believe you were questioned about your siggy... :sad2:

Go Zoemakes5. My DS4 is in the process of going thru the evaluation and they are suspectig Aspergers. It has been overwhelming to DH, DS17 and myself learning about this. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for people who have children/expericnce with this because I can find support, help, and advice.

As for Got Quatro - my mom always said if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all. It is none of your business why she has her siggy the way she does? Why do you use spanish in your name? I could make a lot of comments about that but I remember what my mom said. All you were really doing was :stir: on an issue you really don't care about.

You GO, girl! This line in your response is great... if an 'explanation' to the original question was even necessary which, imo, it wasn't.

Signed,

RIGHT ON!! Ignore the rude and inconsiderate comments made by anyone. God Bless you and your family.

We've had great luck with Kidco and Combi strollers. They aren't super inexpensive but have higher weight limits. The Kidco is actually a clone of the MacLaren at half the price, manufactured by the people who used to have the import license for MacLarens. We have the double actually and it has held up on 3 trips carrying our large 52 lb-plus 6 year old and 35 lb 3 year old just fine. I got mine on ebay.

We also have a single Combi that has worked wonderfully. It folds up very small which is nice. It's one step up from an umbrella in that it's more comfy, has a sunshade and can still hold our biggest kid. It was about $50-$60.

Good luck! Have a wonderful trip.

I posted a similar thread a couple of weeks ago. Someone suggested an Avalon stroller from Burlington Coat Factory's Baby Depot. I took DD (4, almost 5) to try it out and she was very comfy. She didn't want to get out. It costs $29.99 and it holds up to 45lbs. HTH

I was pretty surprised, too. To say the least! And, it's obvious it was just to make trouble. It's not as if he was responding to the actual question I posed! Oh, well.

What a childish, hateful thing to say - Was that really necessary? :confused3

Actually, it's German.

I just thought those thing woud be private.

Calm down folks.

Whoa, I'm sorry, but now I'm angry! I tried to be reasonable in my previous response. Took it as a "teachable moment" so to speak. But, you've crossed the line, as far as I'm concerned. What gives you the right to jump onto my thread asking a legitimate question having NOTHING to do with my children's disabilities, imposing yourself and offering nothing to the discussion, and then have the unending gall to criticize me for including information about my family in my signature?! :furious: When did YOU become the self-ordained sigy police?! Then, to come out and tell people to "calm down" whom you've offended, and put "I just thought those things would be private." What you really meant is "I think those things SHOULD be private", otherwise you'd have simply ignored it, since it was in no way germane to the discussion, nor was a question asked like "hey, should I include this in my siggy". AND you did it in a confrontational manner.
I'm proud of my children, who they are, what they've accomplished. I'm even more proud that they've done so when faced with some pretty tough hurdles, not the least of which are small minded individuals who are prejudiced against them. It's not something I'm embarrased about, not something I would "hide" or keep secret and private. And it offends me to no end that you think that I should do so! All you've accomplished is to make me want to go in and make my sigy bigger and the references to my kids "illnesses and problems" bigger....I wonder if I can add a sound tag line....hmmmm.
Note to others, make sure you don't have a picture of your child or loved one in a wheelchair, or walking with a cane, or doing sign language...who knows what kind of "special treatment" seeking you'll be accused of!
