I'm always amazed when I talk to or meet people from New York who don't have their own cars.

Here in the South, we have no public transportation system to speak of...even in larger cities you almost never see a bus. Cabs are unheard of. There are no trains.

I can't imagine having to depend on my city the way New Yorkers do.

It looks a lot like it did a couple years ago during the blackout. I hope it ends soon for you guys.

That's because Manhattan is a relatively small island and every single piece of it is at a premium. I would bet most people don't have cars because of the cost of parking.
I know it costs like $50 for a few hours whenever we drive in. I can't imagine having to pay what people pay in rent per month just to have a car.
If everyone had a car there wouldn't be room to drive it anyway. LOL

mrFDNY have you guys had any problems going on runs? I can't imagine driving a rig in that crap. Now all you guys need is for it to start snowing. Have fun.

You've hit the nail on the head - this is a major safety issue. I wouldn't want to have to call 911 during this. Response times are bad enough with normal traffic and people not pulling over to the side when they see the flashing lights.

oh my. thanks for sharing...and phew, am I glad I'm not in that mess!

this am response times were up 10 minutes,at around 6 am.at 7:30 am the city put in alert a phrase 2 emergency action plan.this means at 7:30 am 30 more fire trucks were in the city than normal.75 more EMS units across the city.and over 10,000 more police officers are on duty.response times are up around a minute to two right now.right now 75% of emergency service workers are on overtime(thats time and a half pay)84% of the fdny are on duty(i'm off :earboy2: actually i'm off because i have to work a double tommorrow on my day off, yay, what fun!)80% of the nypd are on duty and 89% of ems is on duty.my city of new york pager has been going off every 5 minutes with updates and changes to the plan.the biggest problem is now when emergency vechile's are rolling to a call, there is no where for other vechiles to pull too, there is no longer a right lane with the extreme increased traffic.so some rigs have been seen sitting in traffic, light's and sirens.

What a mess!

I send hugs to all who have to muddle through this mess.

how crazy!!!!! I was just up in NY a few weeks ago (because i love the place!) and it seemed a bit more crazy than usual...now it has hit legal insanity!

It's very expensive and can be very inconvenient to have a car in NYC.

Up here in the Bronx, we pay $170 (including 10.75% tax) monthly to garage our car. It's about TRIPLE that for monthly parking in the city (Manhattan) especially since the tax in the city is over 20%!!! So, monthly parking in a garage in the city (approx. $400-600) is more than rental housing in some other parts of the country.

And we haven't even added the costs of gas, maintenance, and INSURANCE to the costs of owning a car yet!

The only alternative to paid garage parking is on the street parking. Have you ever tried to find parking in NYC? Try doing that every day! Even if you find a good space, in most places, you have to move your car every day for the street sweepers to go through and go through the parking search again.

Even if you are lucky or unlucky enough to own a car, as many of the people in the suburbs do, you would never drive it to work. There are NO street parking in the business and financial districts. You would have to park it in a parking lot, assuming you can find one not FULL, at $18 + 20% tax for ONE hour!!! There is a max that they can charge per day and I think it is around $50-60?

We're too cheap to pay for parking in the city. So, when we go there on the weekends or off-peak, we usually add about an hour to the drive to try to find parking in the residential areas of Manhattan.

An interesting picture is one when a strike ends midday and EVERYONE is trying to get on the first train available.....then while packed in like sardines, the train hits the first major stop and half of the people are trying to get off and an equal amount is trying to get on....everyone extremely impatient. My son and I almost got crushed in a similar situation just last week when an unexpected halfday strike ended.

I've got about half a dozen friends who garage cars in NYC, it costs them in the $400-500 per month range depending on if it's in indoor or outdoor lot, and what part of town it's in.

Of course my former boss and her husband OWN the garage they park in on th upper East side about three blocks from Gracie Mansion... must be nice! :cool1: :cool1:

Wow, am I glad I live where I do. Parking is FREE. We dont have cabs, nor do we have buses, trains, etc. We have our own cars. Cost of living here is so less expensive. I really feel for you in NY. I would love to come and visit your town though. But I think I will stay put as far as living. LOL

HEY....quit your gloating! :rotfl: (just kidding)

Seriously though, I love NYC. I really miss being their on a daily basis....I worked their for 4 years and it was a wonderful time of my life....I still am fortunate to live close enough to get there as often as possible....but it still isn't the same as actually being there all the time. (plus, I was in great shape back then....from all the walking that I did!!!) I hate to see the city seem so "trapped" without the public transportation....I hope they settle the strike very soon. the city is usually unbearable with crowds at this time of year to begin with, I can't even imagine what it is like now with the strike.
Good thoughts being sent to all of the police, fire fighters, and EMS crews that I am sure will be on overtime trying to handle the crowds, etc.....

I would love to visit NY at Christmas time. I told my DD the other day when she got older I was going to take her there to go Christmas shopping. I have never been there, but have always wanted to.

I, too, feel sorry for all the emergency workers, police, firefighters, etc. that are having to deal with this. All of you stay safe!!!!!

Did anyone see Jay Leno last night? In his monologue he talked about the strike and asked who was enjoying watching this...he then showed a clip of some penguins watching it on a big screen- March of the New Yorkers. hehe, it was pretty funny. :teeth:
