A DISers Book Club!

Good Evening :)

I am a new book club member. Thanks Kevin for the mention on the latest podcast! :) Right now I am reading The Fiery Cross, the 5th Diane Gabaldon book in the Outlander series. I read the first 4 quite a while ago, but now that the 7th one is out, it's motivated me to 5 and 6, that have been sitting on nightstand!

Welcome!!!! :goodvibes

I've been wondering how to choose a book to read with my itouch kindle app. (Maybe someday I'll get a real Kindle, but this works for now) It is just so hard to choose. I'm currently reading The Demon Awakens on it that I got for free.

However, I think I figured out how to choose one to buy. The cheapskate in me doesn't want to buy a book that I could get in a used paperback. I think kindle is ideal for reading books that are only out in hardback. This way I'll get to read the latest book, not have to buy a hardback, and most importantly, I won't bonk my nose with a big giant book as I fall asleep reading it upside in bed. :rotfl:

I think I might get the new Vince Flynn book, Pursuit of Honor on my itouch. I like political thrillers and I like his books. I think it is my way of dealing with stressful current events. Anyway, I put that on my goodreads "to read" list. I'm a little odd in that I don't like "chick flicks" or romance or "women's" books. I like action, excitement, and sci-fi fantasy.

Hi everyone

Kevin reminded me that this thread existed,so I thought i'd pop in and get some ideas!

I have a big pile of books by my bed I need to get through which are: Down Under by Bill Bryson (although it might be called something else in the States.) After Pete going on about Australia, I thought I'd hear about it from one of my all time favourite travel writers. I love his books with a mix of interesting facts and lot of laughs!

I also have Disney Wars which was recommended to me by a friend, which I hope to get started soon.

I also have a book by Bryce Courtenay called The Potato Factory. I loved another one of his books I read called Jessica, so I am going to see how good this one is!

I also plan to fit in my once yearly reading of Katherine by Anya Seton. I love that book, I read it when I was 16, and have read it every year since. If you like historical romances, this is the way to go!

I am so glad this is a sticky because I don't do the boards very often but I always listen to the podcasts and wanted to come on here since Kevin first mentioned it. I have read all 23 pages of posts and have added quite a few books to my wish list. Thank you everyone!

I don't have a Kindle but might consider getting one if they ever figure out how to put in a "new book" smell ap. I usually have more than one book going at once because at work when I'm not listening to the Dis on my iPod, I listen to audiobooks from either audible.com or from the library. It is a little time consuming to download the CD's to my computer but it's worth it for all the free stuff I can add. I suppose having a job that you can do in your sleep has its perks, because I do enjoy listening to some great stuff. At home, I usually read before going to sleep so I have a good, old-fashioned book then.

What I have just listened to this week:
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult - I really did not like this book but I finished it because I'm like that. I just didn't like or care about any of the characters very much and I new what had actually happened right away so no big suspense.

Born Standing Up by Steve Martin - The audiobook was also read by Steve Martin. Not very long but interesting autobiography and he does have a chapter on the time he worked at Disneyland.

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown - I was a bit disappointed and I found it just so far-fetched but it did get me thinking of planning a trip to DC maybe instead of a trip to WDW:eek:

Next time I will post some of my favorites. Please visit my Shelfari page and add me as your friend (I need some :sad1:) This is also a great way to organize your reading and books. http://www.shelfari.com/lovescats

Hi Zuzu! I like to get book downloads from our library website too. That reminded me of a good one I listened to over the summer, but you can read it the old fashioned way too. I don't think I mentioned it here before.

Traffic: Why we drive the way we do is a very interesting book about driving patterns and even makes some references to the lines at Disney and FPs. Because, in a way, traffic is a little like a line. It also discusses why it is better to be a "late merger" when two lanes come together into one. Easy to read, I recommend this book. :thumbsup2

I've never been on Shelfari. It looks similar to the one I'm on- Good Reads. I only have one friend there :rotfl: but it is good for keeping track of the books I read and especially the ones I want to read. I would hear about a good book and then forget about it. Now I put it in my "to read" list.

New member here (but not knew to the Dis site). Just noticed this thread on the WDWInfo page. I thought I'd join up since I read between 30 and 50 books per year; split between nf and fiction.
Wishspirit: I read Disneywars a few years ago. It's an excellent book, reads very well and you can see just how much Eisner did for WDW.
I agree with the opinions on The Lost Symbol. Good read but the ending was a little weak (even if he 'telegraphed' it with his references to Noetic science).
I'm currently reading The Last Founding Father. It's a biography of James Monroe. Very good read if you like to read about the early years of the U.S.
In the non-fiction category, I tend mostly to biographies and science books dealing mostly with Quantim Mechanics (a little bit 'above' the lay person's version but definitely below the phd in physics type books).

The Shack... next I will read the Lost Symbol.
I am a kindle gal!

Recently finished:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - I was much more into this book than I thought I would be. I really enjoyed the mystery/suspense and found the setting and characters interesting. The ending was just okay for me, but I tend to feel that way about all but my most favorite stories. But I recommend this and I'll be adding his next book to my requests at the library.
A Thousand Splendid Suns - LOVED this book. The story is heart-wrenching, but not a downer. This book gives an amazing view at what life has been like for women in Afghanistan over the past 40 years or so - better than a nonfiction book would do, I think. I highly recommend it.

Currently reading:
World Without End - This book was surprisingly easy to get into - kind of hits the ground running. I'm enjoying it, but will need to find more time to finish it before it's due back at the library.

Unfortunately I have tons of books sitting here looking at me and it seems no time to read lately :guilty: Hope to get some free time this weekend, once my ADR's are made and I can quit stressing!

Love this thread :thumbsup2

I love Sookie too! Haven't watched the series though. A little scared to ~ don't want to be disappointed.

I'm currently on book 7 of the sookie series. i'm addicted now. i started out watching the show and now the season's over. my sister in law bought me the whole series of books for my bd in aug. so i'm reading up a storm. before sookie i read my fav book wuthering heights. i tried to read pride and prejudice but can get past the first couple chapters. i guess after a watch the movie and the book is so much like the movie it gets a bit boring for me. i loved p&p with keira knightly & matthew macfadyen. i love the twilight series. other authors i like are patricia cornwell, mary higgens clark & dean koontz oh and i read bones to ashes by kathy reichs.

can you tell i usually read books because of something i've watched on tv or seen at the movies.

does anyone know of a good reputibale place to read books online that aren't to expensive. i saw one place online and they charged 7.99, i can but the book cheaper at walmart for that.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone here that recommended Christopher Moore. What a thrill to find a new author to devour! I started listened to the audio book of A Dirty Job last night at work and I love it! It was LOL funny due to some incredible characters and dialogue. Love the twisted, black humor. It also takes place in San Francisco (my favorite city in the world) so it's fun to make the rounds with the characters. The audio book is read by Fisher Stevens and he does a great job. I have already requested all the other Christopher Moore books from my library and I can't wait to go through them.
:laughing::rotfl2::yay::laughing::rotfl::lmao:

I have finally started reading The Memory Keeper's Daughter, and it is wonderful so far!

I'm also reading A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller. Since my last post, I've decided to bite the bullet and buy it at full price, and it is incredible! It's about making a good story for yourself, and how he learned that while editing a movie based on his successful book Blue Like Jazz. He comes from a Christian perspective, but even non-Christians will love it. It challenges me to the core of my humanity, not just my faith. It also shows how even amazing successful authors and post-evangelical icons can feel deep insecurity.

I am currently reading: Desperation by S. King. I haven't read one of his books since he wrote the Gunslinger series. I just stopped liking his style. Anyway, I picked this up, and am quite surprised I am liking it.

I am also listening to Janet Evanovich's, Finger Lick'en Fifteen. I use audiobooks and podcasts during my walking time.

If you listen to audiobooks, OMGosh, you need to listen to the Bloody Jack Series by L.A. Meyer. The reader is Katherine Kellgren, and she reads so amazingly!! My husband recommend this series. Not my top of book at all, but OMGosh, I loved these!

Oh and Thanks, PinkBudgie: I just reserved a copy of: Traffic, Why we Drive Like We Do. Sounds interesting, and well, hey, I am California/Los Angeles driver! Quick, duck.. someone's shooting at me :). Wait, no, it was just a rock being tossed from an overpass :) . Thankfully, I haven't experienced any of this yet :).

I just finished Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris. It really wasn't all that interesting and the main character was off-putting.
Now I'm off to read this board to decide what to get from the library next!

Hi

I started 'A crack in forever' yesterday and finished it last night. A wonderful love story....I cried...it does get sad.

Also this is a web site I use it is a literature Map, you put the name of a author in it and it comes up with other authors that are similiar:
http://www.literature-map.com/

I hope this is useful to some people.

I am just finishing up listening to A Dirty Job, read it before but SO funny I had to listen again! I really love Fisher Stevens reading! You have got to listen to Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck back to back. Just make sure Bloodsucking Fiends is first!

If you like Christopher Moore check out Carl Hiaasen. Doesn't have the supernatural aspect Moore has, but same twisted humor. There are a couple of characters he has that show up in numerous books.
