Is there any way to get a discount at a chain hotel like Country Inns, Hampton Inn, or such? I was thinking about staying over a night in Valdosta, Ga on our way next year and any discount codes on Orbitz and such won't apply to those hotels.

I was hoping to get a night for $100 or less, but with one of my kids turning 18 it doesn't look to promising. They have the non-refundable rates, but I am not going that route.

If you join the rewards clubs of the various chains, they may offer you discounts. If you stay often enough you can earn points for free nights. Membership in AARP and AAA can yield discounts. Reserving ahead of time or using coupons found at welcome centers (and sometimes online) can yield savings as well.

This. As soon as you enter Georgia (I'm assuming you'll be entering from just south of Chattanooga), drop into the Georgia Welcome Center and pick up their motel coupon books (there are usually two or three). About an hour south of Macon, start calling the motels you're interested in to make sure they have a room. Assuming three adults and one child, you'll easily get a room for less than $100/night. And assuming three adults and two children, you should get a room for about $100/night. Good luck.

Try priceline! We got a Country Inn and Suites in southern GA for $60 plus tax.

We've stayed at Country Inn and Suites frequently over the last year. I joined their rewards club (it was free) and I get emails often with a 30% off discount code. The only catch is that the promotion is often 'book now for travel within 30 days' or something like that. Not always, but often. I have had success booking a room far in advance and then applying a discount code later by calling their customer service line and asking nicely. Just make sure to book one of the rates that can be adjusted/canceled up to 24 or 48 hours before you travel. :goodvibes

I honestly think I earned free nights faster with Best Western's reward programs, but my extended family is super picky about which hotels they sleep in and so it's been CI & S when we travel with them.

We go down to about Valdosta or the state line every time we go to Florida. (We usually leave after morning church service on Sunday since DH is a pastor.) I use my phone to get on Hotwire and find a cheap room for the night. I always look for at least a 2 1/2 or 3 star hotel, and usually get one for between $50-$70 a night. You won't know the name of the hotel until you book if you want the best price, but we've never had a bad experience.

The very best way to get a deal in Valdosta is to call the hotel direct. For instance, if you call the Holiday Inn in Valdosta, 229-244-1111, the front desk agent or sales manager can give you the best possible rates...even better than going online.

We stayed at a Best Western in Valdosta in January & it was a great hotel. It appeared to be newer.

Best Western has a rewards program, too.
