A Croc For All Seasons - It's done! Epilogue, p. 52

May I chime in? For us, taking the extra stroller for DD5 is absolutely essential. She's a little thing and I don't want to completely tire her out. Keep in mind the heat will take alot of energy from them, as well. Also, the reason we didn't rent one is b/c the rentals are made of hard plastic and I wanted her to be comfy. I also found the stroller very helpful at the airport, as we piled all our carry-ons on it and DD walked.

You know what you could do is buy 2 little umbrella strollers at Walmart for $10 each and then buy the attachments that keep them together. Should one parent want to run ahead with 1 child you could separate the strollers at that point. I was really torn last year what to do, since DD was 4 and DS was 2. Having 2 strollers was perfect and we're gonna do the same thing this year.
HTH! :goodvibes

Of COURSE you can chime in! I'd forgotten about those little attachment things. Thanks! I NEVER used umbrellas, since my DH is a pilot and I often had no choice but to push on alone, so all we ever had was a Graco double (front to back, not side to side...) But, I've seen those things that hook umbrellas together. Good suggestion, thanks! :goodvibes

My vote is for renting the double. Our girls have not used strollers since 2003, except at WDW. The only way we cover as much ground as we do is the stroller.

Now while renting instead of buying can be a tough nut to swallow here is my reasoning

1. As stated above girls do not stroller anywhere but WDW, I do not need the hassle of stroller through airports.

2. Do not need hassle of stroller on/off Disney transportation.

3. While there are "cheap" strollers out there.....you get what you pay for , with a Disney rental if it is not right, you just swap it out for another and keep moving.

4. It is wonderful to not be tied to the stroller. Example you are in Toon Town and decide the day is done....wouldn't it be fun to avoid the heat/crowds/or rain! and hop the train to the Main Street entrance....well then you just do it! ( no other strollers allowed on the train).

5. Part of the package.....yes I bring my own rain ponchos from Walmart, pack lots of snacks/breakfast bars have Tinkerbell visit the room instead of buying souveniers everyday....that said for the reasons listed above I view the charge of the stroller rental as an enhanced park hopper fee and move onto complete WDW freedom!

Have fun on your trip....this is a great time of year to go!!

Now....on with the show please Princess V!!!

I always rent one for Michael - he'll tire right out after all that walking and even he enjoys the stroller more. This trip I may even rent a double to give him more "elbow room" and to have room to dump my "stuff"!

DS (3.5) doesn't use a stroller anymore, except when we are Disney. In the morning or when we first get to a park he walks, but when waiting for parades or at night when we are leaving he will sit in it for the walk to the monorail, bus, etc. We also bought one of those $10.00 Wal-mart umbrella strollers and last year on the lat day of our 14 day trip the tire kept falling off. At that point we didn't care becasue we just threw it out when we were leaving. It was the best $10.00 investment:thumbsup2

I ditto DLM and may I add that you also could bring one and let them take turns. You will know your boys abilities to keep up. We had our DS 5 in our double about 50% of the time, the other 50% he really WANTED to walk. I made him sit in large crowds or when we were bee-lining it through crowds....since he is turtle-slow.

Hi again, V & Gang!

I think I posed this question on a "park strategy" thread a few months back, but with a bunch of moms of the pre-k/K set reading this trip report, I thought I might get a better, experienced answer! I have twin boys who just turned 5 about two weeks ago.

I noticed in those early day 1 pictures that Leo was not in a stroller. Did you lose it for this trip?

I am really struggling with that question. My boys have not used a stroller anywhere since they were 3-ish - I threw our one and only (double Graco) away because it got mildewy in our garage after sitting through 2 winters... The double strollers for rent seem big and bulky, but I won't pay to rent two singles, and so then don't know if I should invest and have to drag on an airplane some cheapo umbrella ones rather than deal with the doubles. If I do that, then I am kind of out of luck if we want to send one adult ahead for FP's or something...

I have a friend, also with twins, who went last Jan. for the MLK weekend, and even at 4, the girls walked the whole time, but I don't know how ambitious they were about getting a lot of places. My preschool mom friend who just got back Saturday from 10 days at the BC, and has an only child, says that they wouldn't even dream of going without a stroller, especially at Epcot, which is her DD's favorite park.

Opinions? We are not coddlers and more or less tell the kids to "suck it up" at the zoo and so forth, but I don't want everyone to be miserable. I also think about the storage in the stroller as a possible side benefit... ;) Should we try the first two days at MK without, but maybe just rent one at Epcot, where the strollers might not be so much of a hassle? Am I delusional and we will need one every day? I know many of you have to fly, so is it worth buying the cheap umbrella type and taking it on the plane, rather than renting??? Ack!

I am under 2 weeks, now, and feel that I need to figure this out ahead of time, to ensure ease once we are there!

I hope all you moms had a wonderful Mother's Day, and I say thanks in advance for any help! V, I'm sorry to try to hijack your thread! I have a pre-trip, but don't know of any moms of 5's who are reading it right now, so posting there isn't much of a help! :)

We were just there 2 weeks ago. DS4 will be 5 in June. I went to BRU and got a $30 babytrend stroller for him, and took along my good Mcclaren for DS1. DS4 hasnt been in a stroller since about 3 1/2. He didnt use it as much as I thought he would BUT HE DID USE IT ALOT. It was 90 degrees everyday and the heat quickly got to him. He is also a slow poke so getting from one side of the park to the other was much easier, not to mention when trying to get to that ADR we were running late for. If you stay for the parade or fireworks at nite it was a blessing as well.it got very crowded and he was tired and it was nice to know he was in the stroller in those huge crowds departing the parks heading up that looooong incline to the monorail(some nites I wasnt sure I was going to make it).
Anyway I also agree with DLMAMA that it was great at the apt when DS4 would walk and we could pile stuff in it.
We are going back in Oct and are doing the same thing again.
Have fun and good luck.

V, you have such a captive audience!

I think I'll start the chant!

V....V....V....V...V...V...V...V..V..V..V..V..V.V.V.V!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yay: :yay: :yay:

3. While there are "cheap" strollers out there.....you get what you pay for , with a Disney rental if it is not right, you just swap it out for another and keep moving.
Actually, I was quite surprised at what I got for $15 at BRU. It was a Kolcraft stroller with a detachable sun shade. It held up great, in fact we will use it again this year, as it's in perfect condition. :thumbsup2

4. It is wonderful to not be tied to the stroller. Example you are in Toon Town and decide the day is done....wouldn't it be fun to avoid the heat/crowds/or rain! and hop the train to the Main Street entrance....well then you just do it! ( no other strollers allowed on the train).

Actually that's not so. We took our strollers on the train with no problem. I do know that the stroller must fold, but we were never told no strollers allowed on the train. :confused3

Hi :wave2:

I've really enjoyed the morning of day 1 of your TR!
Thank you!
Hi V checkin in tonight....how's things????
Good, good - next installment should be up at lunch time...

No problem! We didn't use the stroller all of the time, but definitely still need it in EP and when Leo's just plain pooped out. And. For when he's moving slow as molasses and I want to be somwhere quickly! At the MK, I can park in one land, do those attractions, then put him back in for the trek to another land. I used it every evneing, after he was beat form the day but still needed to get around resorts for dinner. I presonally hate the rentals, but I'm pretty small and they're pretty tough to maneuver.
Re: storage... it may be YEARS before I give up the stroller, just for ease of transporting stuff!
Re: MK train - as long as it folds, strollers may be brought on.:thumbsup2

:headache: D'oh! I jumped over here all willy nilly, hoping for an update!! :lmao: Carp! Let's see.... lunch eh? Your lunch is within the hour, right? Ok, I'll go and hit the treadmill and ....

...like my Govenor..... I'll be back!!:cool2: :lmao:

Thanks for the help, everyone. I just got back from my all-twin playgroup, and the mom with the girls who went last year did say they were very slow, but wanted to walk. Another mom went last Sept. (I just hadn't remembered to ask her before) and she rented a double for the twins who were 4 and a single for DS2, and said they only used them about half the time, and she was mad that they'd paid that much in the rentals. I think I'll check out BRU and see about one and sharing, or two with the attachment. I still am not excited about having them at the airports, but I'm also kind of cheap! :)

Thanks again, V, for letting me hijack! :goodvibes

Day One continued

Following our oh-so-yummy lunch, we made to depart the MK and check out our home for the night – Animal Kingdom Lodge.

That’s right. Only half a day at the MK. No, I’m not necessarily “kindler”, nor yet am I “gentler” – I just have a keen interest in keeping the peace. And half a day at MK, followed by half a day swimming and looking at animals, keeps Leo and Gramma happy, thereby making V happy. See how nicely that works out? :cool1:

So we took the bus back and went straight to the car for our overnight bags.

Why oh why didn’t I valet park and/or use bell services?

Because I’m cheap. And.

I honestly had no idea how much STUFF we’d have to haul. Across the parking lot. Through the portico. Around the lobby. Up the elevator. And ¾ of the way down Giraffe Trail.

Just how much stuff was there?! I don’t really recall. Maybe I blocked it from my memory. But I do know this. One of the bags, (which may or may not have been V’s, TFI), contained an 8lb dumbbell.

I’ll say that again: an 8lb dumbbell.

For strength training.

At Disney. :scared1:

Uh-huh.

I strength-trained that baby all the way into and out of the AKL, into CSR the next day, and never touched it again till we left. :rotfl2:

Which might have something to do with the 5 pounds I gained this trip. Ulp.

Anyway, we found our room and got changed into swimsuits right quick. It was a nice warm day and we were ready to get some swimming on!

Remember Leo, the boy who sinks like a stone? He got one of these:
490227699_7028c7a383.jpg

For to keep him afloat.

He also got one of these:
490202394_0abf663b20.jpg

A little non-alcoholic green apple slush to quench his thirst.
Notice, also, that the life-vest is gone. The boy likes his Nemos.

Gramma and Leo got right in and splashed around while Felicia and I settled down with a frosty Pina Colava and some light reading.

Drink Report 1
Do not, I repeat…. DO NOT bother with this lame-o drink! Or, at least ask for some ALCOHOL if you decide to give it a try. ‘Cause mine had none. Zero. Zip. Nada. Despite the description, which included the word “rum”. And V’s vacation doesn’t really start till I’ve had that first adult beverage.

Pool Report 1
A while back, Disneyland_Mama and I had a discussion about the AKL pool. Her husband was nervous about the look of the water and I totally understood where he was coming from.

Guess what DLM? It looks the same in person. Yeah, I knew it was some of Orlando’s best, loaded down with additional chemicals to keep us all squeaky-clean. But I felt like a hippo might rise up out of the murky depths at any moment. The large guy in a Speedo next to us may have added to the ambience. :scared:

All told, it was a fun pool. Leo did take a turn on the slide. Just once. That was enough for him. And. So did I. Just once. Too slow for moi.

We dried off on the sidelines before heading back upstairs to clean up and dress for dinner at….

Boma!

We ate at Boma first this past December, after reading many, many glowing reviews on the DIS. We were not disappointed.

But I’m always leery of re-visiting a place that’s been really good to us. They just never seem to measure up the second time around.

I’m happy to report that was NOT the case with Boma!

Dining Review 2
The first thing that went well this time was our ADR time – 5:30pm. Last time, we were seated when the place opened – along with every other table in the joint. Which meant that we were all on the same buffet cycle and humongous lines developed.

Not so at 5:30. By the time we were ready to feast, everyone was pretty well staggered and I never had more than 2 people ahead of me at any pod.

Everything was delicious – just as delicious as the first time!
Round 1: Prime Rib, a saffron rice dish, black-eyed peas (no, Fergie was not in the house), some kind of pan bread, Potatoes with Afritude, and Bobotie. Behind that is the most amazing soup ever – and I can’t remember what it was! Butternut squash? Pumpkin? Anyway, it was curried and creamed and it was so RICH. A couple spoonfuls was plenty.

And, you’ll notice, my vacation finally began properly… with a Safaritini. Or was it Afripolitan? Who cares – it had vodka, cranberry and just the right splash of triple sec. I was on vacation at last!!!

On to Round 2:
Salmon, couscous, Fufu, roasted vegetables, and falafel.

Sidenote: A long time ago, I was a Deadhead. The real deal; I spent a summer of college following the Grateful Dead around the country on their summer tour. It was during that summer that I became addicted to falafels. See, Deadheads got to the parking lot of a show early in the morning and hung out there all day till the concert started. People had to eat, right? And a lucrative little food-on-the-go industry popped up in each parking lot. Now, there aren’t too many things you can make that fit the criteria of fast & easy preparation; vegetarian; non-perishable ingredients; and cheap. Falafels fit the bill on all accounts! Just add water to the mix, shape the paste into little balls, fry ‘em up on a camp stove, and load ‘em into a pita with lettuce and tomato. And. They’re mighty tasty. Not just in a parking lot, either, TFI. After my first try of the wonder and beauty that is a falafel, I was forever hooked. I’m guessing I ate about 40 pounds’ worth that summer. Give or take an ounce.:rolleyes1

Funny, looking at the pics, it doesn’t seem like that much food. But I was approaching full and wanted to save room for everyone’s favorite….

Bread Pudding!!!

What – were you expecting something else?

Oh, all right, and ZEBRA DOMES, too. Not my fave, but a very close second.;)

Boma, once again, received a standing ovation from Gramma and me. Leo also enjoyed his spaghetti & meatballs and chicken tenders, so I’ll give a thumb’s up from him too.

We all left feeling rather like lions stuffed to the ears with wildebeest and set out to check out the wildlife, without looking at them as potential food.

We saw this guy:
490228415_2947eee731.jpg

And this one, too:
490228329_dd2bc36205.jpg

And this terror-inducing reptile:
490202556_0bc71cc0c1.jpg

Heh, heh, heh.

I also took some time – as I’d promised myself – to take some quality resort shots:

490227949_0848b1ebf2.jpg

And Leo settled in for a nice chat with one of the CM animal experts. I’m proud to say he wowed the nice lady with his knowledge of African fauna!
490228355_d0e11b56f1.jpg

Sidenote: When Leo started Pre-K last fall, they were studying about the Arctic. During circle-time, the kids were asked to name Arctic animals. The teacher said she heard the expected “Polar bears”, “penguins” and “seals”. But Leo… Leo busted out with “Caribou”. That’s my kid!

Okay, after a quick romp around the playground for Leo, we all headed back to our room. I had hoped to sneak back down to Victoria Falls lounge for a little reading and a night-cap, but I was too darned tired. Maybe next time.

We needed our beauty sleep, because the next day holds some BIG excitement!

Next: Meetings, meetings and more meetings!

Great first day, V! Glad Boma was everything you had come to expect it would be! YUM-O as Rachael Ray would say! The food looks delish!

So glad to hear Boma is still great. DH and I are eating there in two weeks. Just the two of us (we are leaving our 2 ds's with the rest of our group of 14).

Too bad about the pina colava. It looks really good. I hate it when I get fufu drinks and they don't have any alcohol. I get tipsy on 1 drink so I can tell when the alcohol is missing.

Wow...AKL looks sooo bee-u-tiful!
Little Leo is just a doll with his Nemo swimmies!:goodvibes

Thank you for the update! I am really looking forward to more!:yay: popcorn::

Hooray! I've been waiting, and I'm not so good at waiting.

I love the photos, especially the flowers. BE-U-Tiful. And Leo, of course, is as cute as can be.

I had dinner at Boma last year for my birthday. LOVE that place. I did my time as a Dead fan, too. I'm not sure how one goes from the punk scene to a stint with the Dead, but I'm guity, too. :hippie: It sounds like our musical history is very similar. I was cured by working a Dead show one summer. I was able to see just how silly the crowd looked, and I was done. Finished. Over.

But I do still like a falafel!

Great installment!

The AKL looks beautiful. I can't wait to eat at Boma and explore the AKL in Sept.
I am glad that you have included the food reviews in your TR. Thank you for sharing.

That’s right. Only half a day at the MK. No, I’m not necessarily “kindler”, nor yet am I “gentler” – I just have a keen interest in keeping the peace.
Thank God you haven't caught "it"!

One of the bags, (which may or may not have been V’s, TFI), contained an 8lb dumbbell.
I’ll say that again: an 8lb dumbbell.

At Disney. :scared1:
Uh-huh.
What?!?! :rotfl2:

:crazy2: Hope you didn't lose your lunch!!! :lmao:

Water looks good. You can see Leo's feet, which is one of the things we wondered about the water.

I’m happy to report that was NOT the case with Boma!
Whoo Hoo!!! I can't wait for BOMA!! :woohoo:

And, you’ll notice, my vacation finally began properly… with a Safaritini. Or was it Afripolitan? Who cares – it had vodka, cranberry and just the right splash of triple sec. I was on vacation at last!!!

Note to self: Order a Safaritini or an Afripolitan. :thumbsup2

On to Round 2:
490228135_426417c4c7.jpg

Salmon, couscous, Fufu, roasted vegetables, and falafel.

Oh, yo makin' my mouth watta!!!! :teeth:

Oh, all right, and ZEBRA DOMES, too. Not my fave, but a very close second.;)
Not my fave, either... highly overrated, IMO. I ate like 30 of those things and couldn't catch a buzz! :sad2:

Boma, once again, received a standing ovation from Gramma and me. Leo also enjoyed his spaghetti & meatballs and chicken tenders, so I’ll give a thumb’s up from him too.

Good to know for the mini monsters in my party. ;)

And Leo settled in for a nice chat with one of the CM animal experts. I’m proud to say he wowed the nice lady with his knowledge of African fauna!
490228355_58857ee7d2.jpg
Right on, Leo! :goodvibes

It had to be the butternut squash soup! We still talk about that yummy soup and fear the day we go back to Boma and its a different cycle of food and we don't get it again! LOL! It was almost liek dessert it was so yummy...ok i'll stop salivating now!!!!! I def plan to give Boma another try tho! How was staying at AKL? I think we are going to try and spend 2 nights at the end of our trip there...but thats a trip to plan at a later date. Anywho...great installment. :thumbsup2

I loved the pics of your 'tini...I mean food...keep it comin'!
