Day 13 Thursday 28th December 2006

I had been looking forward to today, A friend from uni was coming to see us in the villa with her 2 children. Unfortunately her DH was at work so we didn’t meet him. We had last seen Louise at our Graduation Ball in the autumn of 1988, Steve and I were BF/GF nearly 20 years ago, and it was as if we had seen each other last week. Louise and I both did Business Studies, but she took off on a globe trotting career, ended up in Florida and met and married her DH and is settled there (Apopka area) permanently. She has even retrained and is now a teacher, no more international jet setting!! Her two children were lovely and after the shyness they were in the pool with Sally allowing Louise and I talking time in the hot tub. Steve had gone off for a round of golf, with Kate driving the buggy.

After the golf party returned we all went out for a lovely lunch at TGI Fridays again. Cobb Salad is highly recommended here. After lots more talking we parted around 2.30pm and we drove up to MGM.

Compared to MK on Boxing Day it was heaving. Magic Kingdom was already shut to new entrants, and we later found out AK had been closed too. Steve did not want to stay, there was nothing we could go on without silly queuing, we fought our way down to ToT and RnR but all the FPs were gone. However, I put my foot down and said we were staying as otherwise we would miss out on Fantasmic. The idea was to go to the last showing at 10pm so that we could ride rides whilst the earlier two showings were on.

The only attractions we managed were Sounds Dangerous, One Man’s Dream and Narnia (if you can call that an attraction, very disappointed as there was a pre show but that was the attraction!)

I was dragging them all down to see Osborne Lights now it was dark, they thought they were fighting to see a few fairy lights but I’m glad to say we were all very impressed. The 15 minute rotating toons with coordinating light shows are unmissable. Kitted out with beer and a margarita with glow cube our spirits lifted. Fortunately it was possible to enjoy it all even with wall to wall people, no way could we walk the length.

We took ages to cross the park again, hoping that the queues for ToT (wanted to go in the dark) had decreased whilst the first Fantasmic was on, but we never got there, snarled up in the 8.30pm Fantasmic queue at 7.15, Against my better judgement (Steve would have gone home otherwise) we waited for a very claustrophobic 30 minutes but after that we moved and the time went quite quickly. As a reward we had great seats in the central section near the back. Fortunately the weather again was favouring us and it was fine (but cold) Fantasmic was stunning, much much better than 5 years ago. We came out and had one last go at ToT but the commando instincts in me knew it would still be bad, you need to be in the queue 10 minutes before chucking out time, not as everyone surges out with the same idea! Although a 50 minute wait time was posted we didn’t move in 5 minutes and abandoned the queue, and missed our night time ride of terror, a shame. The 10pm queue was far less manic and my original plan would have been far more successful and I am sure we could have ridden for a 30 minute wait if only they had cooperated. I have lost control of the troops/rabble!

Today we found the crowded conditions we had been dreading this week, and were so glad we had done so well on Boxing Day!! Back home via Burger King at 10pm (grim for me, hate BK, McDs etc!) At least meeting Louise and seeing Fantasmic had made the day memorable for the right reasons, the crowds for the wrong ones!!

Tomorrow: Golf, Pioneer Museum and Outback Steakhouse

Day 14 Fri 29th Dec Golf, Pioneer Museum and Outback Steakhouse

Shame about the crowds Fiona - but what fun meeting up with your old friend.

How great to meet up with an old friend, shame about the crowds, I'd love to see those lights!

Sounds like a lovely time with your old friends. Sorry to hear the MGM crowds were so bad, but it sounds like Fantasmic made up for it. I would love to see the Osborne family lights too.

Laur's princess:

The crowds (and probably flight prices) are the reason we will probably not ever be going at Christmas. But the lighs look so lovely that maybe I can persuade Mark we must go for my 50th Birthday (mid December) in 6 years time.

Thank you for these great reports
