Our A/C started acting up this evening. The outside fan is working but the line into the house wall has a thick layer of ice. The inside fan which is downstairs won't stay on and there is hardly any air flow.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Ours in our old house has frozen up before. We had to give it time to thaw and then it was fine.

We just had to get this one in our "new" house fixed. It needed a new compressor cap. I'm not sure how much it cost because we only had to pay a $50 deductible with our home warranty.

Ours acted up this year and we had it checked out by an AC guy and he said we just needed to change our filter. He said to buy the real cheap filters and change them once a month. Hope this helps.

We have an hvac business. Simple steps to try at home - first turn it off and let it thaw. Then check all of your filters. Next check your outside unit. Is it covered in leaves, dust, debris. If it's in good shape you could also try hosing it off to clean it. If these steps don't work you will need to call somebody. Your outside coil could need a professional cleaning (they use harsh cleaners) or you could be low on refrigerant. If it's low on refrigerant they may want to do a leak check and replace the point where it is leaking.

All you should have to do to fix it is hire someone to fix it, if that doesn't work, then you should consider getting a new air conditioner.

would it be bad to pour warm water on the iced part to help it thaw faster?

I know its my birthday and its so cold I had to party inside. No water balloons, no activities. Ive been inside all dang day. On another note, It was cold enough to snuggle in bed all day long. 15 hours of sleep :)

We had this problem last year and it turned out that we had a leak. HVAC company fixed the leak and added more coolant.

Our a/c wasn't working last week. We checked everything. There was not any ice on the tubes outside. DH finally figured out that the programmable thermostat needed a new battery. I would never have thought of that.

Only two causes for the symptoms you describe... Lack of airflow through the evaporator(indoor coil), or low charge in system. Usually, though certainly not always, a problem that happens to occur suddenly..."It was working fine yesterday" etc... is electrical in nature.

From your description, you mentioned that the indoor fan will not run. If true, that is most certainly the cause of the problem. No indoor blower equals no airflow. Could be the motor itself, the capacitor, or the control circuit for the blower. Not many options for troubleshooting exist for the average homeowner where this is concerned. Time to call the pros.

Well we shut it down last night and let it thaw out - there was some ice built up on the downstairs unit along with the pipe leading to the outside unit. We also changed out the filter which was overdue.

Hubby cranked it back up this morning and says it seems to be working fine, he's going to hang out at home for a few hours to see how it does. I'm just hoping it holds out for a few more weeks until the weather cools down. The only thing I'm worried about is the dog stays inside while we are at work - I'm a little worried it will quit working while we are at work. I guess I'll be using my lunch hours to drive home to make sure everything is ok for the next few days.
