Has anyone heard about this?

A 9 year old girl in Brazil was pregnant with twins after her stepfather raped her. In Brazil, abortion is illegal except in cases of rape and when it affects the mother's health.
In this case, the girl was both raped and in danger - her hips were too immature to give birth.

Now the Catholic Church has excommunicated her, her family, and the doctors involved with the abortion. They were all Catholic.

Thoughts?

She's only 9 years old!! I can't even imagine what that might feel like to that little girl.

That makes me so mad the the catholic church excommunicated her and the family. What a shame.

So very un-Christ like. :sad2:

The Catholic church strikes again.

She's a BABY! Did they really think she could handle it?

It's a shame the Church made that decision but it's not surprising at all: they went against Church teachings and this is Latin American clurgy we're talking about.

The Catholic church strikes again.

im horrified. at the church and her stepfather

i can believe the stepfather, but the mother and little girl?!?!?!? thats crazy

Yeah, not so surprised. She got an abortion, the church forbids it, so they kicked her out. My experience with the catholic church has always been very black & white. They see no gray area.

Personally, I think it's absolutely horrible. Hopefully they'll find a way to practice their religion without the church. God sees forgiveness, even if the church doesn't.

Normally I'm against abortion, but in this case I can see it was the right thing to do.It's amazing what the Roman Catholic Church will do sometimes. They are way to judgemental which is un-Christlike.

I'm sorry. The Catholic church has done a lot of things that I think are awful. This is one of those things.

What did they expect that poor girl to do? Have a baby at NINE?

This is how I feel too. She is nine!

Would they still have let her in, because she had sex before marriage, even if she didn't want to?

I don't know. What I want to know is how did the church find out about the girl's abortion? A church should be a loving and supportive community to fall back on in times of crisis, not a place that kicks you out when you didn't do anything wrong. I don't believe it was wrong to abort the baby, having it would have put both her and the baby's life at risk. She didn't make a choice to have sex, she was raped. I'm generally opposed to abortion because you choose to have sex and you are generally an adult but in this case the poor little girl had no choice.

Well, the bible says if your raped is doesn't count because it wasn't your choice.
I don't know how the catholic church would act towards that though.

I was raised in the Catholic Church for part of my childhood. The stance from my church was that abortions are only acceptable when the mother's health and wellbeing is in danger. They would rather lose one life (in this case 2) that two (in this case 3).

It truly shows that the Catholic Church picks and chooses among their locations. It angers me to be frank.

:sad2:

Sick. Sick, sick, sick.

First of all, the stepfather is a *insert bad name here* for even doing that to a child.

Second of all, the CHURCH is just plain stupid.

"Oh, abortion is wrong. Let's excommunicate the whole dang family when the girl was NINE YEARS OLD and was RAPED. Yay!"

That poor, poor girl, and her family! I hope they can keep their faith without going into a church.

I'm 150% against abortion.

But in this case, omg poor girl.
It is one of the rare cases where I support an abortion.

And shame on the church for doing this. I am a Roman Catholic and I am dissapointed in them.

The poor girl! And shame on the Church!

Coincidentally, I used to be friends with somebody who was excommunicated. She was 7 and accidentally bumped into a candle at a Christmas recital and caught the priest on fire. Another stupid reason to excommunicate somebody.
