9/27/14, Returning to the Southern Caribbean

Happy New Years to everyone!!

Stay safe tonight. Please don't drink and drive and watch out for those who do.

We will stay home and maybe watch a movie. I rarely can stay awake until midnight anymore, unless we are on the ship, then as long as I am active I can make it that late. I am up by 5 a.m. 7 days a week so I am usually in bed early compared to most people.

Cool drizzly day here in Central Florida today.

The theme parks are over flowing with people. After this weekend it will quiet down so we can start going back and enjoy the parks.

Have a great New years Eve everyone.:goodvibes

We are sailing with 3 of our four kids- a then 9 yr old girl, 6 yr old boy, and almost 4 yr old girl.

I would love to find other dis folks on the cruise with kids ( especially a 9 yr old girl) that would like to chat ahead of time so the kids know someone on the cruise!

Sorry no kids with us this time.
You might also ask on our FB page. It is more active than this thread so you will have a better chance of getting a positive response.

There are several kids on the cruise, more boys than girls.

Our kid is 2, so that's not much help to you. :)

Ours will be 7 (boy) and 5 (girl) when we sail. Haven't really kept watch on other kids' ages so far. Still seems far away.

Sorry Kebby, I can't help you out on the 9yo front but my boys will be 4.5 and 6 at the time of our cruise :)

We're back.

Just looked and our last log on was 10-23-13, my we have been busy.

Let's see, since we last talked:

With youngest daughter attending the University of Oklahoma we drove to Norman, OK for 1) an orchestra concert, 2) Dads day football weekend, and 3) my team, Texas Tech, vs OU football weekend.

We drove to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas to visit the in-laws.

Had a "Rents Retreat", no children, to Vero Beach, Fl.

And just before Christmas, returned from a week at Walt Disney World.

If we didn't have to work we sure could get more traveling in, but oh well.

Hope everyone is doing well and hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza (sorry if I left someone out), and New Years.

Bill

Mark and David,

Welcome aboard. We are also looking forward to new ports, including San Juan.

Having recently returned from WDW and a non-DCL cruise ... I saw this posted on our FB page. I copied the information from a DISer sailing with us (who happens to live in PR) ... posted to page one of this thread, and copied below.

#######

Old San Juan now has a free trolley service to help you get around the city. The trolley runs Monday through Friday from 7:00am until 7:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am until 7:00pm. Just stand at any of the marked trolley stop signs and wait for the next trolley to come along. You can get off at any marked trolley stop.

These trolleys are strictly free transportation. They are not "tour" or "sight-seeing" trolleys. There is no tour guide to explain what you’re seeing. But having said that, the trolleys are a nice way to see an overview of the city. They are not the fastest way to get around in the city – the best way to get around and see more is on foot. But they are convenient when you are hot and tired, or physically unable to walk the steep streets. Please refer to the following link for additional information:

Organizing, and setting up a Group Rate hotel stay can be tough, as both the guests as well as the hotel want the best terms for themselves. Ideally, guests want the ability to book the best rates directly with the hotel, instead of giving credit card information to a DISer or a 3rd party Travel Agent. The hotel is happy to provide a low rate, provided they are guaranteed a certain number of hotel nights for a given night. Some hotels will provide open bookings, or allow groups to cancel their program if they are not able to reach the minimum number of rooms booked ... unfortunately, Sheraton Old San Juan will not let us cancel the program (once opened / enacted). Since location and quality of hotel was paramount, we were limited to the number of hotels we could approach. Since there are a limited number of hotels in paradise, the guarantee was a stickler point for Sheraton Old San Juan. Accordingly, I am happy to say, we have been able to negotiate a Friday night stay (September 26, 2014) for $159 USD per night PROVIDED WE BOOK A MINIMUM OF TEN (10) ROOMS. *** As an example, if we only get 8 rooms booked before sailing, *I* will be required to pay for the other I

HILIGHTS OF GROUP RATE: $159 USD per night (Friday, September 26, 2014), King Room with pull-out sleeper sofa, 10 rooms to be set aside (removed from inventory) - so the rooms are guaranteed available to DISers. All bookings must be completed 75 days prior to 9/26/14 (the hotel will not book rooms under this program past this point). Currently, we only have access to ten rooms. If we need more than 10 rooms, we will have to ASK if additional rooms can be provided on a case-by-case basis, but not within 75 days of 9/26/14. Booked reservations cannot be bumped for any reason, including over-booking on the part of the hotel. More details and explanation as follows:

1) Sheraton OSJ has agreed to provide a GROUP RATE of $159 USD for Friday, Friday, September 26, 2014 (230SF King Room with pull-out sleeper sofa), provided we guarantee a minimum of 10 room night stays for Friday, September 26, 2014. Reservations cannot be cancelled, and will be made via a special website created for our group. Additional night stays prior to the cruise are available (where applicable), but are not counted towards our 10 room night requirement/guarantee.

2) Sheraton OSJ requires a TWO NIGHT MINIMUM when booking a FRIDAY or SATURDAY night stay.
2a) With our GROUP RATE, the two night minimum is WAIVED ... accordingly, those booking in our group rate are able to book a single weekend night, and are NOT required to stay two nights, unless you prefer to do so. *** This is a MAJOR PERK for us, since none of us really want to stay in the hotel, while the ship is sailing away!

3) Sheraton OSJ room information:
3a) Our Group Rate is for the Traditional room (230 square feet, King bed plus sleeper sofa (2 Queen beds are available for surcharge - typical for this resort)).

4) Sheraton OSJ true Rack Rate for weekdays is currently $197.10 (FRI & SAT = $207.10) (prepaid) during our travel period.
4a) As of 1/13/14, a PROMOTIONAL rate of $189 (prepaid) is available during our travel period.
4b) As of 1/13/14, the rate for AAA and AARP is $197 (prepaid) during our travel period.
4c) It is not uncommon for Sheraton to offer online promotions, which may provide alternate pricing.
4d) As is the case with MOST Travel websites, Sheraton's website EXCLUDES taxes and resort fees.
4e) Sheraton OSJ *may* impose a RESORT FEE if/when rooms are booked through Sheraton, or a Travel website.
4f) Our Group Rate for Friday night (September 26, 2014) is $159.00 USD (prepaid), plus taxes and gratuities. Resort Fees will NOT be imposed when booking through our Group Rate.

5) Sheraton OSJ charges taxes and gratuities to each room stay.
5a) Our Room Rate is $159.00 USD. Mandatory gratuities INCLUDE $5 per night for bellhop services, and $1 per night for housekeeping. Accordingly, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TIP YOUR BELLHOP to deliver your luggage to your room, or pick up luggage for check-out. After adding sales tax and hotel tax, the total for a one night GROUP RATE stay is $207.20 USD.

#######

What do we do from here? I know I previously asked who was *interested* in rooms. However, since I will have to personally guarantee 10 rooms, I would like to ask who is willing to COMMIT to one or more rooms for Friday, September 26th? I am sure most will understand ... I'd be more than happy to personally guarantee 10 rooms ... if there is a reasonable chance we will get 10 rooms booked. Accordingly, if you believe you are READY to commit to a room, AND BOOK a room, please let me know ASAP. It we get proper response, I will ask Sheraton OSJ to open the booking website, and will post the information for all to see.

Within the past few hours ... we have had EIGHT people (on our FB page) indicate they are ready to commit to Sheraton Old San Juan ... including 5 nights for Thursday, and 8 nights for Friday. Accordingly, I will proceed with having the booking website launched, and will see if we can add Thursday as an additional guarantee / discount. STAY TUNED!

TAXI TRANSPORTATION from SJU airport, to Sheraton OSJ and the pier
(courtesy of - San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport)

San Juan Airport and Cruise Ship Ports: There is a taxi kiosk when you step outside the airport building. The cost to go to the cruise ship ports (per cab) is between USD $20 and $30. The attendant at the kiosk will give you the exact price and will write it down for the taxi driver (however, a fuel charge of $1.50 may be added). Use the same procedure in reverse to get to the airport from the cruise ship ports. *** I will try to see if the Sheraton OSJ provides some sort of shuttle service ... either direct, or indirect.

San Juan Airport Taxi Information: There are two types of taxis in the San Juan Airport district; Touristic cabs and regular cabs. In general, touristic cabs charge by the zone and number of bags. Regular cabs are metered. There is a link to the touristic taxi web site in English. Note that their web site uses the term "LMM" for San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.
