9/10 yr old girl christmas gifts???

However, she is constantly playing with my iPod. Problem is that her brother (4 years old) plays with it too....and if I got one for DD I would need to get one for DS. Now this is where it gets tricky.....my kids still believe in Santa, but we cannot afford to get the kids each an iPod and then a bunch of other stuff.....so....who are the iPod be from?? Santa?? Or mom and dad?? If they are from Santa...then they will say we didn't get them anything....if they are from us....then they will think Santa did not bring them anything. I feel like DH and I should take credit for the iPods as it is hard for us right now to get those for them...and I want them to be appreciative....but a $20 iTunes GC from Santa??? Anyway.....

Just out of curiousity...why would you HAVE to get your 4 yr old one too just because the 9 year old got one? That seems kind of crazy to me...there are just some things older kids get the younger kids don't. I mean, if you bought your 16 year old a car, you wouldn't buy one for your 10 year old too just to be "fair". Being older comes with some perks... I plan on buying an iPod touch for my almost 9 year old for Christmas, but her 6 yr old sister will not be getting one too. And I say, if you buy one/them...take the credit for them :-) Have Santa bring the smaller gifts and the really good ones be from mom and dad :-)

I agree. My DD9 has an itouch but my DS4 does not. Even though he is a pro at it. I would look into maybe just a nano or something cheaper for him.

In a way I do agree. I thought about buying him one of the new Vtech or Leapster "pads," but I feel he will outgrow it too soon. DS plays the apps more than anything.....neither child listens to music. I usually try to spend about the same amount on each child for the holidays....and I refuse to buy any more Thomas wooden trains/tracks...or Geotrax....or a bunch of plastic junk that lays around the house. I feel that the iPod would be appreciated the most and used the most for both children.

My DD is 9 also...and I am having a very hard time with Christmas. She has never played with Barbies or any other type of dolls. She got an American Girl doll last year for Christmas and it lays at the bottom of her closet. She plays with her Figit friend....got lots and lots of Zoobles for her birthday (along with Squinkies).

I will not get her a cell phone as I do not think a 9 year old needs one. She loves reading books, but I will not get her a kindle. She enjoys going to the library to pick out books and reads a lot. She already has a DSi and plenty of games. She got a Wii a couple of years ago for Christmas and hardly ever plays with it.

WHY?

My son is 4 and loves his daddy's iTouch and old iPhone.

Why would you need to get him a new one when he could still play yours?

My kids don't care what is from us and I wouldn't have when I was a kid either. I just notice when Santa got me stuff and my mom got me NOTHING. I don't really worry about "Credit".

Just continue letting the 4yo play with yours. If you try to match him now--later when he is older, you will have a difficult time trying to get him gifts. (I hope that makes sense.)

I guess part of the problem is that we are a family of 4 with one iPod....no iPads, no iPhones, no smartphones, no nooks, no kindles, only 1 desktop computer which we all share...... So between DD, DS 4 and DH I never see the iPod......which I had bought after selling my old gold jewelry.

My kids do look at the tags on the Christmas gifts to see what came from whom...be it aunts/uncles/grandparents/mom & dad/ Santa. I should have just said presents on Christmas come from Santa and left it at that years ago.....

If you want your iPod back, I would get dd an iPod, and the 4yo either a knock-off or one of the leap pad things that does a ton of stuff (and is WAY cheaper, btw).

As for the whole Santa thing, when your kids get older and no longer believe in Santa, you and dh will get all the credit anyway. My Mom was a single parent and struggled to give my brother and I good Christmases, and once we were old enough to understand/appreciate the sacrifices she made, believe me when I say we did, and still do for that matter :) Also, at that age, we were enamored with our fave gifts, and it really didn't matter where it came from, I can't ever remember feeling "let down" by either Santa or my Mom when it came to the presents. HTH!

I agree. I say get the older one an iPod and just continue to let the younger one play with yours.

My almost 6 year old is a pro with our ipods too..she's very smart and LOVES using the apps and watching videos we have loaded onto them. BUT, just because she's good at using it and playing on it, DOES NOT MEAN that she is responsible enough to take care of it properly. I can't tell you how many times my daughter has dropped my ipod (ugh), thankfully always on carpet etc.. She doesn't understand to keep it away from water and she doesn't understand about conserving battery life. She won't get one of her own until she's old enough to take care of things better. We did the same with American girl dolls. Her older sister has 2 dolls and takes GREAT care of them, we got younger dd a knockoff one when she was 4 so she could "practice". Once she proved she was responsible enough to take care of her, then we'd get her a real one (getting it this christmas).

Maybe you could get your younger a cheaper model something to "practice" and see if they can take care of it before forking out the money on a $200 electronic for a 4 year old. Then it's still a big gift for them, but a little less on the packetbook for you?

I don't know..just thoughts... Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

My BIL is going to purchase a Lenovo Tablet for my niece, along with his parents help ($).

I don't know why he thinks a $350 Lenovo Tablet is that much better than the $199 Kobo Vox Tablet for an 8 yr old. These things are outdated so fast anyway and it's for a child.

I still think he is picking this one as he plans on using it and letting her use his iTouch.

Great thread! I have 2 tween girls (8.5 & almost 10) and they are both not into toys much these days. My 8yo still likes stuffed animals (like Build a Bear), but we have so many stuffed friends that we seriously don't need anymore.

I am struggling big time with ideas for gifts. All the family is asking for lists and I can't come up with anything hardly at all for them, let alone what I'm going to get them. They both already have iPod nanos and got DSes for their birthdays last year. We have a Xbox & Wii too. I have been toying with the idea of a netbook b/c they love all those online sites like animal jam, club penguin, etc. It is the gift that would most excite them, no doubt. But I feel weird about getting such young kids their very own computers. :confused3 We didn't have a computer at my house growing up until I was almost leaving for college. Different times, I know. Anyway, does anyone know if it's possible to get a netbook for around $150-$200? I'm guessing they will drop to that price around Black Friday?

We got our netbook at Target last year on sale for $199. It's Acer brand and we just love it. My dh has a laptop but it's the Netbook we take when traveling because of it's size. I bought a wireless mouse to use with it and my girls love it. They are similar age to your girls and I am finding it IS a difficult age to buy for. Some of the big toy ads came today and they've circled some things so I'm getting a better idea of what they'd want. We are also drowning in stuffed animals!

I'm unemployed this year so my gift budget is definitely much smaller than previous years (which was only about $100-200 anyway) However, her birthday is on January 5th so I need to come up with at least 2 gifts plus some stocking stuffers.

Right now, some of the possibilities are ice skates, telescope (she's been asking for one but I'm hesitant because we live in a big city so I don't think reasonably-priced telescopes are going to be able to see much in the sky), kt gold earrings (she just got her ears pierced this summer and is still wearing the starter earrings), a tween girl Christian devotional she has been asking for, Rio DVD....

Stocking stuffers will be a photo mug I got for just the cost of shipping, a Webkinz (her Webkinz acct has expired and she wants to reinstate it) and maybe some books, if I can get them for free (from Paperbackswap) or very inexpensively.

I'm fortunate my daughter isn't very into electronics. She has a DS lite and we have a Wii but she doesn't play with them too often. We would both love an iPad but that's definitely not in our budget this year (currently we share an iTouch)

Great ideas here! my dd is 9 1/2. One thing she did ask for was a bean bag chair for her room. Trying to decide if I should get a vinyl one(easy to clean) or a fabricone(maybe I can find one that has a washable cover?)

we are taking a family trip (with grandparents and aunt) to WDW for DD's 10th birthday the week before Christmas. because of this, we'd already discussed having smaller birthdays and Christmas this year.

DD is getting the Lego Millenium Falcon for Christmas. it's what she wanted specifically. she'll also get some smaller things, but that will be about it.
DD is also getting a trip to WDW for her 10th birthday (two weeks before x-mas), but our trip is a surprise. I plan on making her a gift basket with some coloring pages, crayons, snacks and other items to keep her busy while we are in line or traveling between parks. We are giving her the Candlelight Processional package on her birthday because she saw on the newest planning video and has been asking for months to see it and Illuminations. We might also throw in the Behind the Seeds Tour depending on the budget.

For Christmas, she wants the Razor Scooter with the chalk on the back, Build-A-Bear gift card and maybe some Wii games.

I read the entire thread for ideas! Thanks so much!

I have one question - what are you buying at the Bath and Body Works? My dd9 has been really into scents lately but I didn't think she would need to smell good at 9. I guess I'm having a hard time with her growing up.

Here is what she is getting but I'm still shopping for deals. Thank goodness she just got her ears pierced so everyone is focused on buying her earrings since she will be able to change them two weeks before Christmas.

Barbie Dream Townhouse
Earrings
Craft Kits
Purse
Robe
Overnight travel kit for bathroom stuff

I gave several ideas to the Grandmas. She asked for more Uncle John's bathroom readers for kids. If you haven't seen these, they are great. It's the one book I'm willing to buy because she reads and reads it again (we get everything else at the library). And she is asking for Movie gift cards and Illustory.

My mom bought the fijit and holiday barbie.

100AcreWood - we get the light scents for DD, if we do lotions. I have also bought the Peppermint Twist 3in1 for her one year, and she loves the mini antibacterial gels. I'm going to sniff the Pink Sugarplum and see if it is overpowering, if not that may be a choice this year.

She wants a TV for her room, gift cards for Justice and iTunes, Justice clothes, new BBW pocketbac scents, and a new basketball goal. She has recently mentioned a particular barbie from the show Victorious that she saw in a toy catalog from TRU but she doesn't play with her barbies much anymore. So far I've only gotten her some Poison Apple books and preordered the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I haven't decided on any of the rest at this point. She already has an itouch and had both a DSi and laptop stolen from her earlier this year but she doesn't seem to want us to replace those?? I'm sure there will be additions to the list.

This week I bought a barbie clothes set at Wal Mart for $12 and a gyroscope helicopter today on amazon for $20. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum!

Last year my DD9 (birthday is Nov 30), wanted a beanbag chair. It was one of her bigger gifts. We bought one from pottery barn teen. It is big (big enough for me to sit with her) and not real cheap but totally worth the cost. There is a washable cover. We got a denim one with peace sign and paid to get her name on it. We use it every day. It the place DH sits to play the wii.

DD wants a laptop. :rotfl2: Needless to say she's not getting it. She has put some wii, and DS games on her list.

Denise in MI

I just have to ask. What's so hilarious about a 10 y/o wanting a laptop? My ds10 has asked for one as well - I'm getting him a tablet instead though.
