9/10 yr old girl christmas gifts???

When youngest DD, now 13, was in the 9 - 11 age range, she received birthday and Christmas gifts of clothes, crafts kits/ supplies, Nintendo DS and games, books and somewhere in there, there was an iPod shuffle, later upgraded to an iPod nano! I almost forgot that I'd given her a really inexpensive flip cell phone one year (practically free with rewards points) - she thought she had arrived! LOL!

There was no way I would have bought an iPod touch for her at 9 or 10. She was too careless and I was concerned about the internet browsing! We are not early adopters - in spite of begging for ages, she didn't get an iPod touch until last Christmas, a few weeks before her 13th birthday. (I got her Nano...my first gen nano finally died after years of faithful service!)

At that age, I'd keep my investment in character-themed items, down to the minimum. DD13 and her two older sisters were quite fickle at that stage. I can think of a few things that quickly became "so-last-year" within a few weeks or months of getting them.

The Kobe Vox is similar i believe and for Canada....i'm thinking of getting my kids them. It may be a cheaper option to the ipad for my kids, but they use Ipads at school so really want those, but i havent even gotten them itouch's yet and they are 11 and 13............

I'll let him know tomorrow. My sister and BIL spend most of the day going to stores looking at what is available.

This sounds very similar to the Kindle.

I'm starting to think I should own one!

I actually found this thread trying to search the net for American Girl Christmas sale info. :) I am new to the site, but I have actually read the Disney boards before we went to Disneyland last October (that was fun!).

Anyhow, my DD just turned 9 and I think I will get her the American Girl, Kaya (the Native American), and some accessories. I actually pre-ordered the Kindle Fire for her, but I think I will get the AG stuff instead, knowing I have limited time with her and the toys.

I did get her an MP3 player last year and one of those stuffed idogs that act like speakers (without the batteries) and she listens to stories on it every night; we download the stories from her CD's or from the library. I think that was the best $70 I ever spent. However, it is full and I was thinking of getting her a 2nd one when the Kindle Fire was released. I am getting the Fire for my DS11 and figured I would just get 2, but I think I'll give it to DH and get the AG stuff for DD.

I already have 2 pair of PJ's from Costco, an American Girl dog also from Costco (gotta love that place), a Webkinz pig (Amazon is a great place for cheap Webkinz), the 3rd season of Little House on the Prairie and a movie DVD from Target that had 5 different movies.

I will likely to add a craft present and new video game, as well. Maybe I will get some Schleich animals (she pays with those all of the time) or Calico Critters. They make good stocking stuffers.

I don't think she would be happy with clothes or makeup or shoes. She just isn't there. I still buy her non-uniform clothes from Gymboree.

I will say that she did hate all dolls until last year....when she suddenly discovered American Girl. I don't even know how that happened. She loves her American Girl dolls, but she still dislikes Barbies.

My 10 yr old loves anything from Justice -- and I mean anything. It can be a notebook, but if it comes from Justice it is the best notebook ever.

She loves crafts from AC Moore.

She will get a Wii game and a DSi game or two, but unlike my boys, she doesn't need the latest game that is out. I can usually get some good buys on Black Friday of older release games.

She also loves Avon shower gels in all the various fragrances.

Any crazy colored socks are a big hit too.

Hot Topic accessories -- Santa already got a headband with Penguin ears from there for her.

She loves American Girl books, but not so interested in the dolls anymore.

She'll never be too old for Build a Bear.

Ooooo, that reminds me! DD LOVES the Little Miss Matched store in DTD. I'll have to stop there and pick up some fun stuff for her stocking.

Thanks for the reminder. :)

Forgot to add -- DUCT Tape -- I've been stocking up on it. She loves all things made with Duct Tape. We have roses and purses and Halloween decorations. I had to give her a Duct Tape budget because it is so expensive with all the projects she likes. At this rate I will be that Mom whose kid goes to Prom in Duct Tape -- maybe she'll win the crazy scholarship they give for it.

No Electronics -- I've been lucky with my DD. She doesn't really like electronics. She plays DSi in the car, waiting at doctors, etc, but she can have the same 3 games for a year and is happy.

She usually gets a gift card on her birthday to play Disney Fairies on line for a 30 day period.

She would LOVE a cell phone -- she truly is the only one in her class without one. Our house rule for cell phone doesn't have an age attached -- you basically get it when Mom & Dad need you to have one do to sports schedules. I got tired of sitting at ice rinks and waiting outside school for the away game school bus. She doesn't play sports, so I think she will have a long wait.

I had never heard of LittleMissMatched. Just checked out the site. I am so getting some things from there -- The water bottles will be great for some on my list. Thx SaraJayne!

You are welcome. :) I had never heard of it either, until we stumbled across it at Disney last fall..they have some really fun things for grown up girls, too. ;)

My 10 year old is easy--she had her list done about a month ago! She wants a camera, spy stuff, science kits, rocks & minerals and anything zebra print. I might also get her a karaoke set. We also used our Christmas Club to get her Wicked tickets for her birthday (instead of a party) but that isn't until February.

My 9 year old is more difficult -- she wants AG stuff (Kanani and accessories for Bitty Baby) but then isn't sure beyond that. My husband can earn prizes through a program at work and is close to having enough points for a ipod touch, so we might be able to get her that. She also likes jewelry and accessories so we will do things like that. She loves to cook, so I might also get her some cookbooks and cooking tools.

For both of them I found some marked down tie-dye and craft kits, which are always a hit during winter vacation.

For those that were asking about the Christmas budget -- We do a Christmas Club every year through our bank and we would be lost without it. It automatically takes a set amount of money each week and then it is deposited (with a small amount of interest added) the first week of October. We use the money for all our Christmas gifts and usually both girls birthdays. It helps since we would not have the money on hand otherwise and we try not to use credit cards.

Do you mind sharing what kind of makeup products you get for your daughter? I know mine is going to start asking for makeup soon and I'd love some recommendations for things that are a little more age appropriate. I know that Clinique used to have some products that were so sheer they couldn't be overdone. Don't know if they still carry those tho. TIA:)

My Target has some on an end cap. Not sure of the product name. Glitter cheek powder, light colored eye shadow, lip gloss, etc. They cost around $3 each.

My DDs 'Big Gift' is a Totoro bento lunch kit from Japan. It's not big in size but it was not cheap. Other than that some Harajuku stuff, some Hello Kitty stuff and a few t-shirts she wants.

What about The Little House on the Prairie series? :) Or any of the American Girl books?

I just want to say that the LHOP series is a GREAT idea. :thumbsup2
Someone suggested it to me last year...and I purchased the DVD set....Here it is October and we STILL have not gotten through all the DVDs in the set and my daughter absolutely loves it...Its something she asks to watch with mom pretty much on a weekly basis. I love the series personally. :thumbsup2

We got this set last christmas and it absolutely was one of the best gifts. click HERE

Great recommendation.

:goodvibes Little House on the Prairie DVD set sounds like a great gift! I think Im going to actually purchase it for my Mom the woman who has everything, this was one of her favorite shows well this and the Waltons I had not even thought of that until NOW and my daughters who go over every weekend could enjoy this with her :goodvibes

.

That's funny, dd10 won't touch anything that says Justice! She will still wear some of the clothes (she is 55 pounds and wears an 8 slim, and Justice has a lot of sizing options), but prefers P.S.

Ten is that age where it goes either way with Justice. Depending on the kid and area you live. My DD9 is starting to pull away from the younger styles in Justice and buy the solid color shirts and she loves plain styled jeans.

Both kids love the Justice accessories or what I call junk. ;) I don't see many kids wearing Justice in 5th grade in our area.

I can't believe how many of us have daughters the same age, and with birthdays right before or after Christmas! Mine will be 9 in Jan. and her big Christmas gift will be the hp touchpad we were lucky to get, DH wants to give it to her now, but no way or I'd be lost as to what to get her. I already have no clue for her birthday. She will also get some clothes for Christmas and some AG accessories, no more dolls though, she has 3 already. Maybe some science and craft stuff, she loves to experiment and make things, but then again, I usually end up cleaning up those messes!

Those messes are what keep me from wanting to buy craft stuff too.:rotfl:

My DD is 9 also...and I am having a very hard time with Christmas. She has never played with Barbies or any other type of dolls. She got an American Girl doll last year for Christmas and it lays at the bottom of her closet. She plays with her Figit friend....got lots and lots of Zoobles for her birthday (along with Squinkies).

I will not get her a cell phone as I do not think a 9 year old needs one. She loves reading books, but I will not get her a kindle. She enjoys going to the library to pick out books and reads a lot. She already has a DSi and plenty of games. She got a Wii a couple of years ago for Christmas and hardly ever plays with it.

However, she is constantly playing with my iPod. Problem is that her brother (4 years old) plays with it too....and if I got one for DD I would need to get one for DS. Now this is where it gets tricky.....my kids still believe in Santa, but we cannot afford to get the kids each an iPod and then a bunch of other stuff.....so....who are the iPod be from?? Santa?? Or mom and dad?? If they are from Santa...then they will say we didn't get them anything....if they are from us....then they will think Santa did not bring them anything. I feel like DH and I should take credit for the iPods as it is hard for us right now to get those for them...and I want them to be appreciative....but a $20 iTunes GC from Santa??? Anyway.....
