*sigh* I'm experiencing some guilt about taking Leo out of school for Fockerfest. True, it's only 1st grade. And true, his school has no policy on days missed. But two days missed in the first week of school? Seems wrong, somehow. :guilty: So I'm thinking now of sending him for half a day, making our arrival time at WDW late afternoon, and taking him out of school the following day.

Anyone have some words to help assuage my mom-guilt?!

Oh dear! No way do I have anything that would make you feel better. In fact the opposite. I'm so sorry. I could never take my kids out of school the first week of school. To me they are just trying to settle in and get acquainted with other kids and the teacher. The first days are rough enough. I feel bad for not telling you what you wanted to hear but I have strong feelings on that. However, I am also not one to judge anyone and what they decide is best for their kids ... at least not in public .. You know Leo best and I know my own kids best. Oh drat! I hope I didn't upset you.

I'm right there with you, V. Brenna starts school on the 20th, so she'll miss the 21st & 22nd. The school is NOT going to be happy with us. :sad2: I went back and forth about 'should we go' and 'should we cancel' but in the end, I decided that it was worth the wrath of the school to get to meet everyone down in WDW. Don't worry, Leo won't miss much, and he'll be just fine when you get back. School will be there for the next 12-16 years... a few days here and there are nothing!

LOL, look - now I've made you feel guilty, too! Sorry DM! But don't worry - what I failed to mention was that the only thing that will be different is his classroom... in which he spends every afternoon now. Excepting any new students, he'll be with the same kids, same teachers, etc. So I'm not at all worried about adujustment. If he were changing schools, I wouldn't even consider taking him out. But as I'm typing this, I'm feeling better about the siutation. So, actually, you really DID help! ;)

So true, so true. WHY are schools starting so early anyway?! I don't remember stating until after Labor Day. :confused3

I don't see a problem with this as long as Leo doesn't mind. Have you asked him and to see if he doesn't mind missing his second day of school?
I know when I was a kid I could care less about missing school to be on vacation and I never had a problem when I had to go back. So you really shouldn't feel any mom-guilt on that part.

Secondly, the first day is a little important for what DM said but seeing as Leo's still with the same kids then I don't see taking him out for half a day too bad. The second day is a Friday and really they probably won't be doing that much that he won't be able to catch up on. Why would they start school on a Thursday?! :confused3 Really did they really need those extra 2 days instead of just starting it on the Monday. :upsidedow Gah! :sad2:

Oh no - it's not the first two days, just the first week! They start that Monday, and he'll be missing part of Thurs. and all of Fri.

As for asking him... he couldn't care less, trust me! :rotfl:

I past your dilemma onto my resident :teacher: (Jim) and he sadi not to even worry about it, especially since he will have the same teachers...you and they know what to expect. Jim said if it makes you feel better have him take a little notebook to write or draw something about what happened during each day;)

Ok, I know I'm a little late - BUT I do know that Leo school situation is unique as far as not much change, ie: new kids, new teacher, etc. Honestly V, you know Leo best and you know if Leo will be OK with missing 2 days of the first week of school. IMO, I think Leo will be fine and honestly if it were Maddie I would say the same. HOWEVER, if it was Evan I wouldn't do it.
Question: Doesn't Leo go to "school" all year? I mean where does he go during the summer? If he goes to the same school, what exactly would he be missing?

I keep remembering the mother from last year and how her kids were chatting with me in the Safari line and how they told me they were missing the first 10 days of school and the mother gave me this look: :headache:
:lmao:

So after reading your second comment I see absolutely no problem with you taking him out whatsoever. And you should feel even better because it's coming from me - Mrs. Sorry But This Is What I Think! ;)

And what year of school is he entering? He's still very young. The younger the better.

Because ya'll don't have a certain politician who owns a seafood restaurant at the coast who needs to have as much summer as possible to pump even more money into his pocket so he was able to get a law passed that school could not start before Aug. 25. Shall I ship him down there?

BTW, our school began on Fri Aug 25 in 2006. I felt compelled to rush back from our trip so my children didn't miss this first day of school. I wish we would have had them just miss that day and extended our trip.

You guys ROCK! Thanks for making me feel better. :grouphug: The funny thing is, I wouldn't hesitate to pull him for a week later in the year, but that first week-thing was getting to me. Silly V.

Jim said if it makes you feel better have him take a little notebook to write or draw something about what happened during each day;)
Oooo, I like this idea, regardless of school! Thanks Jim :thumbsup2

Funny you should ask.... that's the Question of the Moment. :headache: Pre-primary (what he's in now) goes full-year. Grades 1 and up have a regular school year. The school hasn't decided what they're doing with the kids entering 1st grade next year - they'll either continue the full-year program through summer, or let them do summer camp on a weekly basis. I'm praying for the latter, since his dad and I will have him on vacation for 4 weeks between the two of us. So he'll have something to cover summer, but I don't know what yet. Good point that it'll be at the same place, though.

::yes:: Entering 1st grade!

:lmao: Sorry s'late! But yeah, I'll take him... unless he wants to cut my local budget some more. :sad2:
Fl's new school start is no earlier than 2 weeks prior to Labor Day.

V, glad to see that you have worked everything out.

How odd that you all seem to have kids starting school in August. Up here the schools start back up after labour day and even when I loved in CA and VA we didn't start until after labour day.

Private Itineraries:

Jo, T, Janet, Lessa, Mo, & CE.

If anyone else wants to send me their itineraries, please PM me with them. They don't even have to be complete yet as I'm willing to make changes as you go along. Remember, T has given me her itinerary and we ALL know how she sticks to the first itinerary ... :rolleyes1

We start back around Aug 20 or so. They bypassed the after Labor Day thing cause with snow days, we go till mid-June anyway.

V--take him out whilst he's little and don't sweat it. My kids have no long standing problems with missing some of 1st grade.....but high school IS becoming a problem. I think our recent trip may result in a C in Geometry cause she's having a tough time catching up. (not her best subject anyway---she's got an A in World History)

ITA, the summer camp sounds like a good idea, especially for families with vacations planned.
So what did you decide? popcorn::

Hey! :headache: I'll have you know that I've already added my intinerary to my Passporter with a Sharpie! :snooty: I am NOT changing my plans.

I do believe I am officially beyond my Disney funk. I was really feeling grumpy about the GG nonsense,(so much so that I've hardly been DISsing:scared1: ) but it seems I've passed my ******* along to V. Sorry  It can be incredibly frustrating.

And as far as taking Leo out of school for two days, I am not a great person to offer an opinion, but I figure life has it's own lessons, and sometimes meeting new people and making new friends is well worth the exchange of time out of the classroom, especially at his age.

Did everyone see that they aren't offering Little Ones EMH anymore?

*sigh* I'm experiencing some guilt about taking Leo out of school for Fockerfest.
I know others have said stuff but I think it won't matter, my girls missed the first 2 days back at school a few years ago when we went to St Lucia, I'd booked it so far in advance thinking the schools would go back at a certain time and then they went earlier :headache: It was the same school, same kids but with a new teacher who they already knew, the only problem was that they didn't get to choose who they sat with but that was soom sorted!

OMG :faint: No plan changes :faint: Are you sure? :rotfl2:

Haven't seen that, my girls are too old but it's a shame as it looked like tons of fun for the little ones with all the characters etc!
