8.9M earthquake in Japan - TDR Affected

There was a huge 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan.

It seems Tokyo Disney Resort was affected somewhat. Guests are not able to leave since all the rail lines are shut down and that's how most people get around. Snce the resort is built on landfill, part of the soil has liquified, so part of the parking lot was affected.

My oughts and prayers are with the people of Japan.

My friend is in Japan with her son right nowfor the sledge hockey championships. I hope they are all right. I saw a short video of the water and at first it almost looks almost peaceful until you realize how fast its moving and that boats and other large items are just being swept up.

Update: It looks like where my friend is, is relatively safe. That is a relief, however watching more and more of the coverage shows just how scary the situation is in general. Sending good thoughts to Japan, hoping that will help in some tiny way.

I'm aboard the Disney Wonder. Today was supposed to be another day in Cabo San Lucas, but Mexican authorities have closed the ports until at least 8am (MST). I'll update when I know more.

Tom- apparently, one of the best places to be during the tsunami warning is on a cruise ship! (who knew )

My in-laws are Japanese and we haven't been able to get a hold of them yet. They are in Kyoto which is the other side of the country so we assume they are ok but it's still nerve racking.

I've seen some pictures of the parking lot of Tokyo Disney completely flooded. Actually, flooded isn't even the right word. It's scary.

Everyone over there is in my thoughts.

God bless those people. I'm not too concerned about TDR. So many other things to worry about. I'm really concerned about that nuclear reactor.

We heard from my friend...they were in the Big Hat Arena in Nagano watching the Canada-US game when the earthquake hit. She thought it looked like the seats in front of them were moving side to side and felt they were moving too. A Japanese man beside them looked frightened and took off out the building. The Japanese head coach who was there watching told them to just hang on and not to worry. It stopped fairly quickly, but where they are is on the other side of the country. The huge ball shaped sound system was swaying due to the quake so they stopped the game until things settled down. They restarted the game, Canada won 2-1, and so far, they've been told the games will go on as planned provided there is no further ground shaking.

We were relieved to hear from her, but the coverage makes me worried for so many who are in danger. I'm listening to CBC Radio (our national broadcaster) and there are so many people calling in who are unable to reach relatives. Good news is that our west coast is not tracking the ocean movement that was expected per the scientists there, so while they are not out of the woods yet, they are hopeful for little effects.

People are stuck in Tokyo Disney. They are spending the night there. The train that transports the people is not running. Heck of a way to do something we always wanted to do, spend the night in Disney!

My heart goes out to everyone living in or visiting Japan. My friend has a son who is stationed there...so far she is unable to reach him.....although he is not in the area that is affected, she still worries.

Our next concern is for our fellow co-workers in our Hawaii office.

There have been a few of these whirlpools off the coast of So. Cal. Not nearly as big, but still pretty impressive looking...

I'm really concerned about that nuclear reactor.

^ That's my main concern, as well.

The media is downplaying the potential disaster that could occur, and I can understand that for now.

That giant whirlpool was unlike anything I have EVER seen. Just unbelievable. Remember, just one cubic foot of sea water weighs 60 to 65 pounds ! It's unfathomable (pardon the pun) the damage that much weight rushing in at 500 miles an hour and 30 feet high can do to buildings and property.

I'm sure there will be many stories and many video's to come.

May God be with them.

I've been glued to CNN all day....... It's horrendous what has happened

The figures that are coming out say they are estimating over 1000 people died, but then a report showed a town of 70,000 was obliterated, so I'm sure the numbers will go a lot higher

Now there is a Nuclear plant that is on the verge of a meltdown!

My thoughts are with the poor people living this nightmare
