8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan!

Yes, just hearing on Fox 80,000 missing. Reporters saying, "there are people in those cars you are watching wash away." I can't imagine the horror...

That makes me sick to my stomach.:sad1:

Me too. Absolutely horrifying.

I agree. :sad1: I had to quit watching after I saw a minivan floating away with the rear wipers going. You know that vehicle wasn't just parked in a parking lot. I hope that person got out and away, but I couldn't watch anymore. Awful.

I have a couple of friends who have Japanese exchange students staying with them. They just picked these girls up last night (gr. 8) and they were only suppose to stay 4 days.
They were asked not to say anything to these students and not let them call home or watch tv.
They were getting all the students together this morning to tell them.
My heart also goes out to these students who are so far from home and don't speak the language very well.:sad1:

We are also on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada.

I'm sure their families in Japan are happy the children are safe in Canada right now. But, how awful. I wouldn't begin to know what to do with a child I just met who is going to get such an upset thrown at them in a foreign country. I hope all their families back in Japan are safe and sound and these kids can get through to their loved ones quickly.

Oh dear!

This whole situation is just so utterly devastating. They haven't even begun to estimate the amount of casualties have they?

Fox said they are looking into reports of some people in California being swept out to sea. I hope it's not true. :sad2:

This is at the top of the CNN page at the moment.

Breaking News: An estimated 6.6-magnitude earthquake has struck Nagano and Niigata prefectures in Japan, Kyodo news service reports.

Not seeing any details on this yet.

I heard that as well. Anyone who goes in the ocean on the west coast today is crazy. They told people to stay away. Hope this turns out to be false.

A couple of years ago we had high seas here in Maine due to a hurricane and folks went to Acadia National Park to watch the surf.... people were swept out to sea and I believe 2 people died- one was a 10 year old child.

Not sure if this was already posted here, but... if anyone would like to make a donation to the American Red Cross here's a link:

I work for our state's Attorney General's Office. Just a word of caution. If anyone contacts YOU about giving a donation to help with disaster relief, don't give them any of your personal information or make a donation of any kind. Organizations like the Red Cross will not call for donations. You must contact them to give a donation Sad to say, disasters like this is when scammers come out and prey on innocent victims. I've been watching this tragedy unfold all day. My thoughts are with those in Japan and now Crescent City who have damage to property and loss of life.

The 8.9 earthquake ruptured a 150 mile long hole in the earths crust and 50 miles wide? Holy cow!

Off topic: Saudia Arabia now has protests. The energy thing would scare me when it comes to that country.

Does anyone know the time lapse between the earthquake and the tsunami?
Geez Louise, first your world is devastated by a huge earthquake and then, as if the quake wasn't enough... everything and everyone left is simply washed away in a big wave?

I just can't fathom this.

Excellent advice. Thanks!:thumbsup2

They just reported that a man was swept out to sea in California. He was on the beach taking pictures of the waves. They have started a search for him. Why or why don't people listen to what the authorities say? Do they think it doesn't apply to them?

They also said there has been some damage in Hawaii. One hotel lobby is filled with water. So far, no injuries reported there.

I am very conerned about the nuclear reactor that is overheating. They plan on venting steam to keep it from blowing.

They said Japan had 10-15 mins of warning before the tsunami struck. I don't know if that was immediately after the earthquake, though.

I'm guessing it probably was, as the epicenter wasn't that far off shore.

Per my Hawaiian friend that lives on Oahu...Oahu has been given the all clear and all roads have re-opened and buses will be returning to normal service shortly.

No damage on Oahu, but there has been some on the Big Island and Maui (flooding roads, mainly).
