8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan!

So tragic what's happening in Japan. Prayers for everyone impacted.

I'm wondering about cruise ships that might have been in the area of Hawaii? Does a tsunami have an impact on them? I thought I read that for boats/ships out in the middle of the ocean, that they would not be affected by a tsunami, unless they are somewhat close to a shoreline?

If they are out at sea, they probably won't even notice. Some ships (at least CCL ones) that were docked in California and were supposed to be leaving on new cruises today, pulled out to sea to wait it out, and will re-dock and load when the danger has passed.

OMG, DH & I woke up 45 min ago to our phone ringing off the hook. (Family and friends all calling from the East coast.) We are in San Diego and under a Tsunami warning. This is so scary. We are just hoping the waves will not be as high has the News is predicting.

My family and I are praying for Japan and its people. Such a shame...it's a wonderful country. I hope they are able to recover quickly.

Watching the video people in Japan walking around the business district. Many of the people are wearing face masks. You know the white ones to breath through. Do they carry them around in their pockets or what? Just in case an earthquake strikes? Or is the pollution so bad that people often wear them?

Hope you will be okay, Karen.

Thanks, sweetie, I am glued to the tv, they are running non-stop on every channel.

We were watching our local 10pm News last night when they interrupted about the quake/tsunami in Japan. We stayed up very late watching it all and the News mentioned a possible tsunami warning for Hawaii … but now allot has changed through the night and so the West coast will be seeing very large waves.

They are saying 40-50 minutes for La Jolla (where my son lives) to see the waves.

All the News is telling people to PLEASE do not go to the beach. Just stay home.

We are only beginning to learn of the scale of this disaster....

People in Japan usually wear the masks when they are sick with a cold so that they don't infect other people. They are very polite there! I'm sure a lot of them keep a mask around just in case....

I didn't notice any pollution when we were there...L.A. was way worse....

I think we should be okay. KUSI was just talking about the rip currents being the dangerous part. I think that the waves shouldn't get too high. What were they saying earlier? Hmm. I'm going to be at UCSD in La Jolla a little later today.. hopefully the drive over there won't be too hectic.

Stay safe!!!!

News was just interviewing UCSD Prof's and they have predicted one to two feet high waves now for OB, Mission Beach, La Jolla etc.

10 minutes ….

You too, Kate, stay safe.

Now they are back to saying 8 foot waves … confusing. Hitting San Diego and then Newport Beach and up the coast.

These news reports bring tears to my eyes. I guess reality strikes you at the worst of times.

I talked with a friend in Hawaii, she said that most people are fine and she can't see much damage yet, but she is also at the highest point of where she is at. She will be sending updates soon.

I saw a video of cars that fell off of a bridge and were just washed away...and I cried. Can you imagine, you are driving along with your kids in the backseat and all of a sudden you are thrown in the water and gone. In the blink of an eye.
