Hey all!

Sorry to be arriving so late to the party but I've been focusing all my cruise energy up to this point on the Fantasy MV which happens in March. Once that's done I'll have a little more time for thinking about this cruise.

But I'll still stick around and post as often as I can. This will mark our 5th Disney Cruise, having gone through the Panama Canal twice and done 2 Western Caribbeans. We've looked forward to Alaska for YEARS and we're so excited. I don't even care that much about the ports and the excursion. I just want to see Alaska!! We're from the Los Angeles area, if anyone is interested in a pre-cruise meet up.

So on our cruise we will have:
Myself (Tracy)
DH (David)
DS 20 (Erik)
DD 18 (Alison) her first cruise NOT in the Teen club. I'm a little worried for her because I've never known anyone who loved that teen club as much as she does! But hopefully she and her brother will do stuff together and there will be an active college age group on this cruise.

We are going with friends, (NON DISers) who have never done a Disney cruise before so I dont' know that we'll be up for a lot of DISmeet activities but if things get going we'll at least be up for some of it.

We DEFINITELY want to do FEs if that gets going. If anyone doesn't really get the whole FE thing, there is a great thread that maybe you want to link in the first post just for informational purposed for the uninitiated! It's available here:

Specific to our cruise I found a couple of other very helpful threads that others might find useful (Feel free to post on page one or not as desired! Some of it may already be there.)

Address for shipping stuff ahead to Seattle (FE gifts?)

Formal Night info from last year's Alaska cruises:

And just for fun for those who really enjoy planning what to pack: (It's not DCL-specific so you'll need to weed out whats not helpful for cruising)
http://www.mousesavers.com/timeismoney.html#packing

This one is DCL specific and also includes a lot of GREAT Cruise tips but it's an Excel spreadsheet, not a thread. There are tabs at the bottom with different categories of information. It's very comprehensive!

Hope that helps some!

Looking forward to getting to know my fellow cruisers as we get closer to leaving!

Hi Tracyvp-
Glad to hear there will be some 20 somethings on the cruise for my boys to join in with! Not sure if yet if we will do the FE, but considering it. My 24 yo has been on 2 cruises and my 22 yo on one. I know they are always looking for same age people to hang out with!

Definitely glad there will be some older "kids" on this cruise. My kids always make terrible fun of the whole FE thing but they're usually the first ones looking in their pouches whenever we get back to the room!

I must say it will be a bit easier with a smaller group. Both of our last 2 cruises we had WELL over 100 staterooms participating and while it was a LOT of fun to get gifts every single day of a 2-week cruise, it was challenging coming up with gifts for that many rooms! (Since I hand make my gifts.)

Welcome aboard :wave2:
Glad to see some traffic on this board, It's been lonely for a long time
I hope as we get closer the board picks up.

First page has been updated. and links added
Thanks

Hi Ed -- Looks like you've been adding lots of cruisers to your meet thread! It has been kind of slow for the 8/13 one. I'm wondering if DCL is considering adding the earlier August dates to some of the reduced pricing. Time will tell!

Beth:

Can you fill me in on the reduced pricing you mentioned? Has that been offered on other Alasak cruises? How reduced?

Separately, in response to the question about dinner seating, we are early. First time for us. On our previous two cruises we have been late. But we were concerned about the need to be off the ship early for the early port times and thought we would try early dining this time.

We did late just one time and we hated it. We were SO full after dinner that we really didn't want to do anything except go to bed! Plus if they had a late-night dessert buffet or anything like that we were still so full from dinner that we didn't enjoy it. We are much happier with early dinner.

Our other two cruises has all been early too, Works out well for us, and if we get hungry later then is always room service.

I'm not sure if anyone on our sailing is/was considering the Adventures by Disney add-on for our cruise. I was eagerly awaiting word on whether one would be offered, and discovered earlier this week that ABD is indeed offering adventure add-ons for the Alaska cruises (including the Aug. 6 sailing). However, the pricing for the add-on is the same as last year's -- even though the port times in Juneau and Ketchikan are shorter (and so the ABD add-on offers fewer activities). In addition, the add-on does not have any activities scheduled for our stop in Victoria. I wrote the following letter to ABD to express my disillusionment with the add-on pricing and itinerary. I encourage anyone who has similar views to follow suit:

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Having booked a 2012 Alaskan cruise on the Disney Wonder some time ago (in fact, when we were on board the Disney Magic last summer during an 11-day Mediterranean cruise), I was eagerly awaiting an announcement from Adventures by Disney about a trip add-on for the 2012 Alaska cruises. I was quite excited to discover earlier this week that ABD is indeed offering an Alaskan Wonders Family Cruise Vacation applicable to my sailing date. However, when I called Disney Cruise Line to receive pricing information for this adventure, my excitement quickly turned to disbelief and disappointment. The pricing quoted by DCL is $2,299 per adult and $2,069 per child.

My understanding is that this pricing is virtually identical to the pricing for the ABD add-on for the 2011 Alaska cruises. However, due to the issues created by using Seattle as a departure port for the 2012 Alaska cruises versus Vancouver for the 2011 cruises, the port times in Juneau and Ketchikan for the 2012 sailings have been significantly shortened. Given the reduction in the port times (and the resulting reduction in activities associated with the ABD add-on in these ports), I would have expected a corresponding reduction in the price of the ABD add-on for the 2012 cruises. In addition, the 2012 cruises make a stop in Victoria, and I do not see any activities listed in the ABD itinerary for this port. Another option would have been to increase the “content” offered with the 2012 add-on (such as higher quality excursions or attractive activities on sea days, such as exclusive ship’s tours or food or beverage tastings, or perhaps stateroom upgrades).

Given the reduced number (and apparent quality) of activities in Juneau and Ketchikan, and the lack of any activities in Victoria, it seems a more realistic price point for this add-on would be something like $1,500 per person. At that price point, I would seriously consider the add-on for my family. But I find it very difficult to justify a cost of $8,736 for my family of four (two adults and two children) given the reduced number of activities in Juneau and Ketchikan and the lack of any activities in Victoria. In pricing out the most comparable excursions for Skagway and excursions we might otherwise choose in Juneau and Ketchikan (such as the helicopter and dog sledding trip, which is a glaring omission from the 2012 itinerary, since it was part of the 2011 adventures, and by all accounts a favorite among the 2011 adventurers) and adding back the costs of the extras that are included in the ABD trip but would otherwise be paid for separately (such as the ship’s gratuities, the photo CD and the case of water), I arrive at a total cost of approximately $4,832. Surely the access to the adventure guides, the welcome and farewell receptions and a session with the ship’s naturalist cannot close the gap of the almost $4,000 difference in price! I realize there are intangible benefits to the ABD add-on (and probably other tangible “extras” and “surprises” that I have not catalogued), and indeed, these are part of the allure of the ABD product, but I continue to struggle mightily to find the additional $4,000 in value that the price of this ABD add-on suggests. As DVC owners, frequent Disney Parks visitors and veterans of two prior Disney cruises (Alaska will be our third), we are clearly great fans of the Disney product. We are seriously considering the Emerald Isle adventure for 2013 and were hoping to get our first taste of the ABD experience via the Alaska cruise add-on. But I have to say that the pricing and itinerary for this adventure leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

If I have missed something regarding the benefits offered by the ABD add-on relative to the cost, I welcome enlightenment (indeed, I would so like to find a way to justify moving forward with this add-on). You can reach me by phone at **** or by email at *****. Otherwise, I strongly encourage you to reconsider the pricing for this adventure so that it is more in line with the number and quality of the activities offered.

Re: DCL Add On

Thank you so much for finding out this info! I was also wondering if an ABD would be offered, but I too was concerned about the shortened port times. I will definitely write them as well. I would love to add that on, but I agree that the price is a bit too high under the circumstances. Please keep us informed if you hear anything!
