Great IDEA Terri! However... how shall we proceed? I could offer to set up a series of upload albums which would be password protected and closed to the public. I could allow you access to my account for pick and choose - and downloading. However, I would be reluctant to allow general public access. Doing so would involve zero cost to everyone to contribute images. Here's a test album I set up for uploading only... itcurrently has ONE image which I uploaded. Does anyone want to try iuploading? If so ... then pay attention to activiate the UPLOAD TOOL so you can select images in mass to manipulate and up-load. And, of course, for testing purposes you need not upload in mass - only activate the tool to see how it works for you. Here is the link to the test album... ttp://www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l=nma4cnc&P=TOAL&AID=5070349&T=1
Well.... Although this would be OK to UPload to ... I think for many of us to DOWNLOAD pictures in MASS would be pretty clumbersome. Even with a high speed line I've found the download rates to be maddening when dealing with more then a few hundred... let alone the 1000s I would expect from a dozen or more contributors from among the 500 or so neighbors gathered.
That said... this is a BIG PROJECT ... one worthy of not a CD for reproduction and sharing... rather I would expect a DVD to be needed - depending on how agressively we cull images for general circulation.
I think it would be best to offer a CD or DVD after Terri chops and edits it. And if the job is too big to manage Terri I would be happy to help with some of the load. I would have no problem sharing - burning and sending out. It would help if we had Self addressed mailers from those interested in receiving a DVD though. I need nothing for materials. And I know... there are still a few folks waiting for a CD or DVD from me now.... Lil' G and Tracy... I have not forgotten. I've just been off balance and shall get to it soon. Those images from the 11 niter need a look before I brun and circulate - and I had a hard drive problem which I resolved a couple months back.
At any rate... if I set up an album... I can set up sub albums for each day of the cruise for folks to upload to. My account is a "resellers" account with NO SPECIFIED storage limit. IE, I have unlimited capacity at the site - however, in thoery I could be asked to limit my use of capacity someday.
As previously stated... I have an account with unlimited capaicity... however, as a group we need to decide how we want to use this community photo site. My current impression was that Terri would collect and cull images from all contributors - then offer a DVD or CD for folks. I would be happy to assist if necessary. I recommend we have folks interested in receiving a DVD or CD - submit SASE mailers. The post office has free Priority mail packages for free - just add postage. This sounds perfect and is the step I would find burdonsome. Selecting and buring to CD or DVD is not a problem for me - and I would be OK to donate the media and time. Or Terri, if you feel we should charge a token fee for materials that's fine too.... i figure each DVD is perhaps $0.25? I dunno anymore... I got a couple DVDR spindles for near nothing - so I could handle 50 or 100 easy. WOW.... what am I saying.... to burn 50 DVDs would take a while... whew!
Wow! Lots of good ideas on this photosharing concept.
I would suggest that we don't use anyones "personal" account for this. If there was some sort of TOS violation (that's the Terms of Service that you agree to without reading everytime) I would hate to see someone lose any personal storage.
I, personally, would vote for both methods, a CD/DVD and a sharing site. I think the CD/DVD option is important for some of the more technologically challenged among us.
There are a lot of good sites for this kind of stuff and most will give you an address to send photos from your webcam to the sharing site. This address also works from an e-mail client. So you could send an e-mail to the address and the photos get saved to the account. Hence (very lawyerly word...LOL) there would be no need to share the password.
The main question would be whether the site allows full size downloads to anyone without the username/password combo. Some sites like Flickr ($25)and Smugmug ($40)do. The other issues would be maximum file size (key for printing photos) and overall storage limits.
The really cool thing about this is we don't need to decide until July or August.
I will try to put together a comparison chart of the various services Photobucket, Flickr, Smugmug, Dotphoto, etc. and we can banter it about some.
Terri, do you have the capability of doing DVD burns if the size exceeds CD capacity?
Guess its time to watch the clearance rack at Target for DVD and CDs....
