Disney involved in 2 GardenWalk hotels
The entertainment giant would operate and staff two hotels but not own them, sources say.
By Dave McKibben
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

August 30, 2007

Almost a decade ago, the Disney Co. did nearly everything it could to stop the GardenWalk mall from being built, denigrating it as a tacky, traffic-snarling eyesore. Now that the upscale outdoor mall is on the verge of opening, it appears Disney wants a piece of the action.

The entertainment giant plans to operate two hotels in the massive Katella Avenue project across the street from Disney's planned third park and near California Adventure, according to a Disney insider and another source familiar with the project.

Bill Stone, GardenWalk's developer, would not confirm or deny the report.

"Times have changed, Disney has changed, its management has changed," said Stone, a San Diego-based developer who has been involved with the project since 1999. "They once viewed us as competition. But we really do complement each other."

Al Lutz of the fan website MiceAge.com reported Tuesday that two of the four new hotels Disney plans in the Anaheim Resort District would be in GardenWalk. He wrote that one would be a moderately priced "family hotel" with rooms having themes including Disney or Pixar characters. The other would be smaller and more luxurious, similar to a "big city W Hotel," Lutz wrote. The hotels would have a total of 866 rooms.

Disney would provide the licensed use of its name and characters and hire employees to operate and manage the facilities, according to the website. Lutz said the arrangement would be unique because Disney would not own the property.

A person familiar with GardenWalk confirmed that Disney would operate the hotels.

Disney spokesman Rob Doughty declined to confirm that his company was involved with GardenWalk.

"It's a rumor, and we don't comment on rumors," he said.

The website's report came as a surprise to Councilwoman Lucille Kring, who was on the council in the late 1990s when Disney and other business owners vehemently opposed the 20-acre retail mall, then called Pointe Anaheim.

"It does make you scratch your head," said Kring, who is opening a wine bar in GardenWalk. "They were so against it, and now they are embracing it."

Eight years ago, Disney officials argued that Pointe Anaheim would have gaudy signs, inadequate parking and poorly designed traffic patterns that would conflict with Anaheim's mission to create a visually appealing district.

But days before the City Council unanimously approved the project, Disney officials dropped their opposition when Pointe Anaheim agreed to limit signs, increase parking and change traffic routes.

After several false starts, a name change and an economic downturn caused in part by the Sept. 11 attacks, GardenWalk is within months of opening. The first of about 80 restaurants and shops will debut from November to January, including Roy's of Hawaii, Cheesecake Factory, McCormick & Schmick's Grill and P.F. Chang's.

The shopping area, which will include movie theaters, a bowling alley/nightclub and a fitness center, is expected to open in May. A 400-unit time share-condo project and the Disney hotels should be completed by late 2009 or 2010.

Plans call for the family hotel to be on the southern tip of the 20-acre mall near most of the restaurants. The more exclusive hotel would be built on the northern end near the Heat Ultra Lounge and Bar Louie nightclubs.

Sorry, had to use 3 programs to create (recreate) the map everynight. I see that I lost the label for the sea day between Cartagena and Aruba and then the sea day after Aruba. I will recreat a final one tonight when I get home from work. I agree, too much rum :drinking1 or nutmeg.

You did an amazing job:thumbsup2
We really enjoyed it as well.

NATIONAL PARK -- The body of the West Deptford teen who went missing in the Delaware River Wednesday night was recovered Saturday after one of the boy's family members spotted it on the shoreline from a family-owned boat south of No Name Island.

Rescue workers recovered the body of Ryan Lewis, 17, at 1:28 p.m. between the Woodbury Creek and the inlet at Riverwinds, according to Dennis Kappler, Public Information Officer for the National Park Fire Department.

According to Kappler, emergency workers vigorously continued their search efforts... "to bring Ryan back to the family so they could have closure."

The teenager, a June graduate of West Deptford High School, was last seen around 9 p.m. Wednesday about 20 feet from the Beach Hill shoreline. He had gone into the river to aid three friends whose boat became stuck on a sandbar near No Name Island, a patch of sand and trees 200 yards from the shore, at low tide.

Lewis' family has not released a comment.

I've been praying that they would find him.

Andy, Ryan was obviously a hero in every sense of the word & like Arlene said...what can you possibly say during a time like this? I'm sure you, family, & friends feel the same way! Just know that you are all thought of during this extremely difficult time! Send Angelina our best! :grouphug:

HEEELLLLLOOOOO EVERYONE -

I'm Back - well sorta anyway, I am off the Magic finally and am sitting in my DVC villa in Old Key West.

Lots to DIS about and lots to say but don't want to start off with a sour taste in your mouths.

I had a blast. Loved just about every minute of it and am happy for most of the experiences.

Meet both Capt Jacks and must say that OURS is the best!!! Not to mention Pirate Swann which TOTALLY fooled me in her wig. She's got short hair. Tia Dama - AWESOME AWESOME now I must get us a great costume - in just under 1 year!

We should be here in Orlando until Tuesday night. Hopefully I'll get to post some of my "experiences" but stayed tuned to my blog, where I will dish names and thoughts.

OK - just had to check in. The family flew in on a red-eye and are sleeping - DH is snoring away in the bedroom and I am in the kitchen - BTW, these are REALLY nice. Not sure if I want to sleep or stay moving. The floor is still moving and rolling but hopefully it will stop sometime Monday. ROTFL

Talk to you all later

Andy - Stephane says hi! :yay: and he DOES remember you!

Later all - on to check with my other threads!

Welcome home to all our travelers! Glad you brought the Magic and yourselves home safe and sound. Can't wait to read all about your adventures.

Thanks for taking us on a virtual TOAL Roger. I'm sorry that's over but now we have the REAL one to look forward to!

So, in the good news department, the office manager (who I've already interviewed with) and I are trying to convince the two principal architects at her firm that they should take a chance on me & let me help them with their accounting...

We've won over one of the principals & she's working on the other one. I've come up with some good arguements for her to use & I'm optimistic that within a month I wlll be better situated. Either I'll be making enough money to actually support the 3 of us OR I'll be making enough money to scrape by and I'll have 4 weeks of vacation a year. Either way would be fine with me.

Thank you all for the positive energy you've put out on my behalf - Keep up the positive thinking & I'll let you know how it all turns out.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed for you!!:rolleyes1

Well, we weren't selling beer TO the Cub Scouts :rotfl: .

Actually, we kept our affiliation hush-hush because selling alcohol is not really in keeping with Scouting (and now that I am committee chair for our Troop, I have to be careful of such things). The Jaycees run a 'beer tent' and organizations send volunteers and you get a cut of the sales based on the number of people you provide and hours worked.

But the group did get free beer at the end of the night.

Why does that not surprise me that you volunteer for a 'Beer Tent' though it is hush- hush!!!:lmao: :lmao: :cool1: :lmao: :lmao:

Stace: Congrats on the wireless.:cheer2: Chuck got it for me but I haven't used it yet. Actually waiting for him to show me how.:confused3 My DD knows more about a computer then me, it's sad I tell ya. She laughs at me when I remind her that when I was in High School we had to take a typewriter class and it was the manual kind.:rotfl2:

Cheryl: We will make it to your neck of the woods again someday. Just think around festival time next year we will be getting back from our cruise.:goodvibes

Debi: You can always tell your BIL to go to festival and he can take pictures. I didn't even realize how close we lived to Naperville. It's a very nice area.

I know we will get together before winter!!! :yay: I hibernate in the winter.:rolleyes1 I do not like to leave the house til spring.:rotfl2:

Welcome Home Capt'n!!! Can't wait to hear about your adventures!!! :thumbsup2

This is a 10 Layer cake just for Lil' Grumpy!!!!

pirate: ing..

Met up with Monica and her mom and Chris this morning at DTD. Had a great teeny meet.. Spent a few hours til they had to get back to the airport...................They also booked the 5 nighter next year as well. I snapped a shot of the 3 of them just before they left. All I can say is if I had just gotten off 15 day, I would not have looked so good........................ Glad they left when they did as the sky has been rumbling since we left......
