Pamela....I would recommend option C--A paver patio. We have a wood deck off of our house (made of Thomsonized PT wood), and I hate it! I have to seal it every year. And we used the composite decking for hand rails, and I don't think that looks good anymore either. We put in a paver patio a few years ago off of the deck, and I love it! No maintenance! We plan to rip out the deck in a couple of years, and put another paver patio in it's place. If you want it to last, I say that is the way to go.

Hey M! :wave2: I have 2 pictures of your neighbor in my wallet! And sadly, nothing else!

O agree about the Pavers ....we Just had our Driveway ripped out and had Pavers done on our driveway and walkway and they are great ...Love them

I'd love pavers too but unfortunately the technology doesn't exist to levitate them 10' in the air. Ground level is off our basement (which is mainly a storage/laundry area at the moment.)

Our decK was only ever on the 7-10 yr plan anyway as i plan to move further out once my DD gets out of HS. Just adding it for our enjoyment and then resale.

Oh yes....I saw the pictures. I bet it looks awesome in person. I'd love to do that to our driveway some day also.

Hazel was on her way home from her Ladies Night Out at the church last night and she called to let me know she saw gas at 2.459 a gallon. I told her to fill the car up, she said we still had half a tank, I said I don't care, fill the car up....... The gas station around the corner from was still selling gas at 2.659 yesterday.

That's the best price I've heard about in I don't know how long.

That might be worth a ride over to NJ. Of course once you add in the gas to get there, bridge tolls, time, etc......

Hi all! Been MIA lately. Have a great time at WDW and than last week got a sinsus infection. Went to the doctor to head it off, but it didn't work! I hate it when my equilibrium gets knocked off. Life is an adventure when your walking on the bias! :lmao:

Hope everyone is doing well. Stay cool it is going to be a hot one today.

Glad to hear you had a great birthday trip. Get well soon! We're heading down on Sunday and I just started with a cold on Monday, too. I'll be chugging the Nyquil for a few days.

Okay ...2 weeks to go until we leave for Barcelona for the Med Repo and Panic is starting to set in ...We havent started to pack yet , My Sweet Melissa's Pirate costume still being sewn ....errrrr Still waiting for DS's tux to come back from getting some alterations ....And I havent got my Mag signs done yet ....Well the good thing is that the Facial hair is coming in Just fine ...LOL

pirate:

Ya gotta love a pirate with priorities! Have a great trip Captain!

It's a good thing I don't have any stress in my life. My brother Pete called me around 11am asking if I had heard from my mom. I told him no, then asked why. Pete told me that my mom had just had a car accident and totaled her car. My mom got a little banged up and shaken up but no serious injuries were reported. I got to talk to my mom a few minutes ago and she said that left knee went into the dashboard. She was still at the scene of the accident when I called and the police were still there getting their report, so I couldn't talk to her for very long. Once I know more, I'll let everyone know. In the meantime, please send prayers, good thoughts and :wizard: her way. Thanks so much, you guys are the best!!!

Andy, keeping your Mom in our prayers!:grouphug:

You mean you can't just get your Harry Potter wand out, and take care of that? :goodvibes

That would be one heck of a retaining wall though, wouldn't it?

:grouphug: Andy, hope all is well with VerandahGran. I pray it really is as minor as she's letting on. If she's anything like my mom, they tend to downplay things so us kids won't worry. Too late, we already worry! Hoping to continue through the posts and see some good news.

I'm still alive. We've been sitting on the floor and sleeping on air mattresses for 10 days now. Our 'stuff' will finally be here tomorrow. We like our house, we love our neighborhood. We are close to Chesapeake Bay, lots of trails and a dog park. George Washington is our neighbor. Other than that - you can just take the rest of this place! Good golly is it hot. And crowded. I just cringe every time someone tells me that their commute is "only" and hour. UGH! DH started work and s it, we pretty much knew that would happen.

The boys seem to like it here but they are a bit lonely. DS8 randomly became obsessed with playing lacrosse about 2 months ago. I have no idea where it came from, but we're in the right place for it now. He's going to a lacrosse day camp all next week. DS7 chose a drama camp (he's our diva) At least they won't have to sit around and watch me unpack all next week.

I skimmed enough to see there is a new random $100 per person tax on TOAL. Lovely. I guess I'm going to have to get me one o'them nifty job thingies I've heard so much about lately.

I've had a few interviews that seem to have gone well, now I wait...

Anyway, I came into the library to pay bills & I wanted to pop in and say "Hi"
My goal is to have the wireless network set up in the house in time for chat next week!

Nice to see ya M. I've been thinking about you and your family. Glad things are starting to settle down for ya.....at least somewhat.

I have also seen argument elsewhere that DCL is still overbooked on this TOAL and is hoping people cancel over this.....

Might be a stretch, but who knows...:confused3

Although if people are starting to get room assignments, it would tend to go against that argument...

I honestly think this might be a plan. But then I do tend to think conspiracy . Just the paranoid side I live with :lmao:

I didn't clarify whether it was official word or not, but I am not with DU, I'm with a different TA, and still got informed of the $100 increase. So it's not just DU.

Me too.

Who would've thunk it. An attorney stealing :rotfl2:

DH got another shot in the knee but this is a shortlived cure. He needs to talk to our other GP to discuss whether he will allow him to have the surgery.
So far no rain today. Took off to take him to his appointment and am officially on vacation.

Hi M - Was just wondering how you all were doing getting settled into your new digs.

Andy - sorry about your Mom - PD & prayers for her.

It must be something w/the sun & moon & stars. Last night my FIL (89) was rushed to emergency w/possible heart attack. DH & I went to be w/MIL (86) until 3am. FIL was admitted and is undergoing tests. His health is failing, he has dementia and his quality of life is deteriorating. My MIL is so stressed she is becoming very frail.

Life is full!!

Andy, so sorry to hear about your mom

We have a state-wide grocery store that's been giving us coupons for money off of gas depending on how much we purchase. Up to $50 you get 10 cents off a gallon up to 12 gallons, $100 = 20 cents off, up to 40 cents off! And now prices are under $3.00 a gallon!! Yesterday I got a 30 cents off coupon. That really helps!!

Love the artificial stuff! Easier to work with than wood, doesn't warp, doesn't need maintenance, no bugs, .......

Hi Pamela....my DH built our 300 sf deck mostly himself over late fall/early winter '05.... (digging foundations, concrete, lumber, everything) It was pretty challenging because it is off of our kitchen and 10 ft above ground level.

I think Cedar will weather pretty good.

We bought our regular P/T wood at Lowes and i am really NOT impressed by how it's weathering. I've heard from many (builders included) that when they switched how they treat lumber 3 yrs ago....The new stuff is not doing well. (twisting/cracking/bowing) I have several boards that i'd love to replace already. i know we need to look into sealing it this year and i'll see how that goes.

As for composites.... My neighbor has that kind. His was done about a year before ours and doesn't look that great right now (faded, etc) but it's not warping at least. I was thinking of replacing at least the top of our railing with the composite since ours seems to be twisting so bad.My DFil replaced his stair treads to his porch with a composite and some of it has split in half already too.

Wow - DISers are great people! I really wish we could build it out of stone, but it just isn't really feasable. We live on a hill and have a lot of grade issues. The deck will range from 18" above ground to nearly 5'. Do to other issues, it isn't possible to retain around that area. There is a paver patio and a bunch of walkways that are part of the project - but one portion pretty much needs to be a deck.

Tom - sounds like you really like the artificial stuff! Have you used any particular brand?

GoofyForLife - It sounds like you've had bad luck with all the options! :sad2: My DH will also do the whole thing himself - he has done nearly all the renovation on our 100+ year old house. He isn't thrilled with the new pressure-treated lumber either - but there really isn't much choice with that...

Pamela (pdarrah)

Pamela (pdarrah)

I couldn't remember the names if I tried (of course if I went to Home Depot or Lowes, could look it up, but that would be work...), have used a couple different types

sorry to be a little late.
Thanks for the belated wishes- appreciate it. :)

ITA with Joel.....No way they left those charges off. They knew that some people would be paying in full right away (as several on this thread have already done) and could no longer charge them. At least by adding what the current tax/fees were, they got something out of them.

I think they (DCL) are making a profit off of this, and they don't really care if someone cancels, because they have so many waiting to take their spot at a much higher price.
I have to agree that my gut feeling is that they just don't care if someone cancels. They can do what they want and if people cancel- it just makes it easier for them later on since they apparenlty overbooked... it takes care of the extras for them. :( It's a win/win situation for them- they make a profit and lose the extras they couldn't really get on the ship anyway vs. losing money to try to make people happy to get off the ship since they didn't have room for them anyway.

I'm not with DU and my TA has made NO mention of increasing the onboard credit to offset the additional charges- just sent an email about the increase then sent new confirmation emails with the additional price added on. If DCL continues to add more costs- we'll end up being one of the ones to cancel. This is already a TOAL in more ways than one (one being that it's so expensive and we're literally saving for 2yrs to go on this trip!) and if they keep adding more costs- we may not be able to afford it no matter that we saved for years. KWIM? :(

Another thing that bugs me is that it's so booked solid it's not like we can change our rooms to less expensive rooms. We went with one verandah and one cat 11 so that this time we'd have a verandah and all that.. but with the price so high and now additional costs, I'm beginning to wish we'd just gone with gty to get the cheapest price possible so we could be SURE to still go on this cruise! they may "price" us out where we end up not able to go and then upgrading (for free) others to our more expensive room. Is that what they really want?

Thanks!

Oh no!
I hope she's okay.. many prayers sent your way!

Oh yes....I saw the pictures. I bet it looks awesome in person. I'd love to do that to our driveway some day also.
Oh I must have missed the photos! I wish I could see them!

Just to go along with the gas conversation- around here it's running close to $3 and I'm in Texas where it's not usually as high as many of the 'higher gas cost' states. It zoomed up really fast a couple of months ago. I get discouraged and bummed everytime I think about how much gas costs (for vehicles and home and how it affects electric and other costs as well). It really does affect more than just the price of the gas that goes in my vehicle- yanno? Things are so expensive nowadays...
:headache:

IMO...I can't imagine they would have done that. They knew there would be some kind of transition fee. I talked to Disney when I made my reservations on the DCL website about the taxes/port fees because I was using it to negotiate with my TA some onboard credits. I was told our taxes/port fees were $1,412 and commissionable fare was $4,200 for a total of $5,612 for 2A and 2C.

I still haven't seen this charge show up on my TA ressie, so I hesitate to contact DCL to complain about a fee that I haven't really been charged yet. I have not received any letters or notices from Disney either, but assume the charge is going to show up eventually. The extra $400 takes the total of our taxes/fees to $1,812, or $453/person. I tried pricing a couple of other cruise lines on their Panama taxes/fees and their's were around $300/person with more ports of call.

Joel, I have the same charge. 453.24 pp. I guess some agents show the fees in depth?
