I have been loving these posts! DH is an AVID gardener and boy is he tough on the garden tools. He even managed to break a stainless-steel shovel and fork that were given to him because they were supposed to be "indestructable"!

Hi Tink.....

Your dad and i both work in planning.....

Do you use myspace at all? Devon - my DD is away right now but i'm sure she'd love to chat. I'll have her send you a pm when she gets back...
i forget what her DIS id is.... Something to do with horses though...

PS....She loves tink too.

The rake saw what he did to the shovel, hoe and axe and ran. Its now in the implement protection program.:lmao: :lmao:

My DH broke the tip off a digging/pry bar while trying to break up rock while digging the foundations for our deck.

Does that count?

Ok, I guess I should post and explain some of the durm und strang regarding the website.

1) In the process of transferring information from Lisa to me, some personal information was inadvertantly posted on the website (under secure access) that fellow posters had asked previously not to be published. This caused them great concern. I've apologized to them personally in private and am doing so again in public. It was a mistake to assume that just because people mailed their information in six months ago that meant it was okay to post it.

2) There was a misunderstanding regarding who was given access to personal information and who was not. I hope I've cleared that up, but I will make a statement on this again. The only people who had access to the personal information on the website are those who provided all of their personal information.

3) One of the reasons the personal information was removed after six hours was because I could not get IDs to everyone who had their info listed and it is not right for your info to be listed and yet you don't have access, so it all was removed. I was being overly ambitious and thought I could get all of the IDs out Tuesday.

I am married and have three kids, so I've given up on trying to make everyone happy a long time ago. I have also learned that trying to enforce rules on others just upsets people so I'd rather we have some consensus as a group.

In a perfect world, there would be no logins or passwords and the site would be open to all. But since there will be some level of personal info on the site (at least in terms of cruise plans), some privacy policy is required, especially if we post information about our children. We can be extremely paranoid or exceedingly stupid. None of us are at either extreme, so I am going to make a separate post with some proposals to see what you think.

Due to some personal stuff, I will likely be absent from the boards for a little while but will try to check in to get opinions. Tom31b is also an administrator of the site now and he can delegate others as well.

Thanks,
J. R.

Crew -
Are we getting too spun up here about making rules for access to the website? As many of us have said many times - the vast majority of us are cool folks who would not abuse the relationships we've built here.

Yes, we've had a bad experience. It's been dealt with. Do we want now want to be so fearful of it happening again that we become restrictive and scare off any newcomers who didn't experience the problem? They will see us as exclusive, and not open to new people.

Remember, the purpose here is to facilitate connecting with others.

No one has said anything in particular, but I'm getting a definite feeling from the board that we're trying to cover for the 1% of the potential problems (and turning off a lot of people) rather than focusing on the 99% of the positives.

JR - as far as I'm concerned. Make up the rules for the website, and we'll abide by them. Those that are uncomfortable can choose not to list their information, or give a limited set. But, if you try to make everyone happy - it's a loosing game.

My two cents.

Good morning everyone!

Thank you so much for spending so much time on this, JR -- I'm sorry that it's also become so complicated. Thanks to Tom as well for administering the site.

Ok, so here is the post on proposals for the website. PM me with any concerns you don't want to share publicly.

1) Access. I propose the following areas of the site be freely available to anyone on the Internet with no user name or password:

a) Itinerary
b) Thread Info
c) Useful Info

My rationale is all of this info has previously been posted here on the DIS and anyone can come to the DIS and view this info without needing a user ID or password.

2) All other areas will be password protected because they will contain personal information. Understand that my reason for doing this is I am concerned about random strangers finding out family details and travel plans. Unfortunately, knowing someone's first name, birthday, etc. can be enough to start stealing someone's identity. I am not doing this to exclude people for any other reason.

Access will be given if you meet the following criteria:

a) Have a valid DIS ID (so we have at least one way of keeping you informed since e-mail addresses can change)
b) Meet the minimum requirements for sending and receiving PMs from the DIS (since this will be the method used to communicate to avoid publishing e-mail addresses where spammers can harvest them)
c) Have provided the information requested on the main page of the site. (We will NOT publish all of this info on the website but in order to be fair, we can't allow you to see someone else's personal info without providing yours in the same way we will not share yours if you don't have access).

Some people have had their personal information removed and access denied to previous versions of the website. I don't know the reasons but I am not sure I can give access to these people. This is causing me a lot of personal turmoil and would welcome your thoughts here.

Some have suggested that prior to having access to the 'personal' parts of the site, you have to have posted to this thread a specific number of times. Let me know if this is how you want to do it. The general information areas would be open to all.

3) Personal Information will be limited to what you are willing to share. I have deleted everything I received from Lisa and will start over with the personal info. I am going to ask that you send in all of the info requested.

If you do NOT tell me what you want displayed, I will display only DIS ID, adults' names, childrens' gender and age (DS13) and hometown.

Otherwise, I will display whatever you ask. Last names will never be shown and hometowns will be sanitized to just major city/state (e.g. "Chicago, IL" for me.

4) We will be looking for people to serve as authors and editors and reviewers of content. Particularly in making sure that links work after they are posted, typing up content and sending it to be posted, etc. Hopefully we can find new site administrators as well. The site uses the Mambo CMS, so if you have any familiarity with that, please let me know.

Ok, anyway, that's the post. I will probably not be around for a little while. Boy Scout camp, daughter's Vacation Bible School and some personal issues will take precedence for me in the coming week.

JR, thank you again for all your work.

I will do what I can to keep the site moving. If you want your and your families birthday's posted, add it to the calendar and I will approve as quick as possible.

I agree with the sections that JR is proposing to be public.

Other wise, please consider this. We have about 14 months until the trip. NOTHING, let me repeat, NOTHING on this website needs to be done today, this minute, right now, etc. Lets take our time and discuss things in a rational manner.

One of the really cool/great things about this website is that the content was provided by YOU (each and everyone of YOU). JR did the programming, but the links, the subject matter, the cool pictures, etc. were all pulled from the thread. WE as a group can be proud of this site.

Let's enjoy!

JR... great work on your proposals! I vote with the majority consensus and would like to officially bestow upon you the Fabulous Mickey Bar with Sprinkles award for selfless dedication and service to our little community. News at 11...

And now below is a little bit of chuckling whimsy I copied from the "DCL photo of the day" thread on the main board...

I LOVE this one!!! And the look on your other daughter's face is worth a million bucks ;)

Thanks!

I still look at it and feel like I'm right there again "hamming" it up! I've reshot this a few times but it has not come out as good as this FIRST time of doing it. And on another note - I wanted to thank everyone else who has contributed to this thread and kept it alive. I come here every now and then to get some fresh images of sailing with DCL - and it is often so entertaining and pleasant here. I've only posted a few dozen images on this thread - but eventually I'll get around to doing more. My extrenal HD failed and that is where a lot of my images are stored - especially my most recent sailing - an 11 nite southern last september with 6,700+ images. Yeah - I shot 600+ images a day ... I'm a nut! So just yesterday I bought some parts which may enable salvaging my data from the exteral HD. And all I have to say/share in closing is... never buy a Western Digital external hard drive!

Dont drop her!

That's cute.....I think little sister is concerned about what dad is doing:confused3 ...

What a GREAT, FUN picture -- thanks for sharing!!!:lmao: :lmao:

CaptainCrash doing his Michael Jackson impersonation! But, he looks so much better!

Yeah, I forgot the birthday part. Add your birthdays to the calendar for those of you who have access. Also you can add in any other special events like anniversaries, divorces, day you get out of prison, etc.

And I will echo Tom's sentiments. We wanted to get a website up to be able to avoid losing track of all the great information already posted inside 66000 posts of fluff, but the rest can come later. I'll open up the 'public' areas later today and hopefully that will eliminate some of the concern from people being shutout because of low post counts b/c getting IDs out has taken much longer than I thought...

JR, thank you again for all your work.

Thanks again to both of you for getting this together. Once I get back from the big Med trip Sept 1 I'd be happy to help out by reading, typing, checking links, etc. It's unlikely that I would have time before then, but as you point out, the trip is a long time from now.

Everything you propose sounds fine to me -- I really have no idea what to say about people having been banned, how many posts to make you a legitimate poster, etc., etc. It seems unnecessarily complicated (and potentially excluding in nature) to me, but then again I'm not privy to all the details of how some of these concerns have come about. I leave all these decisions to consensus, and will go with what is decided . . .

Yeah, I forgot the birthday part. Add your birthdays to the calendar for those of you who have access. Also you can add in any other special events like anniversaries, divorces, day you get out of prison, etc.

My DH broke the tip off a digging/pry bar while trying to break up rock while digging the foundations for our deck.

Does that count?

I break tools all the time. But DW and I are tied with killing one lawnmower each! Oh yeah, the weedwacker's just about dead too, but that one has been a long, slow, agonizing decline that we're both responsible for. Maybe someone should get our lawn equipment in the protection program too.

Hi Diane: I forgot you had a DD who is Brooke's age. Any chance of them exchanging emails? Brooke is very shy but it would be so good for her to get to know people now. Belated :bday: to Taylor.:cake: :dance3:

I always miss the good emails.:rotfl2:

Tina my DD is also very shy but I'll PM w/ my email address. I don't know how much she'll write since she always asks me, "What do I say?" but hopefully they'll get to know each other a little.

Happy Belated Birthday to Taylor (DD allshookup)!!!!

Thanks Tom! :goodvibes

My DS has that on his IPOD video. It's his favorite Weird Al video because of Star Wars of course!

J. R. I don't know what to say about restricting people. I agree with the others that we want to be welcoming, but as you know there is some very nasty stuff said about some elsewhere & I can understand feeling threatened. Whether you want to call it lurking or reading or whatever, I understand members from this group don't always have the time or inclination to post & again I don't want to exclude them, but they are not the only ones lurking here on a regular basis & it's those others that run back & post things we've said elsewhere that creep me out. What is the solution? I don't know, but I already PMd you my 2 cents regarding personal info due to the nature of my DH's job, but if you are not including last names & only major cities, then I'm okay with allowing everyone access.

I just want to clarify 3? Are you saying we should resend all info the WAY we want it displayed or all info & then let you know WHAT we want displayed? I ask because this quote makes it sound as if you want ALL info regardless of whether it will be displayed or not...correct? "Have provided the information requested on the main page of the site. (We will NOT publish all of this info on the website but in order to be fair, we can't allow you to see someone else's personal info without providing yours in the same way we will not share yours if you don't have access)."

Also do you want pics resent?

J. R. & Tom....thanks again for all your hard work! I am sorry I am unfamiliar with Mambo CMS, but I am familiar with Perry Como's old hit, Papa loves Mambo! Sorry....I.....must....try....to....resist sing along! :rolleyes1

Also I hope everything is okay on the personal front! Take care!

Our family is back from our 10 day commando (no we had underwear) whirlwind tour of WDW/Wonder. We had a great time but everyone is tired. We we all happy to sleep in our own beds last night. We were disappointed that we did not meet up with Tom31B while we were there but trying to see 4 parks in 4 days, dealing with Disney transportation, lack of cell phone signals, and inability of accessing the Internet from CBR. Overall we had a fantastic time but obviously tried doing too much in a short period of time. We could not have had better weather while we were there. This is something that I worried about before leaving. Only rained (hard rain) once on us at Epcot and that was only for about 45mins.

I have missed so much here with the launch of the new website. We would like to thank JR and Tom for their hard work on this great website. JR the site looks great and you have our full support in the handling of security. What you have posted sounds like a very logical approach to this problem. If I can make a suggestion on something that I would find useful with the pirate list is to have DIS user name/real first name of posters for chat. Many of us know most peoples names but occasionally someone new pops in and we do not know their names.
