Good Morning!

Humid and overcast here today. Yech. I hate humidity!!! Hope all of our DIS friends in FL and GA are okay with all of the wild fires!

I've never said this but I have heard it said that Florida is a suburb of New York City. :confused3
Joisey too! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: (I can say that b/c I'm a native Joisey Girl. Complete with hairspray and bubblegum.)

My DS Devin has the same thing. Tuesday on the way to the dentist he tells me his neck hurts and it feels like his bone is sticking out. The wonderful mother I am (very easily distracted) forgot to even see what he was talking about until dinner last night. Just the left side swollen and hurt to the touch. Just an hour later 101 fever. Today the gland is smaller but hard like a rock. Says doesnt hurt much now. We have an 11:15am appointment, since he just had strep 2 1/2 weeks ago he needs to be rechecked again!!!! His strep test came back clear last Wednesday.
Maureen, make sure that they not only do the quick strep test, but the send out one to the lab as well. I had the same problem with a swollen and sore neck last year. No fever, no sore throat. Quick test was negative, but the doc put me on antibiotics anyway. Good thing too, b/c a few days later I got a call from the nurse that the count was through the roof and that I'd be on augmentin for at least 3 weeks. On the flip side, DD had what you describe for Devin a couple of years ago. Took her to the ER (it was Sunday) because I was freaked out that half of her neck looked like it belonged on a linebacker. Diagnosis...infected lymph gland.

OK ladies, make a trip back to the salon for a polish change. My place does it for $5. It is much better than hating your color for 2 or 3 weeks. :goodvibes
Or, option B which is my favorite...a french maincure. Matches with everything. ;)

When I lived in Tejas I noticed a few of the KFC locations had collard greens. The ones in the more, uh, "affluent" areas had green beans instead
:scared: Collards...that is one thing that makes MIL living with us more trying. She's a Georgia Peach and loooooooves her greens. My house stinks for days, because that's how long you're supposed to cook them. P.U.:scared:

I can take it. In my 25 years of parenting, I've won the Mean Mom award more than once. ;)
Oh, me too Stace. Lots of times and she's only 8. I tell her that she needs to let me know if I'm doing my job right because I stay up late at night thinking of new and creative ways to torment her and I want to make sure that I'm doing my job.

There will be new homey's on Captain's Dining with ya (me, me, me, me me!):rotfl:
Me too too too too too!!!

High-waters! Hated those things with a passion.
Hated them too but not as much as bell bottoms. :headache:

Brack and Jonesing...hope you both are feeling a lot better!!!:flower3:

party: :bday: party: Happy Birthday Disney Sweetie!

And, by the way, it's my 1000 post!!!:cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Hey - quick ? for anyone out there - for traveling in the US - would you all recommend traveling with Passport - or is Driver's License really all I need in the Continental US?

I usually travel to take a cruise and therefore always take the passport - I'm having a FABULOUS weekend at WDW and it just seems weird to only be taking my DL. What would you all do? :sad2:

When I travel domestically, I NEVER take my passport. I use my D/L as well as a military ID. The passport is not necessary and should it ever get lost it would be a major pain the in butt to replace!

:wave2: all!

Wish me :pixiedust: I am on my way to WDW ( from CA) and also traveling solo for the first time in almost ....well since my young, independant days. I am a nervous traveler and hope that all goes well. I'll see if I can DIS away from home. DH is making me travel with laptop, Magellan and all kinds of electronic gadgets - this from the same man that accused me of being a black clouds for all things electronic! :scared1: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

OK - wish me luck - I fly out at 10:44 - am spending the weekend with Pam/DisneySweetie and other fellow DISsers whom we meet on our Sept cruise - will tell her of all your well wishes.

Wish me luck - I don't do so well sometimes :sad2:

Hopefully, I will talk later!

:wave2: Bye Laura! Lots of pixiedust: and prayers that you have a smooth flight and an awesome time at WDW!!!

Solely within the US? I'd use DL or some other form of ID (I've got what, 12? 14?) Anyway, passport is still fine it's just that some people who seem to really think that checking an ID does something to enhance security <TSA rant warning> but I won't get into that </rant abated ;)> wouldn't know what to do with a passport because they'd never seen one. :sad2:

Besides, I'd have to have my DL on me if I'm renting a car....though I still show an ID that doesn't have my address to anyone who thinks it's necessary to see a piece of plastic with my mug on it.

For now, you only need the DL. But if the Real ID Act gets implemented and your State isn't compliant, your DL may not get you on an airplane. The Real ID Act will costs states billions to implement, so needless to say, there are some that are refusing, but as of some time in 2008, you will need a Real ID compliant DL to get on plane, but a passport should suffice as substitute. Until, that is, your passport expires then you will likely need a Real ID compliant DL to renew....

If you are flying to Alaska or Hawaii where you could get diverted to a foreign airport for emergency, you may want passport so you could leave airport if needed.

Morning all!
No meetings, no teleconferences, no nothing sitting on the schedule today. I am locking the office door so I can get some work done and get some stuff filed!

Play nice. See you at lunch.

Translation: My calendar is cleared so that I can secretly DIS and not be bothered by the staff...see you at lunch after I ketchup on my DIS readings and eBay watchlists ;)

Vegan couple sentenced in baby's starvation death
By GREG BLUESTEIN
The Associated Press

ATLANTA — A vegan couple were sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet consisting largely of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the mandatory sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3½ pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple were found guilty May 2 of charges including malice murder, felony murder and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

But prosecutors said the couple intentionally neglected their child and refused to take him to the doctor even as the baby's body wasted away.

"No matter how many times they want to say, 'We're vegans, we're vegetarians,' that's not the issue in this case," said prosecutor Chuck Boring. "The child died because he was not fed, period."

Although the life sentences were automatic, Sanders and Thomas begged for leniency before sentencing. Sanders urged the judge to look past his "perception" of the couple.

"I loved my son — and I did not starve him," she said.
-------------------------

I'm not going to harp on the whole Vegan thing except to ask: If they're so into this healthy way of living, why wasn't she nursing they baby? By all accounts, she's young and healthy (our old neigbors couldn't nurse and that was a big deal in NM...she had to fend off the lactation specialist telling her "They don't work!")

Follow-up story:

Mom fears son's veganism is death sentence in prison
By BETH WARREN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 05/10/07

Lamont Thomas' mother fears he may soon die by staying true to his vegan lifestyle.

The 31-year-old Buckhead resident was rail-thin, with a gaunt face and bones protruding from his neck, when he shuffled into a Fulton County courtroom Wednesday in leg and waist chains. There, a judge sentenced him to life in prison in the starvation death in 2004 of his only child, Crown.

The child's parents said they fed him organic and soy products, but doctors at Piedmont Hospital, the medical examiner and a nutritionist specializing in veganism all testified at trial that the child had been underfed, not just fed the wrong diet for an infant.

At six weeks, Crown weighed 3 1/2 pounds, and doctors could count the bones on his skeletal frame.

Carolyn Thomas defended her son, saying after the sentencing hearing: "My son was afraid all along: 'Nobody understands us.' "

The Augusta resident acknowledges that she hasn't always understood choices made by her son and his girlfriend, Jade Sanders, 27, who also received an automatic life sentence in prison for malice murder.

The grandmother said she had urged them to take Crown to a doctor for a checkup, but her son wanted to raise the baby without interference from doctors. Thomas' attorney, Brandon Lewis, said the couple worried about hospital germs.

Sanders told the judge during Wednesday's hearing: "I loved my son, and I did not starve him."

Sanders delivered Crown in the bathtub of the Buckhead apartment she shared with Thomas.

"She went through the pain of delivering herself, and they don't think that's love?" the child's grandmother said.

The first time Crown's parents took him to see a doctor was on April 25, 2004. The baby was already dead.

Thomas told the judge through tears that prosecutors had resources his court-appointed attorney didn't have.

"It takes money to disprove their theories; money we don't have," he said.

At the hospital, the parents said they fed their child organic apple juice and soy milk, which has a label warning parents not to use it as an infant food.

At trial, the couple claimed they also fed the baby some breast milk and soy milk formula.

The state's experts told the jury, which included four vegetarians, that regardless of what the couple fed the baby, Crown should have been fine if he'd been fed enough.

Fulton prosecutor Chuck Boring said the boy had a bed sore on his bottom that showed he had been neglected, left lying on his back in a soiled diaper for hours at a time.

Defense attorneys said it was a diaper rash.

Thomas and Sanders say their child was born prematurely and tiny, but he often smiled and laughed and they thought he was doing fine.

Carolyn Thomas says her son, who was already skinny, has dropped about 10 pounds in the week since his conviction. As a vegan, Thomas has a more restricted diet than vegetarians and does not eat food such as eggs, white bread, cheese, milk and meats, which are all mainstays on jail menus.

Defense attorneys plan to file motions for a new trial, but Thomas' family fears his time is running out.

Carolyn Thomas told her son's attorney: "He's not going to live much longer if he doesn't eat."

Which is fine as long as you don't want to use your Visa at WalMart! :)

I don't have a Passport. Canada is still OK. I'm not sure where you would emergency land on the way to Hawaii.

Roger that re: RealID

A few (6 or 7 I think) states have already blatantly said they will not comply with the RealID measures. Some have passed legislation barring implementation of RealID and one or two have stated they won't comply unless Uncle Sam provides full federal funding for the states' to implement the changes. I guess if enough states (or key states like in an election) refuse to comply then that's going to force some rethinking...what would happen to the economy if say 90% of NM residents can't board a plane? Probably nothing since a lot of people think it's a foreign country anyway ;) But what about 90% of WA residents? CA residents? Now you're talking about putting a serious hurt on the airline industry.

We already have a national ID card, it's called a passport! Maybe Uncle should encourage more people to get passports by lower the fees and increase the processing times :teeth: :lmao:

:) Hi all!!!:)

that sore neck gland thing is going around here too - I have it and neighbors told me their little girl woke up screaming with it the night before last!!! I don't think I have noticed my neck glands being that painful before! It was deep in my shoulders too.

the vegan parent thing: that is a case of people being wacked, not a "vegan" thing - 99.9% of vegan parents manage to raise healthy babies and children and, sadly, meat eating wacko parents have been known to abuse their children similarly...similarly, women with eating disorders have been known to rely on vegetarians diets at times...it is the disorder, not the vegetarian diet that is hurting them. 'nuf said!

anyway, everyone have a GREAT Mother's Day - in case I am not checking back in by then...have a weekend of DD's play performances and a garage sale to run...more money for TOAL!!!!!

:wizard:

Travelers on one of my other chatboards have been complaining that the airport goons in HI tend to really harrass people who present a passport rather than a DL.

Whats Real ID?????
You asked for it ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REAL_ID_Act
The REAL ID Act of 2005 is Division B of an act of the United States Congress titled Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005, Pub.L. 109-13, 119 Stat. 231, enacted 2005-05-11). This legislation was intended to deter terrorism by:
  • Establishing the national standards for state-issued driver's licenses and non-driver's identification cards; (This is the part that many have issues with)
  • Waiving laws that interfere with construction of physical barriers at the borders;
  • Updating and tightening the laws on application for asylum and deportation of aliens for terrorist activity;
  • Introducing rules covering "delivery bonds" (rather like bail bonds, but for aliens that have been released pending hearings);
  • Funding some reports and pilot projects related to border security; and
  • Changing visa limits for temporary workers, nurses, and Australian citizens.

Minimum nationwide standards for state driver's licenses or ID cards, employment, and banking
In the United States, driver's licenses are issued by the states, not by the federal government. States also issue voluntary identification cards for non-drivers. States set the rules for what data is on the card and what documents must be provided in order to obtain one. States also maintain databases of licensed drivers and ID-card holders.

Driver's License Implications

The REAL ID Act's implications for driver's licenses and ID-cards is detailed in Title II of the Act. Title II of REAL ID—“Improved Security for Driver’s License’ and Personal Identification Cards”—repeals the provisions of a December 2004 law that established a cooperative state-federal process to create federal standards for driver’s licenses and instead directly imposes prescriptive federal driver’s license standards.

After December 31, 2009, "a Federal agency may not accept, for any official purpose, a driver's license or identification card issued by a state to any person unless the state is meeting the requirements" specified in the Real ID Act. States remain free to also issue non-complying licenses and ID's, so long as these have a unique design and a clear statement that they cannot be accepted for any Federal identification purpose. The federal Transportation Security Administration is responsible for security check-in at airports, so bearers of non-compliant documents would no longer be able to travel on common carrier aircraft without additional screening. (Or enter a federal building like a courthouse where you have to show ID)

In addition, the federal Social Security Administration, (42 U.S.C. § 666(28)), requires the States to maintain a new hire directory. Employers would no longer be able to accept, or ultimately hire, bearers of non-compliant documents for employment.

Also, financial institutions are required to assist the Federal Parent Locator Service, ((42 U.S.C. § 666(17)). Financial institutions would require compliant documents from all customers. Bearers of non-compliant documents would be denied financial or banking services.

Additional federal and state agencies who will require compliant documents are listed, in part, in (42 U.S.C. § 666).

The national license/ID standards cover:
  • What data must be included on the card;
  • What documentation must be presented before a card can be issued; and
  • How the states must share their databases.

Strictly speaking, many of these requirements are not new. They replace similar language in Section 7212 of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (Pub.L. 108-458), which had not yet gone into effect before being repealed by the Real ID Act.

Data requirements
Each card must include, at a minimum, the person's full legal name, signature, date of birth, gender, driver's license or identification card number. It also includes a photograph of the person's face and the address of principal residence. (There is no provision for alternate addresses or PO boxes for judges, undercover police, victims of domsetic violence etc) It is required to have physical security features designed to prevent tampering, counterfeiting, or duplication of the document for fraudulent purposes.

It will use common machine-readable technology, with defined minimum data elements (the details of which are not spelled out, but left to the Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the Secretary of Transportation and the states, to regulate).

Documentation required before issuing a license or ID card
Before a card can be issued, the applicant must provide the following documentation:

  • A photo ID, or a non-photo ID that includes full legal name and birthdate.
  • Documentation of birthdate.
  • Documentation of legal status and Social Security number
  • Documentation showing name and principal residence address.
Digital images of each identity document will be stored in each state DMV database. (I know I really trust my local 19 year old DMV clerk to protect this information.....)

Linking of license and ID card databases
Each state must agree to share its motor vehicle database with all other states. This database must include, at a minimum, all the data printed on the state drivers' licenses and ID cards, plus drivers' histories (including motor vehicle violations, suspensions, and points on licenses). Any state that does not link its database, containing records on all drivers and ID holders, to the database of the other states loses its federal funding.

Those are the basics. More information:

good afternoon everyone! hope your day is going great....ok here!

Keep in mind that the man had a receding hairline 30 years ago. I was fascinated by the fact that he still has any hair, let alone the same style he had in 1977.

So the teeny-bopper vote kept Blake in. I'm OK with that. I think the final should be Meinda/Jordin, but if I were a betting wench, I would say Blake/Jordin.

I was surprised that he could still hit some of those high notes.:confused3
