My kids school calendar was just posted and we go back 8/18 - yup thats right the day after the cruise leaves. DH and I really wanted to do this trip since we had such a great time in 2005 so he went and met with both kids principals and explained to them about the panama canal, great learningexperience, once in a lifetime (well ok twice in 3 years -LOL) and they both agreed we should go. DD is going into 8th grade and we know a trip like this wont be possible once she is in highschool. So they will both miss the first two weeks (MS principal said really only one week of curiculum since first week dont do any work) and both principals said they would count the absences as excused so kids can make up work. I had them email me their approval so I can present to teachers at back to school night.

Both my kids are straight A students and although they may have some catchup to do - I think they will be ok. Of course I know some may not agree with this decision and thats fine.. I think the memories will outway any extra work we need to do.

Only you know what's best for your children & I'm sure they will catch right up since they are A students. Both my kids are A students too, but my only concern is they are both starting at new schools so it makes it a bit more difficult, but like anything else, I'm sure they will adjust. Plus I completely agree that this is a huge learning experience that no classroom can match! :goodvibes

You forgot the part about my son and I both having staph infections and the kid getting his science project confiscated by the Scottsdale Police Department and his Dad being threatened with 25 years for the federal offense of letting him build said science project.
Nah...no stress....

Now someone tell me I can go to Fantasyland and live there!!!

:tinker:

By the way smarty-pants...you'd better watch your back in March. I don't get mad. I get even!;)

:scared1: OMG.....what kind of project was it??

Ginny that is great your principals were understanding for you. We left Adam home in 05 due to him being on the football team--coaches aren't as understanding.

Yes that is it. The meeting time at the pier is 10am, but the tour time says 10:30. I am not sure if it is too late for the group discount because I already paid. There are 4 of us in my group (DH DS8 and DD10). It would be great if others from this thread are joining the same tour.

It may be too late, but I am glad that you will be with us.:cool1:

My son gets along better with his uncles than he does with us. Something about there being less pressure or something, I don't really know why.

Hang in there:hug:

We're pulling for you. Feel like we "know" him from the video of him getting his Wii. What a cool kid he is:goodvibes

and guess what got packed for this weekend????

the Wii......but my brother actually asked him to bring it....turns out my SIL wants one really bad, so they are going to use this as a test run

I agree with you if my kids were going into new schools then I would be concerned too. Thankfully they are both staying in the same school that they have been in for the last few years so they at least know the routine, layout, teachers etc......

Aint that the truth , thats why Dylan wont be on this cruise ....

Diane, I really hope that they just choose to go back after Labor Day so that it isn't an issue. If they do start earlier, it sounds like they would only miss the first two days of school. I know that's not ideal, but they probably won't miss too much since it's 2 days of class followed by a 4 day weekend.

I know the feeling though. We were booked in 2005 and I thought we would be OK because my school used to start after Labor Day too. I double checked after we booked, and found out that it started the Monday before. I would have missed the entire first week of classes, including the mandatory orientation, so we had to cancel, and I felt terrible about it.

I hope everything works out for you. Looking forward to meeting you and the family; and Linda and I will still be buying you a thesis drink. (Provided you get it finished before the cruise! :drinking1)

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

You beat me to it. I was going to ask the same question!

Although the sad thing is that I checked again last night, you know, just in case...

Happy Groundhog Day!

that's got to be one of the best cakes we've seen

WOW, that is crazy. Usually in our district if a child is out for medical reasons and is homebound, they would send a teacher to the home. Maybe there is a time constraint - you should contact your pucblic school and ask them about it.

We are also in the middle of getting an IEP in place which will take him out of this school, that may be why they are letting him slip by.

We just sent in our request to Los Veranos for the zip line!

Linda has a fear of heights, so I didn't push the issue. Turns out that she is more excited about doing the zip line than I am. I think she wants to face her fears and that this will be a great way to do it. I'm still a little worried about DS8 chickening out, but he seems really excited about it too.

We hope that we'll be on the 1:00 tour, but I don't know how full they are and how many people they accept. So we put 2:00 as our alternate time. If they put us on that one, maybe we'll still see some of you pirates if you're still at the bar/waterpark area after your tour. I'll let you know how we make out.

My kids are both doing the 1 pm zipline, so they should be able to cheer each other on.

:scared1: OMG.....what kind of project was it??

I was wondering the same thing! :scared1:

It's science fair time here. We had a science board taken down by the judges last year of one student, because they thought it was hazzardious!

I, too, am a Linda with a fear of heights! But I read reviews about this particlar tour on CC and people who also had this fear seemed to enjoy it. It sounds like you get used to it and are having a great time before the really high ones kick in. And I've done parasailing, and enjoyed that.

Are you doing the zip line tour too?

Did you do parasailing at Castaway Cay?

I've always wanted to do parasailing either there or at the Contemporary at WDW. I would love to have a bird's eye view of the Magic Kingdom while doing it. Since you're on the Bay Lake side of the Contemporary, I'm not sure how much you would see.

Ginny, I'm glad the prinicipals are working with your family and that you're confortable with doing so. Since you were on the last cruise, you know the educational value of experiencing these things first hand.

We took the kids out for a week last January for a cruise and their teachers were very understanding (3rd grade and twins in 1st grade) In addition to their homework, I told the teachers that I would have them keep a journal. I designed pages ahead of time, with blocks to fill in about what they did, what their favorite part of the day was, etc.

My favorite part was that I made them meet someone from a different country every day. They had a spot to write down who they spoke to, where they were from, and some things that they learned from them. This was really easy because of all of the CM's from so many different countries, and they seemed genuinely glad to share some info about their homes with the kids. The teachers were thrilled with this when we got back.

Also, the 3rd grader wrote a lot about seeing sea turtles when we went snorkeling at St Thomas. The teacher sent home a note that said the class was learning about endangered sea turtles during that week, but Zack was actually swimming with them and learning about them. I knew we made the right decision.

See you on the ship!:wave2:

Tell Torchwood to bring it on. If the Nuke is in the shape of a Rugby ball we'll get James Hook to kick it to Bristol.;)

So seriously....

Did the groundhog see its shadow today??

Chrissie

Chrissie looks like 6 more weeks of Winter. :sad2:

Pennsylvania groundhog sees six more winter weeks
Sat Feb 2, 2008 10:57am EST
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - America's most famous groundhog emerged from his burrow early on Saturday and declared that winter will last another six weeks.

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow shortly before 7:30 a.m. to the cheers of more than 30,000 people from as far away as Alaska and Texas, one of the largest crowds in the 122-year history of the event in the central Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney.

The rodent was taken out of a tree stump on a hill called Gobbler's Knob, and delivered his prognostication to William Cooper, President of Punxsutawney's Inner Circle, who organizers say is the only person in the world who can speak "groundhog-ese."

According to the tradition that may have links with the European festival of Candlemas, if the groundhog sees his shadow, it will mean six more weeks of winter. If not, there will be an early spring.

Cooper read a scroll containing the groundhog's prediction. It said: "As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me. Six more weeks of winter it will be."
