Goodness! I am really glad that the studio we are at doesn't dress the kids like that. The hip hop dance costume is below. It's not a great picture because they never stopped moving but you can see that it is not at all like what you guys have described. The song was Bet on It from HSM.

That would be the type of costume that our hip hop classes would wear... I'm trying to remeber what the boys wear.... we have one hip hop class that is only boys.

Hey folks .. just wanted to announce that we got a ROOM!!! Okay, well I guess we won't be sleeping in the lifeboats. They were getting pretty cozy . ..LOL. We'll be in Room 2108! Yeah! DH is happy that we're in the back of the ship and not way forward. Personally I am just happy to be on the ship at all.

Today was tough b/c the contract for our house fell through. I'm sure there is someone else out there that will love our house. Just ready to get this move over with.

It's been fun reading about all the scrapbookers. I did one book of our last cruise and I'm looking forward to doing this one, too. DH and the DSs LOVE reading thru the books and showing them to others. Really helps us remember those great memories!

Have a terrific night!

Don't tempt me dear.... I will have an unfortunate trip up there pretty soon.

My DGM is nearing the end of her life. They gave her last rites on Saturday but the staff at the nursing home told my dsis it's just a matter or time. She is in her late 80's and unfortunately has had pretty bad alzheimers for the past 10 yrs. She doesn't know who she is and didn't know who my grandfather even was the last few years of his life either.... She was always so nice to my Dsis and i as kids so it has hurt me to not have her know who we are or who her Great grandkids are. :worried: She'll be a better place though at least.

really sorry to hear this. My Dad has dementia (not alzheimers though) He knows that he knows me, but he doesn't know that I'm his daughter.

Thank God for that better place

Hi all ... Just got back from the gym an hour ago and all I can say is owwww!!, my body hurts ... but it is good for me .. that's what I keep telling everyone. I'm off to the doctor tomorrow to ask if she can help with my ankles this cruise. Last summer, in the Med, my ankles really swelled up. Doctor said it was water retention, but she did do an ultrasound on it, due to my history of DVT, just to be sure. I don't want this to happen again.

All this talk of dance and costumes, my dd started dancing at 3 and quit at 12. She wasn't enjoying it, and didn't like wearing all the costume, as some of them (the bodysuits especially) left nothing to the imagination. It was a hard decision for her, but I spoke to her instructor about the situation, and she told me that she could see that she had lost the joy in dance. We ended up not signing up for the year end recital, and got a refund for the last 3 months of the lessons.

I have to ask a question of the other dance parents who have been at this for years. There was a girl in DD's class who stopped coming 2 months ago. She was not there to learn the entire routine to either dance. Her mom wouldn't let her come because she wasn't doing well in school. She showed up for the pictures. She didn't come to the last class. She didn't come to the dress rehersal BUT she showed up at the recital. Would your schools have allowed her to even get on the stage? She threw DD for a loop because they moved her from No. 1 position in the tap number (different count for the opening move) to the No. 2 position which moved her from an A to a B for the next move. She was a trooper but I don't think that it is fair for the other kids in the class when that happens. Just wondering if I am being a "studio mom" being upset when I saw this happen and the look on DD's face through the dance.

If she didn't come to the rehearsal but showed up at the recital in costume knowing what to do, she had private time with the instructor after hours . I myself would change studios as she is giving preferential treatment to her special students. I left a coach once because she had a skater where the family had a very deep pocket. She actually abandoned DD during her practice for her Junior test to give this child her special lesson.:furious: She pretty much lost most of her student s due to this and her Special Student got bored and quit.:goodvibes

Quick fly by posting. We are at`the Wilderness Lodge. Crowds were great over the weekend but the flood gates seem to have opened up today.
Getting ready to hit the hot tub.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Coral

Hi Coral. Did you get much rain yesterday and today?

Phew I go offline for a few days and miss a ton! Geez! hopefully nothing too important. We were visiting my parents, sister and Niece and caught a baseball game (Abq Isotopes vs Iowa Cubs) and it was a REALLY REALLY boring game!

What's CDW/LDW??

It is the insurance some credit cards have to cover you from theft, damage, etc. Usually the rental companies charge you extra for this but if your card has the benefit you can decline it. I believe it stands for collision damage waiver and Liability damage waiver.

I want one!

Hey Roger!

Brendan and I are on the Pirate Boat in Aruba!!!!

We are so excited!

Chrissie

Got ya covered Chrissie, glad to have you aboard :thumbsup2

Just to confirm been to the hospital and its NOT DVT, but a ligament strain around the Calf muscle. So thats good news no injections to worry about,

Great news Andrew.:cool1: This is one of those signs of growing older, welcome to the club.

Kristina, your grandmother and family will be in our prayers. I am sure that she has lived a long and full life.

By the way I kept thinking of you today at work and only logged on to the DIS during my breaks and lunch. :confused3 Well it was busy today, sure keep telling myself that and no they are not watching me. :lmao:

Tell Andy congrats on the swim lessons :thumbsup2 Keep reminding him that in the ocean you really don't need to swim just float.

Happy Birthday Rita!!

Are there are a lot of boys that dance up your way? There was only one boy in the kindergarden ballet/tap class, a twin of a girl in the class. He didn't really look like he wanted to be there. Now the instructor's son and a couple other boys 3rd grade and up are going to be in a boys only tap class. After talking to the son, DS wants to take the class. Part of me says great! It will give him something fun to do but part of me doesn't want him to just because kids can be mean enough without something like that for ammo. I think that I have talked him into taking TKD after we get back and start school in the fall.

Tropical Night Attire

I think it would be kinda fun if we all wore our Matching Mickey Postcard Print clothes to dinner on Tropical Night!

No, the instructor did not even know that she was at the recital until she saw nine girls on the stage for the first number since she was in front of the stage on the floor to direct the younger girls. Her assistant told me that she had no idea that she was going to be there until just before the show started when she walked backstage in costume (which she picked up right before the pictures were taken a couple weeks ago.) She did not know the dance at all, which was obvious since she spent the entire time looking over at my DD trying to copy what she was doing. She saw the completed dance for the first time on stage in costume.

Sorry that happened. It is stressful to sell a house especially when it is what you are depending on to move. We were lucky to be able to move first but the house is still for sale, even after a big drop in price. I try not to think about it. If I did dwell on it I would stress out but I know that we would do exactly the same thing to get the kids in a much better school even if we knew that the house would sit there for so long.

We will be wearing our Tiki Mickey outfits from a couple years ago. We still have the Aloha Mickey things before that. :) I will probably pack both sets.

Ok...I did decide I had to make my FE myself......for good or for bad....I wanted something original I could use as something special. I'm posting a couple pics here so if anyone else is interested in how to make one let me know. I would never go so far as to say it's as nice as all the others, but in the end I made it special for this TOAL and if you are feelin' that same urge it took me less than a day to sew together after having the fabric and images and spending little time designing it. The sewing was not a big deal.

I love it! Very piratey and original! Great work!

We worked on our FE tonight, again, keeping in mind I am a numbers lady and not crafty!

We have our "pockets" as my DD3 calls them done! I love them! It is really fun for me to do. DD14, DD10 and DD3 and I did lots of iron ons etc. So, now I just need to figure out how to attach the "pockets" to the fabric...CALLING ALL CRAFTY PEOPLE...

Can I use a hot glue gun to attach fabric to other fabric? I haven't seen my sewing machine in about 5 years, so the hot glue would be preferrable, but I could ask my mom to sew it for me.

That is the only thing I have left to do. Wait, I suppose I need to figure out how to hang it from the fish too. UGH, well, I have 7 weeks left, I will get it done. Thanks in advance for any advice you guys may have for me!

I hot glued my pockets on fabric to fabric. Only thing is I ended up with a dark spot that looks like a stain where the glue was. Also, be very careful when pressing it together....learned that the hard way. :headache:

I agree that if there is an illness or emergency or major conflict time wise then it is not the child's fault. In this case the mom talked to another mom in the class outside of the studio and told her that she was not going to let her child participate in dance because she was not maintaining good grades in school. I understand her decision with that as a parent but IMO if you do that then she doesn't participate any more from that point on. You don't pull her from the program and then have her show up to the recital unprepared if no dance was her punishment. What lesson was learned by the kid? Here she was "punished" but was able to participate in an event that was a big deal to the other members of the class who had worked very hard and attended class as expected to learn the dance and were prepared. If it wasn't a beginner class and had been more uptempo it is possible that someone besides this noshow who could have gotten injured during the performance because she was not where she needed to be. At this age especially, the reward of going to class every week and practicing is the recital. So in esence she got the reward without doing any of the work. Not the lesson I want my kids to learn, which is why I talked about it with both of them about how it affected the class and DD and why I tell them that they make a commitment to the team and will not disappoint the other members or the instructor/coach by not doing their part.

Lisa,

You POV is well taken.. and I must say I agree entirely with your POV. However, for what it's worth... I try to ASSUME every parent is trying to do the best they can as a parent. Obviously, just about everyone can stand for some improvement as a parent - myself included. However... if it were ME and our kids influenced by a situation like yours'... I'd be grumping initially... then MAYBE... (maybe not) ... I'd be thinking... OK... lets' forgive them ... but a part of me would probably hope to not find that girl in my daughters next dance class recital. AND, probably a bigger part of me would not be very forgiving IF anyone got hurt through lack of proper preparation.

So on another note - here's something sad and/or glad depending upon ones perspective. I share this as a thought for consideration in guarding OUR children.

Bicycle%20Accident.jpg

Just today we attended our 1st swim team practice - and I noticed one of the younger girls whom we knew well as wearing an odd swim suit "tight" with curious geometry and patches. So I casually enquired - and the Mom told me her daughter's suit had patches to cover her SKIN GRAFTS to prevent scarring. Further conversation revealed that thier daughter had been RUN OVER by a car! It was then I realized that here it was that thier daughter was probably the one I heard about! Some of the neighbors had been talking about a little girl in our community who had been riding her bicycle with her sister and father - and had gotten a bit ahead of them (Dad trailing)... and a car backed out of the driveway and ... and this happened.

The notion I am suggesting is that we need to LEAD our kids when riding bikes, scooters or anything else. I am guilty of NOT keeping up except when the kids reach an interesection - where they are forbidden to cross without an adult. WELL.... since having heard this story I now lead my kids on rides anywhere. And, now it comes to pass that we KNEW the family who had this tragedy. We've been to the Hollywood Bowl with them - done neighborhood pot luck gatherings and such - but obviously we're not THAT close to them. And oddly enough we had not done much with them in a few months. Now we know why we had not seen much of the parents like we used to. [ Sigh ] .... Thier kids are one grade ahead of Julianna and Kelea respectively... so our kids are close in age but don't quite match up for some kinds of gatherings.

At any rate, I had mentioned there might besome who would think there was somtething positive to be "GLAD" about. And having seen the recovering little one I can say it is wonderful to see her practicing with the swim team. Her recovery implies a lot of healing has resulted in a lot of normal function recovered in spite of the horriffic nature of the accident. And - of course - I only found out superficially today. SO I did not ask how much recovery has really occured - and how much is NOT recovering the way we'd like. Questons like that are not quite appropriate ... yet. OR... possibly ever... depending upon the circumstances. Only time will tell.

19474.jpg

Remember... I was the one who was also hit by a car while I rode my bicycle in a charitable fundraiser for MS ... where it broke my hip and a wrist... plus I lost a few ounces of skin too from the tumble. So - bicycle accidents are something I am uniquely qualified to remark on. Everyone must remember to ALWAYS wear a properly adjusted crash helmet - because in my case the helmet was damaged/destroyed - as it should be in protecting ME from having my head seriously damaged.

At any rate - I share these experiences in the hopes that someone - someday here will AVOID a tragedy because of the increased caution that they exercise while recalling my TURE stories. We're all trying desperately to do the best we can - I really believe that - yet we're all imperfect people (excepting maybe counselors Lil'G or TOM31 who "might" be p-e-r-f-e-c-t :duck: ) so hopefully the best we can do is ENOUGH... eh?! < wink >
