7 year old son, first time

Hello!
This is the first time my son will be going to Disney and my first time in about 10 years. He is 7 years old and has Aspergers, ADHD, and SID. I plan on getting a GAC card to maybe help with some stuff. I was wondering can I rent a stroller for someone his age? He doesnt have any medical problems with walking but it is one of his triggers sometimes and Im thinking it could cause a few meltdowns since usually when he has to walk through the grocery store its "killing" him and hes going to "die" if he takes one more step. @@. I don't need a wheelchair or even a stroller as wheelchair sticker Im just wondering if they have strollers in Magic Kingdom that they allow you to rent for a 7 year old. He weighs about 55 pounds. Im going to take his gameboy along for him to play while he waits in lines. Any other tips will be appreciated!

You can rent double strollers, which can easily handle a large child.

He may even fit in a single stroller; there is usually a person pre-selling stroller rentals out near the turnstiles and they will have a single and double you can look at and even try for size. If you pay for multiple days at once, you get a discount. My son is 4'5" tall and was 100 pounds when we went and he was too big for the double -- to large and too tall. At MGM they have the mesh jogging strollers and they accomodate larger kids so a single will probably work there.

He will fit fine in a Disney Rental stroller. I think you should get the stroller as a wheelchair sticker that way if he choices he can stay in the stroller while you wait in the line if he wishes. It would be nice to have that option if you need it.

My son, 9, has HFA w/severe ADHD and anxiety issues. We ALWAYS rent a double stoller for him and his sister, 6. He really likes it and saves his legs walking the park. If he's in the stroller, I know I won't lose him -- sometimes its very crowded and he can be very impulsive. Plus, if his anxiety is high, it provides as "safe place" as we move around the park. He LOVES Disney and the theme parks have really helped him over the years. We call it "Disney Therapy" I don't think my son sees it as a "baby" stoller b/c we've rented them for so long now. When his cousins (10 & 8) join us, they actually fight over who gets to ride in the stroller. They love it. Have a great trip!!

I have a child with similar issues. The stroller is such a great idea. I rented a WDW double stroller for her (8) and her brother 5.
At time of trip she was 8, 56 inches tall and about 80 pounds. She fit in it fine and it gave her space away from people. The gameboy idea is a great idea. I also took with us: books, small snacks in ziploc bags, favourite stuffed animal and a small kids blanket for each of them.

Thanks so much for the replies. One more question. Can anyone tell me how much a single stroller is to rent for 1 day. We will only be going to Magic Kingdom and a waterpark with him as of right now. He really gets over stimulated and isnt that much of a ride kid to begin with. He much prefers swimming, minigolf to rides. My only other child is my 17 yr old dd so I wont need a double stroller.

If he doesn't really like rides, I'd take him to MGM or EPCOT instead of MK. MK is all about the rides, it's also the most crowded, highest pressure park, in my opinion.

MGM has the Lights, Motors Action show that every kid seems to be obsessed with.

EPCOT is much bigger and spread out, easier to walk in the stroller with him-and believe me, your arms are going to get *tired* pushing a 55 lb kid around all day if you're constantly maneuvering in crowds. Also a more low key experience.

I think the stroller rentals are like 11-15 a day, you should be able to find it if you search the threads.

For one day a single stroller is $10 and a double is $18. Multiple days drop to $8/$16 per day. Note that if he is large for a single you will need a double.

If you go to MGM I highly reccomend the Indiana Jones show (if they still have it) my son LOVED it. But sit towards the back because of the special effects. Also star tours. If he can handle a simulator ride take him on it he will really like it. If he will not go on star tours take him to the area because there is so much star wars stuff to see.

Magic Kingdom does have a lot of rides but there are other things to do as well. Both my kids really seemed to enjoy Epcot which I did not expect because they were 5 and 71/2 at the time but the asked to go there more then any other park.

Definitely get a stroller. My ds is almost 7 and is already up to my chin (o.k, I'm only 5 ft tall, but still). He fits in the Disney strollers. When things get to be too much for your ds, he can just hop in the stroller, his little safety zone.

Wow, I can so relate to the "Im gonna die and this is killing me" statements... amazing what you hear on these boards. We are going next week and have ever plan on getting a stroller.. I will let you know how it goes.. btw, ds is 7 and 67 pounds. Eileen

I've seen some pretty big kids in the MGM single strollers, but that's a good point about the double strollers there.
Another posibility would be to rent a special needs stroller from one of the off-site companies. I think Walker and Care (listed in the disABILITIES FAQs) rent those. There is another company, which I can't find right now, that rents special needs strollers.
