In the past year since moving to the west coast I've had some success at the 7-month window for January (both '22 and '23) and Nov/Dec right after Thanksgiving for studios. My best get has been in January, 6 nights in a studio followed by 1 night in a 1br. Total among the 3 trips has been 15 nights at 7 months.
It's tough going though and gave up and bought a contract that should be closing imminently. Thought about waiting for direct VDH, and may still do that, but my family and I love VGC and don't want to compromise.
I should also add, there isn't much for DVC members at DLR and the concept of DVC is relatively unknown since the only DLR hotel hasn't been actively selling in years. Hoping VDH changes that. As a result, not much in terms of discounts (10% off dining, merch etc), no extras, and nothing on hotels. VGC has no "cash option" like some WDW resorts have.
One strategy I've used is to get as many consecutive nights as you can at VGC and then wait for a seasonal discount through the DLR website on standard GC rooms and change rooms during your trip. It's been fairly painless for me to do this and the time I did add a couple extra hotel nights, they got my room ready by 11am so the move was quick. Also took some pressure off packing on the last day since we did most of the packing for home the morning of the move.
