Obviously all you Ballyhoo'ers are over the post booking ballyhoo and are now bored with coming out to play :sad1: :sad1:

Morning Carolyn....I hope you have a good day today.....how was yesterday ??

Could someone please tell me why the queues to vote are/are expected to be so huge ? When we vote here in a general election we just stroll down to the local school/church hall or whever they local polling station is and vote. I've never heard of there being long queues waiting to vote :confused3 :confused3 Must be a US vote thing

It really depends on where you live, how many polling places are available, how many voting machines are assigned to each polling place and how many people are assigned to go to each location.
For my area it's most of the public schools and I don't expect lines to be more than 20 minutes long, but I could be wrong - I'm hoping they have a lot of machines.

You caught me Dan - although I showed DD this already and now she's upstairs talking to DH about it. Guess I'd better take her to our Museum of Tolerance down here. Thanks Dan!

Although now you've got me wondering what the airfares for a post cruise would be? And if I could mail home some of my suitcases?

I know that Amsterdam is an easy trip from London, my friend has done it several time. Hopefully Izzi can help you out on those logistics.
You can mail suitcases home, just be prepared to take out a mortgage to cover the cost of postage. :rotfl:

That tour could easily be done on your own and you can save the 299-499 Euros. Also, it doesn't include the entrance fees.
Amsterdam is an easy city to walk. The Anne Frank House is not to be missed if you decide to go.

Good Morning!!!!

You can feel the electricity in the air today! The students are wired, even though they are too young to vote. I don't leave school until 5PM today so I'm sure I will be in a long line to vote.

Izzi,

To answer your question, you are assigned a place where you need to vote so you don't have a choice where to go. Usually, there are only a few people ahead of you depending at what time you go. But this election is hotly contested so more people than usual are voting, assuring long lines almost everywhere. Some states will let you vote before today and save your vote. Others, like NY, only let you vote early if you will be away from home today and you filled out a form earlier and sent it in to the headquarters for the area you are supposed to vote. Every state has a range of time the polling places are opened. In NY, it is from 6AM to 9 PM.

So, we are certainly in for a longgggg day today. But in the past, we didn't find out who the president was going to be for months. Let's hope, whoever it is, that won't happen again.

I never have to wait to vote. In fact most times, I've been the only one there. Maybe a couple other people sometimes.

Yesterday went good. It's going to be a pretty slow week though as the planners reschedule all the work.

Well you know that odd as all thats being reported on the BBC news is LOOOOOOOOOONG queues

http://news.bbc.co.uk/

I just got back from voting. I arrived at the firehouse at 10:00 so it was just over an hour and 10 minute wait (I talked to a few neighbors on the way out). Most of eveyrone in line--about 90%--were retired folks. I felt really bad that so many older people had to stand and wait that long. I let a few people just arriving in walkers skip ahead of me when I was near the entrance so they wouldn't have to wait too long. I couldn't believe they didnt' have a handicapped line. Two of them were on oxygen and I can't see having them wait out in the cold over an hour standing. Luckily I didn't get too bombarded with election materials outside.

I came home to a big box of magnetic paper I ordered so I can get started on some more magnets for our stateroom door next month. I found a place online to get 50 sheets for $55 plus $12 S&H. Much better than the 4 sheets for $15 I paid at Staples!

Don't worry, that's all I've been hearing on the Philadelphia tv stations as well. I've been watching the live shows that are broadcast from New York and they keep talking how long they are as well.

I'll go in a little bit and report back to you how bad it was in my area.

I think the polls in Delaware are open 7am - 9pm.

I was wondering when it came to making my door magnets whether or not to try magnetic tape this time. In the past I've always used magnetic paper but it's just so expensive so I thought about using the magnetic tape. Have you ever tried using the magnetic tape ? If so what did you think ?

As Christmas and Channukah coincide this year does anyone fancy doing a Ballyhooers holiday card exchange ???

A reminder

You PM me your full name and postal address, as do all the other people who want to participate. I then compile a list with all that information and send it out to all the people on the list. You then send a christmas/channukah/holiday card to all the people on the list and you should get one back from all the people on the list.

It's a nice way to bring us all closer together and celebrate the holidays and it also great fun to see the cards coming through the door as they won't all be coming from the same country. :grouphug:  :grouphug:  :grouphug:  :grouphug:

I've been asked by a couple of Ballyhooers to give an exact cutoff date as they wish to order really, really extra special cards to send to us ;) ;) So if you wish to be sociable and holidaylicious please can you PM me your postal details by November 13th 2008 :grouphug:

Some Ballyhooers have told me what holiday they celebrate if I was going to list that information. I don’t think I’m going to for the following reasons.

1. We are all friends and the cards are being sent in the spirit of friendship

2. I am Jewish and I only buy and send Channukah cards to all my friends regardless of their religious belief. At the same time I don’t expect my non Jewish friends to send me anything other than the same Christmas cards they are sending to all their other friends as it’s the friendship and joy we are sharing which is important message here not what picture is on the front of the card.
bump

Bloody marvellous...thanks Barb :flower3:

You are most welcome. It's funny that I just read that thread this morning and then you mentioned it here.
So now you will need the magnetic tape for our door signs and for your HD MM head paint chips.

Well here in NYC the lines are wrapping around the blocks . . . my youngest daughter actually chose to get up early so that she could do it with me (NYC public schools are closed today because that's where we vote, but my girls are at a private school so had to be there by 8) . . . we got there at 6:30 and barely made it out at 7:45 for her to go on to school. Very exciting, though! At my girls' school today they were holding a vote with real voting machines, having to check in with a "polling person," etc., to give them the real experience.

Julie what do you mean by voting machine :confused3 :confused3 Don't you just put a X in the square of the one you want to vote for and then put the ballot paper into a locked box ??

Where is Carolyn when you need her google assistance?
We also use voting machines. You go in the machine (which is about 7 feet tall), draw the curtain around you and press down on the levers to register your votes. Once you are done you push a button at the bottom and that makes sure your votes are registered and clears the levers so the machine is ready for the next voter. At the end of the night there is a register that is taken out of the back of the machine and turned into the elections office so all votes from each machine can be counted.

Before you can get into the machine to vote one of the election workers pulls out a piece of paper with your info on it and then verifies that it matches the info on your license. That takes some time, so another reason for the long lines of people.

I worked a school board election one year so I got to see the process from start to finish.

Every state has their own types of machines or systems for voting - it's not universal across the 50 states.

No, here in NYC at least, there are big machines you walk into behind a curtain once you have signed in, then you pull a big lever to one side to begin voting, then pull levers to make a check next to the names of those you choose to vote for, and at the end, pull the big lever back over to record your vote. They let Meredith go in with me and do the actual pulling of levers for me, which she loved. Let me see if I can find some online photos of what it is like, at least here.
