Can someone recommend a good math book for a parent? Any teachers out there that can help?

We are working on finding the median tonight. I feel real dumb but I cannot help her with her math. What reference guide should I get?

Teachers, If I was to call you or send in a note, would that be appreciated? I just want to be able to help her. I would even be willing to get one of the text books from the school.

Thanks

The median is the number that falls in the middle. Out of these numbers: 18, 22, 19, 22, 25, 22, 18, 17, and 20, 20 is the median.

25
22
22

20

18

17

Some other things are mean (which is the average) and mode, which is the most commonly occuring number, here it's 22. Hope that helps for tonight!

Also if there is an even number in the number set. You take the middle two numbers and divide by two (basically their average) and that is the median. :D

My DD in 5th grade is having a test on this tomorrow! I am proud to say that I can figure out the median (along with the range and mode...........if you haven't seen that yet, you soon will! ) Of course, I guess I should mention that she is the youngest of 3 and I have been through this 2 other times.............we won't discuss the fiasco what my oldest tried to explain this to me!! :earseek: Easiest thing to do is line up the numbers in order and figure out which one falls in the middle!

Have you seen the stem and leaf plots yet!!??

UGH, I think that 6th grade math is a bit out of my mental capabilities and math WAS my best subject TWENTY YEARS AGO

::yes:: Last year DS was in 6th grade. :crazy2:

What ever happened to the "new math" from the '80s? Is this the even newer math of the 2000s? :confused3

I'm afraid of the same thing. LOL! I never had Saxon math. I'm buying the teacher's edition of the book he uses so I can figure out how they get the answer. ;) Range, median, and mode I have no problem with if I can keep them straight. I've been taking three Algebra classes the past couple years, so it's ringing a bell.

As long as you can do the basic stuff...Like landmark, I'm in stats right now (this is actually my 4th stats class, so we're fairly advanced, although most of it will soon be on the computer-grad school prof doesn't believe in doing the hard stuff by hand since there's no real point) and I have lost the ability to do basic math....I used to be a whiz, but DBF was teasing me last night that I have a hard time with addition now....It's sad really. ;) I was administering an IQ test Sunday night and on one of the math problems, the guy said "is ___ right?" I just kinda laughed...I couldn't tell him regardless, but I was like, you're asking the wrong chick, buddy. I have NO idea. (Something with percents or....something. I don't know)

Isn't Excel wonderful ;)

Usually when I get stuck I just google the question and something comes up to help. Median is easy stuff, wait till they hit algebra.

We don't use excel! It won't do most of the formulas we need, so in undergrad I learned SAS, and now I'm learning SPSS, which is SO much easier than SAS

she was also doing the stem and leaf plots last night. I will use the sites you gave me here. Sometimes I feel so stupid. I have considered going to take some math classes - again. So hard to keep up with them.

Sometimes I google but I think I ask the wrong questions or put in the wrong wording.
