Gee, why not lock them in a closet until they turn eighteen?

I'd suggest another book to read called Parenting with Love and Logic:Teaching Children Responsibility. Basically the book is based on the premise that every choice has a consequence. Some are good, some are bad and teaching them to live with the consequence of the choice they chose. Kids talk back or disrespect because they thrive on parents giving the kids emotion and kids thrive on emotion. It might be worth looking into. I know my kids school has had lectures from the authors and uses it daily as do we at home and we've seen our kids really turn around in their problem areas.

Hope you get it figured out!

Thanks for the info. on the books! I'll also be checking those out asap! We just bought Dr. Phil's Family First audio tape last week! Our just turned 3yo dd is a handful and a half.

That sounds great! I hope you see some improvement soon :)

I think the "frown face / smiley face" calendar is a GREAT idea, although I don't know about the "10 cents for every smiley face" thing. I'd want him to learn to be respectful because it's the right thing to do, not because he's getting paid for it. I'd probably make a bigger thing about the smiley face each day than the amount of extra money each week.

Just a thought ...

Hey sounds great! Teaching respect is key and figuring out how you can do it effectively with your child is what counts.
:D

At my 3yo dd's speech appointments, the teacher started using smiley faces. If she gets 3 sad faces, she doesn't get a treat that day. Kendall does NOT like to get the sad faces! So, when the teacher isn't looking, she'll turn it over! ;)

They have also posted "treatment room rules", and she is actually following them better! I think the structure is helping her quite a bit, but we still need alot of help!
