6 Adults, 1 horrible snorer: What are our options?

If you are determined to stay on property I think I'd get multiple rooms at a value.

I agree with three rooms at a value. Each couple gets their own room OR if your DH needs to be by himself, one set of kids could sleep in the room with you while he takes the third room by himself.

We had a similar situation a few years ago. We ended up at Old Key West with a two bedroom suite.

Snorer took the pull out couch in the living room, and everyone else split up between the two bedrooms (Master room had a king, and the second room had two queen beds). Worked perfectly, and since it had been recently renovated, we had the much nicer pull-outs that are solid foam (no feeling a bar through the mattress).

Apparently I, on occasion (the occasion being when it is dark out and I'm in bed) make the sound of an unmuffled chain saw with a backfire. But we don't have to go any such elaborate lengths to have everyone sleep peacefully.

My significant has a solution which works without fail -- a spare sneaker thrown at me makes the problem stop instantly.

It seems like the husband might consider compromising. Get a CPAP, which would make the accommodations easier and cheaper, and he'd probably feel better too. Or rent a car and a house with four bedrooms.

CPAPS are smaller and more modern than they used to be. My husband's does variable air pressure and has a computer chip that records the number of apneas he has. He still remembers his first morning after using a CPAP at age 29. He hadn't felt that awake and good in a long time.

If you sleep on an air mattress, you will get less comfortable sleep. If he sleeps with a CPAP, even if it just for the vacation, he will get more comfortable sleep. That's why it seems he should compromise and not you.
I totally agree with this, my hubby and I both have a CPAP and cannot sleep without it.. we are well rested and ready to go so I say tell him to get one and use it even if its once and a while to get used to it he will be happier and so will everyone eles.. If its the mask one switch to the nose one.. try different ones.

I agree with others that 2-3 rooms is likely the best way to go. I would guess you could do 3 rooms at a value or 2 rooms at a moderate for the same price as the 2 bedroom DVC.

I would do 3 rooms at the resort of your choice, or go with Bonnet Creek. Bonnet Creek is right next door to CBR, so you are within the Disney bubble, but at a non Disney resort.

Tell him if he refuses to use a CPAP his choices are spending a lot of money on multiple Disney rooms, or dealing with a rental car. The rest of you should not have to suffer because of his choices.

DH snores so badly he and I sleep in separate rooms now at home. On vacation I don't want to be so tired I can't function so we need space in case one of us needs to head to the couch.

We just got back from Wyndham Bonnet Creek. We had a 2 bedroom for our trip for 4 - kids in one room, DH with me until he started snoring and I kicked him to the couch or I went to the couch to get away from the noise. WBC has a shuttle to the parks if you absolutely don't want a rental car.

If I refuse to wear my CPAP, here is the arrangement I am sure my DW would make. 1 Cabin and 1 campsite at FW, I am sure you all can figure out who would be at the campsite:rotfl2:

ROTFL!!!! hope you get this figured out OP!

I've done the villas with a friend who's a major-league snorer. I gotta tell ya, if you put your husband in the living room of a two-bedroom villa, that just means that all of you will hear him loud and clear through the bedroom doors.

If you really all want to be in the same villa, you'd be better off giving him the king bed in the master bedroom. Whoever's sleeping in the living room will likely hear him, but the people in the second bedroom will be much better off.

I'd also recommend three rooms at a value, if he's not willing to go off property. Don't get connecting rooms, you'll hear him right through the connecting doors.

Wyndham Bonnet Creek would be a good choice for your group. You could get a 4 bedroom condo with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone. It's so much cheaper than onsite also. I would rent a car plus you could use the shuttle service they have if you want to break up your group. No way would I try to fit everyone in a couple of rooms onsite or even a 2 bedroom DVC rental - just the bodies alone would be a tight fit & especially with a snorer.

I feel your pain. My DH had an at-home test that said he was waking up A LOT (like 30+ per hour). He's had to cancel 2 in-clinic sleepovers but he has one set up for December. Meanwhile, he keeps me awake every night he is home. I am praying that they give him a CPAP machine. Can I ask what you do at home?

He sleeps in one bedroom and I'm in another. We did the at home test that came back with something like 56 an hour results, really severe. The ENT was certain the growth (benign thankfully, post biopsy) on the uvula was going to work wonders. NOT. So he'd have to do another sleep study and has an absolute phobia about trying to sleep with something latched on to the front of his face.

As much as I love staying on property, if I were in the situation you're in, and I had the make up of family like you do, and if I were budget conscious, I'd stay off property, too. I really think your only option for on-property is going to be a two-bedroom villa--you in the king bed, your kids and their SOs in the second bed, and your husband on the pull out couch.

Or three value rooms.

Or two value rooms and a set of earplugs for you.

If only earplugs worked! truly, I've tried drilling them down to my brain, can't hear anyone talking to me (and shout at them) but dangit if the frequency of that snore just cuts right through. :worried:

Clearly, I need to do some more number crunching on three values instead of a suite. Is there a site that shows the general discounts rooms get (and when they're announced) in the past few years? Looking at rack rate is just pointless to try and compare with the DVC rental option.

Have you looked in to Saratoga Springs or Boardwalk area? Both of those have lower price points per stay than Bay Lake or AK. Plus, at Boardwalk (or Beach/Yacht Club) you could walk to Epcot through the International Gateway.

You know, I thought that would be the case, but when I checked, AK 2 bdr (standard) came in under both of them, even Saratoga! Weird.

The earlier you go in December the cheaper it will be. I just looked at the all stars at the beginning of December and the rooms were 98 dollars a night. You can get 3-4 value rooms and still come up with the same price as a deluxe per night. At least you would get some sleep! I also have heard people talk about renting dvc points. I never did that but will be looking into that as a possible option for our next trip once I learn more about it.

Sadly, the middle of the month is the earliest we can get there with two kids doing college finals at the start of Dec.

We've never tried renting points either, but once I realized how tricky the sleeping arrangements were going to be, it seemed like a good thing to check out.

The scariest part though is making the leap so early (11 months is availability comes up) only to realize we might have saved a ton with discounts that aren't announced until a few months before the trip.

Apparently I, on occasion (the occasion being when it is dark out and I'm in bed) make the sound of an unmuffled chain saw with a backfire. But we don't have to go any such elaborate lengths to have everyone sleep peacefully.

Tried it. I'd have a heck of a pitching arm if I continued, but even full body slams result in, at most, a 60 second reprieve. :rotfl:

Will definitely check this out. We are separate room sleepers, too and I am as adamant about getting a solid night's sleep as I am about getting clean air to breathe. It works for us at home and we only get to Disney every other year, so this is that one week of really trying circumstances that needs a lot of planning.

THIS is what I'm afraid of, especially after spending so much to discover the walls aren't thick enough to make a difference. If mama doesn't get her sleep, nobody's getting a happy vacation.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!

has an absolute phobia about trying to sleep with something latched on to the front of his face.

I totally understand that phobia. I know I snore a little bit, and I get scared that it will get worse and that I'll develop apnea and have to deal with something on my face. Shudder.

But he does get that this is likely going to shorten his life, yes? Apnea causes all sorts of health problems.

Saw your signature pictures. Your kids are carbon copies of the two you! How cool!

Yes, he's read and I've quoted all sorts of dire long term health effects. Part of the issue is that a few years ago he lost a lot of weight and was on a strict regimen of protein and multiple workouts a day. He completely stopped snoring (and even prior to the weight loss wasn't keeping me awake ALL night.

So when that slowed down, and then eventually stopped, the weight came back on and the snoring got so.much.worse. Until he can find the motivation to get back in the workout saddle (work and volunteer stuff takes up a lot of the workout time he had in the past) I don't see anything short of a CPAP as a viable solution. And that, of course, gets us back to the phobia. Sigh.

:goodvibes I run in to people all the time who say, "You have to be Samantha's mom." and she gets, "You have to be Tori's daughter." There's just no denying it. No one can tell us apart on the phone either. And my DH, who has to live with the two of us (DS is in Texas at school), gets really agitated when he gets the same eye rolls, sarcastic comments, and laughs in stereo.

If you don't mind the idea of multiple rooms... with the possibility of them not being adjoining/connected... then I would definitely look into the Values.

Free Dinning:
This year... Free Dinning was released 5/7 (5/2 for Disney Visa holders) with December arrival dates of 12/12-12/23. For value resorts... your paying 'rack rate' on your room... and each guest receives the QSDP at no additional cost. Looking at 2015 rates (http://www.mousesavers.com/2015-all-star-music-room-rates-season-dates/)... Starting 12/11 the All Stars run $123/$156 to $199 the 18th and onward. Those include tax... and will give you an idea on what to expect if Free Dinning happens to be offered during your dates... don't forget to factor in tickets (package requires) and potential extra adult charges if the kids are still going to share.

Room Discount:
On 7/23 a 15% room discount was offered for the value resorts (15%-30% off property wide for 11/25 - 12/23.) It's likely a similar discount will be offered for next. Orbitz is a great option to save even more... Disney discounts are already reflected (when available) in Orbitz pricing... and while the tend to be slightly higher (Orbitz fees,) you're able to apply a promo code (10%-20% off) to save even more. 15% from Disney... plus 15% from Orbitz promo codes... will likely yeild an almost 25% discount.

Don't hesitate to combine either... If you don't need 2 QS a day... Book 2 rooms (2 in each) under Free Dinning... and another room (or two) as room only through Orbitz. You can allocate the QS credits as you see fit. I will say that FD is the better 'value' but ONLY if you were good to take full advantage of the Dinning Plan (which could be upgraded to the Regular Plan.

Thanks for the info!

I've run the numbers for the four of us for Free Dining before and could never decide if it was enough of a bargain. Plus, we've always enjoyed the ability to not have to pay in full until check out with a room only reservation, and save a bit with the Mouse Savers / UT discounted park tickets. We very rarely eat table service, and I think the last time I tried to see if it was a good deal, I don't recall having a less expensive QS option.

Any good calculators out there to breakdown the per person costs of the "Free" dining compared to room only discount?

Sticking with room only numbers for the moment...

Running a check on Dec. 16-23 2015, it's showing (for 2 adults) a rack rate of $147.29 at All Star Movies, adding them to the cart to get tax and fees included = $1165.03, no tickets.

($3495.09 for 7 nights with three rooms)

Assuming 15% discount room only = $2971.64

Possibly applying a 10% discount through Orbitz = $2674.48

Staying at the cheapest DVC 2br through the rental store (AK Value View) = $2982.00

Pros for three rooms at a Value:
Room only means only deposit required before trip, payable at check out.
Three bathrooms
Possible savings once discounts are released, but nothing certain.

Pros for 2br. DVC at AK:
Deluxe resort surroundings and DD has always wanted to stay at AK
One stop shop for all of us when we're taking off in the mornings or hanging out in the evenings
Queen and king beds versus doubles
Kitchen option (although using ME to get there, would need to factor in paying for a grocery delivery, but should still be miles cheaper for on the go breakfasts and snacks)

For the $11 difference between a 15% room only at Value versus AK with kitchen, I'd go with AK.

But over $300 cheaper for Values, it gets a little harder to say.

Add to that -- if availability comes up for us at the 11 month check, we have to decide right then, and start paying on the room total immediately if we opt for DVC.

I think I'm chasing my tail here.

The way that I view the "free dining" discount is: "Can I feed my family for the room only discout of $X whatever "X" is. So, you're looking at a rack rate of $147 and a room-only discount is 15%, that's about $39 per night with the extra 10% (which may or may not be offered thru Orbitz when you book) and tax savings on the discounts. Can you feed 2 adults 4 QS meals and 2 snacks for $39 total at WDW? Nope. In that case, free dining is better.

As for a DVC 2-BR, be aware that the Value villas are (1) 945 square feet vs/s 1075 square feet in the regular sized villas and (2) in VERY high demand because of the price. If you are serious about booking a Value villa you will have to get everything arranged well in advance of the 11-month booking window so your DVC owner can access the inventory right at the first day (or even find someone who is willing to "walk" the reservation for you. For instance, I am an owner at AKV and I can look at availability and RIGHT now for exactly 11 months out (starting 10/5/2015) 10/5 and 10/8 are already both unavailable in a Value 2BR.

I would recommend that you have a back-up. Either a Standard View in Jambo House (guaranteed pool or obstructed savannah view) or select another resort. Old Key West has the biggest 2-bedroom at a whopping 1395 square feet and may be worth the extra $$ to put some more distance between you and your DH.

I just wanted to say that you are very generous parents to allow the extra people in your party.

Sometimes Swan and Dolphin have some great rates. Could you qualify for a teacher, nurse, or military discount? I heard those are pretty sweet. You would have to find your own transportation to/from the airport as they do not offer Magical Express, but you still get extra magic hours.
