It may be related to the lockers. The Large size is 15x25x19, the largest available inside the park gates. So maybe that cooler size is the largest box that will fit in and allow the doors close.

Was plannin to bring a 'hard-side' cooler to the 'picnic area',,,,not knowin which way is which,kinda makes it tough to plan.

We got an Igloo Maxcold backpack cooler, on advice from the boards, and it's brilliant!

We have a similar backpack cooler and took it with us to WDW last time and it was great. We are a family of 6 and we probably brought 9 sodas, two cans of Pringles, and a huge ziplock bag full of M&Ms and we still had tons of room. I really thought the backpack distributed the weight of the cooler evenly over my back and it wasn't too burdensome.
