Another good idea for our trip next week -

Should I visit the bank and ask for 50 new pennies?

Is purchasing an album a good idea to put the coins in, since only one side will show?

What are the chances that all 50 machines work? I would hate to start and not get all 50.

If I use old pennies, how do I clean them?

Thank You!!

You actually want pre 1982 pennies if possible, because they have more copper in them. Post 1982 pennies will sometime separate when being pressed (you will see the silver zinc show through)

I have heard the best thing to clean older pennies with is a vinegar solution. Basically, let them soak overnight.

Ketchup works to clean them, too (because of the vinegar). My kids always have fun with the ketchup, though. Let it soak overnight.

I would get an album - those pennies get banged up and lost fast when they are loose!

One more great idea if you haven't already heard it. Buy a few mini M&M tube and stack 2 quarters and a penny, 2 quarters & a penny... it makes it so easy to find what you need.

What kind of album are you talking about??

I thought the pressed pennies were like an oval shape, is that right?

Just confused on the subject LOL!!

On my last trip to DL in August I collected all 51. There is a special 50th logo penny book for sale at most of the merchandise shops. It was really fun collecting them all. There are actually 17 machines with 3 designs (years) per machine. At the start of my trip one machine at the World of Disney store in DTD was out of order and I worried I would be 3 short but it was up and running by my last day. And I second the motion of pre-1982 pennies. My book is a zinc-free zone!!

This sounds like a great idea :) But I'm from Australia and access to pennies isn't going to be easy.... Anybody got any ideas on how I might go about getting a whole stack of them... Also does anyone know if WDW has the same thing and if they are the same design? If they have different designs I'll have to find pennies for there too...

Try asking a cashier at DL when you are buying something for a roll of pennies as part of your change. I did this the other day at a fast food place with nickels, and they gave me a whole roll, no problem. If they won't/can't give you a roll, I bet they would give you at least 10 or so. You might want to get quarters, too. Every pressed penny costs 2 quarters.

Can someone clear up something for me? When you put your penny into the machine, does your actual penny get pressed? I always thought that the pressed pennies were made out of something else and not the actual penny that you put into the machine.

It is the actual penny that gets pressed and the way the machines are set up it allows you to watch your penny roll down the shoot and get dropped into the presser, So you actually watch it getting squished. Great fun, I am a pressed penny efficianado now after trying for about 4 trips now to get 2 complete sets of the 50 year pennies. It's not easy, let me tell you. Jammed machines and out of order signs are your enemy. And it always seems to be the same machines every trip. Think I finally got them all last time, though I haven't actually sat down and taken stock yet. I think victory is at last within my grasp. :)

I love the mini M&M tube idea!

Anyhow, if you aren't able to collect all of them on a trip, I'm sure some local DL'ers wouldn't mind swinging by and helping finish the collection if need be. Asking to get 50 pressed pennies would be bad though :thumbsup2

Does anyone have list where al these machines can be found? I would like to collect them when I go down but don't want to miss a machine. Thank you.

They do not have the same designs at WDW but believe me there are enough machines to keep a person occupied.

Are these machines (or emblems within the machines, I guess) different than the usual ones that are there? I guess I'm trying to ask, are these special ones for the 50th? I didn't realize that the penny machines were different, too!

I was able to collect all the pennies last September, but I did it over a 4-day stay. On some days, the machines were broken (and BF actually broke one of them himself! :rolleyes1 ). However, they were able to get most of the machines fixed within a day, and sometimes even a few hours, so by the end of the stay, we got them all.

We purchased 1 or 2 of the pressed penny books they sell there to store them.

And ditto the vinegar idea for cleaning pennies. Personally, what I do is start early. A few months before my trips, I start saving all the shiny pennies I get for change. I used to work at a bank, and while I'm sure not all banks are the same, I think it would be very difficult to get a roll of brand new pennies. When I'm short on finding shiny pennies, I soak the nicest ones I can find in vinegar mixed with some water overnight. I've heard Coke works well too.

I found a website with the list, and I carried it around with me and checked them off when I got the pennies.

I just returned and I have some bad news. At least one of the machines had one of the dies removed. Even if all of the machines are in order you'd still be one short. I doubt they'll replace one die.

Got my pennies, Got my reservations. Got my rolls of quarters for plugging the machines, Got my kids. Going to the Mouse this Saturday ... but

Which stores in DL sold the pressed penny albums ?

I'm trying to remember where I got our pressed penny album. I'm pretty sure it was that shop on Main Street....they have a lot of pressed penny machines in there....I can't remember what it's called! I will have to look it up in Birnbaum's a get back to you with a name. But it wasn't hard to find.

We didn't work on getting every pressed penny, or even all the 50th pennies. We just got pennies we liked when we ran into them. One side of the album has dd's pennies, and the other side has ds'. And, of course, there are a couple in there that I made myself, because I couldn't live without them! (Who could live without a pressed penny of the Little Green Man from Toy Story? He's my fav!)
