i just saw a bid on ebay disney auction for over 5k to go to wdw for three days. just 2 more wdw trips like that and they could have bought dvc.

Five grand for 3 days, wow ! That would cover more than a third of my contract.

Another example of the value of DVC : people most often compare staying at a DVC resort against staying at moderates or deulxes in fiduring out their "payback" period. Well, I bought into DVC so I could stay at DVC resorts ! I want the size, the convenience, and still have the "Disney experience."

Last night, I was just playing with the numbers and wanted to see what my 250 points were worth vs. staying at the same size DVC accommodations for the same lenght of time. My rough estimates were about $5k ~ $6k per year after room taxes, based on present room rates for OKW. The reults were similar for other DVC resort rooms too.

I addition, since DVC resales have increased in value recently and will probably continue to do so as DVD raises its per-point price the odds are that one could sell one's contract for at or more than what you paid for it, for many years to come.
In effect, I'm getting $5k worth of Disney lodging every year for about $800 in dues.

One last note - if you invested the $14K that my contract cost @ 12% per year, but took out $5k per year to pay for the same lodging the contract would provide, your 14K would only last about 4 years, and only 3.2 years at a more reasonable 6% rate of return. 38 years for free ... WooHoo !

Scott,

I like the way you count!

I've put several spreadsheets together over the years to justify and reconcile my investment to non-believers and have always felt that my "payback period" was less than five years.

Thanks for adding some measure of sanity to my calculations and claims. Or, at least, for showing me I'm not the only crazy person out here who thinks DVC is the best vacation value in history........at least now I know there are two of us!

JohnG, make that three!!

We'll never sell our DVC membership, even if we have to rent out our points some years. It's one of the best vacations we have ever taken!

And, that's really stupid of someone to purchase 5 days for $5K. $1K a day for a trip for accomodations? That's ludicrous!! I can see if it included park passes, a private tour, maybe some meals, etc.

Sometimes people with lots of money to waste have very little brains. It makes you wonder how they got it in the first place! LOL

you get picked up at the airport. You get special seatings at certain events. You get a special tour of the parks. Special gifts.

So there is a little bit more to it than just lodging. Now, for seasoned disney veterans like us, we don't need to be toured around. But if you were planning your first trip there.... and you had the money lying around.... I think it would be a pretty nice trip.

All that said....5K is a huge "hunk of change" even for all that.....

The value of DVC is definately there. We bought back in 1992 for $12,500 (230pts) and probably got our initial investment out of it in two or three years with using it, renting it and the park tickets. This year we used our points to take the seven day Disney cruise in November which we priced at just under $6,000. The value is definately there and I know if I wanted to sell, I would get my intial investment plus a profit with the market now.

I too think in terms of "how long would it take to even up?"

Consider this - I'm a part-time cm so I get a pretty substantial discount (50%) at all of the resorts upon availability. We take advantage of this at least 2 or 3 times a year. Even with my discount, the DVC is a better deal. A good many of the cms at my store decided to buy DVC last year and my DH just wasn't biting. Even though he's as crazy (if not more) than I am about Disney!!!!

I finally did the spread sheet. With my cm discount (which isn't that big on DVC but it's still a discount), my DH says,"We can't afford NOT to buy!" I immediately went into a state of shock, but didn't ask any questions - just called Rose, our DVC guide, and BOUGHT! This is crazy because we've already borrowed some of next year's points! We've got three trips planned for 2001 and we've already been there in January! It's great. On my things-to-do is "Wait for BCV sales - and then add on!"

Cheers,
Bwalker ;)
