5 year old only wants to go to resort pool!

One of the reasons that I wonder why parents bring their infants and very young children to the parks. To them an afternoon at the local city park or pool has about the same impact. They probably won't remember they were at Disney at all if they are under 6.

my middle grandson was a water rat. we were at a restaurant where the dish washing area was near bathrooms. he was around 5 at the time and headed to bathroom with older brothers but as he got to doorway to dish area he turned into dish area. by the time his parents got there he was ready to help the worker there. was a standing joke with staff for a few years. and yes he was one I mentioned earlier as the one who would have made rest of evening rough if forced to leave pool
Love that story!

DS remembers some of the trip he took at 5. (We went again when he was 7, and they do get mixed together a little.)

But we also went for a day trip when he was 18 months. (We were already nearby visiting his great-grandparents.) I went mostly for me, but he does enjoy the photos.

the very littles are easier than the 5/6 year olds. they go where ever you want. no fights over going to the pool

I don't understand the whole "they won't remember" argument. Brains are weird and even if you go as a teenager, chances are you won't remember much if you only go once. My first trip was when I was 20 and I barely remember going at that time, only bits and pieces but I also have a very distinct memory from when I was 2. If you live your life only doing things that you are sure to remember, you wouldn't do the majority of things that you do. You do things to enjoy the experience at the time.

Agreed

Also filming things sometimes will help piece together memories. I wouldn’t remember as much of my childhood trips if it weren’t for photos and videos

Who cares if they remember? My 2 yo absolutely loves going to Disney and it is so awesome to see it through his eyes. He talks about riding figment and barnstormer literally every single day. We watch ride videos because he likes it so much. He enjoys it right now in the moment. It doesn’t matter to me if he remembers it years from now

This is a great thread.

Mine are 16 and almost 14. They still like to know what the pool will look like. They now prefer Universal, but my youngest really enjoyed the Portofino Bay pool and ordering lemon freezes (slushies) and can't wait to go back. When they were little they loved taking mid-day Disney breaks for a swim. It does not matter where in the world we go, a great pool is always a hit.

Agreed! I remember. The kids would go where we go. It's nice to be off work and be fully present with them on vacation. (Sure, we can do this at home too, but being in a different location just makes it special). I love looking through all of our scrapbooks from trips now that my oldest is driving.

My ds loves looking back through pictures and videos to remember our trips. We live an hour away so we go often. I’m trying to soak it all up while I can!

I wonder about infants, only because of the chance of catching something they are unprotected from at a young age, from an international crowd. Oh, and also dealing with the middle of the night stuff, while exhausted from going around the parks all day!

But my youngest daughter remembers a few things from her first trip at age 2 1/2, and a lot more from the trip when she was 5. She's in her twenties now, BTW.

Would you try to go back to parks for dinner and fireworks after 4ish pool hours? That was my big hope for this 2 night trip, since his little brother (2 yo) is staying home for a special weekend with DH.

Maybe I won't have to worry about it since we are going mid January!!
I think that’s really specific to your child… I wouldn’t, but then, I know my toddler would be in burned-out-zombie-monster-mode by then. Your little one might not be. I think the easiest test is to do something similar at home. Can you take him out for dinner and dessert if he’s had a good rest midday? If so that’s probably a good sign.

My now 8yo and 11yo daughters both remember their first trip in 2016 where they were 2 (about to turn 3) and 5 years old. They still talk about their first trip and Many after.

My son, still asks to go see Mickey and the castle and he is still very much a toddler. Maybe when he gets older he won't remember the trips we took when he was younger, but I will :-)

DS is 5.5 and I really want to take him and DS2 before he stops believing in magic.

We went last September to Poly and I couldn’t get him to jump out of the pool in the afternoons without LOTS of negotiations. Then I’d get him to Epcot and he’d be bored and ask to go back to the pool.

Does this pool obsession ever wear off at a certain age? How do you all deal with the “pool is cooler than the parks” conundrum? It was so easy when he was younger and just did whatever us grownups wanted to do lol
One year we did a trip without "the parks." We stayed at Saratoga Springs and enjoyed the pools, walking, bike riding, and eating at all the resort restaurants. The kids LOVED it!

Maybe the message from this is that for many under 7 the parks really arent all that fun and pools are cooler. Take under 7s to a resort pool holiday Instead. Most adults would prefer that holiday as well.

waiting in lines for 30 plus minutes for a 2 minute ride gets boring really quickly.
